This Week in Yuri – November 29, 2008

November 29th, 2008

This week is a veritable cornucopia of Yuri news!

Yuri Live-Action

There’s little more than a promotional image and a bundle of hope, but AIC has announced that a live-action Bugglegum Crisis is not entirely fantasy. Will we finally get the totally dyke-y Priss we want and deserve? Probably not. lol But we can hope, can’t we?

Fans of Yuricest will want to keep an eye out for Brulee, a movie that stars twin sisters, playing twin sisters that are separated and, upon reunion, fall in love with one another. Expect dry, unromantic Japanese kiss scenes. :-)

Yuri Anime

With the US release of the second season of Maria Watches Over Us just around the corner, and the fourth season of Maria-sama ga Miteru coming this January, we’re all aquiver for Marimite news around here. And boy do we have it! To celebrate the fourth season, a New Year’s Eve event has been announced in Japan. Not only will it feature sneak peeks at the fourth season – it will also feature a 3-dimensional “story so far.” LOL How’s that for an exciting use of CG, huh? Long lingering shots of the 3-D Rose Mansion, the table in the council room, Catholic schoolgirls standing around talking…. (I’m guessing that it’s based on designs created for the Bara no Yakata in Second Life and expanded from there.) I’m sure it will be cool, if a little weird.

And exciting news for the three or so of you who enjoyed it, Project ICE is being made into a movie for the theaters. Two streaming trailers are available online now.

Snatches of Yuri

It’s almost December, and therefore the publishers of Yuri Hime, Ichijinsha, are gearing up for their winter releases. The 18th of the month will see the next Yuri Hime S magazine, and several collections from same.

Keep your eyes open for links to order the first collected volumes of Flower Flower, Honey Crush and Cassiopeia Dolce. Also Otome Kikan Gretel which will be the only one I’m planning on getting for myself.

Also coming out this month (pun intended, yes) is the second and final volume of Strawberry Shake Sweet. And a second volume of the light novel Wild Bouquet, this one subtitled “The Flower Whose Name Means Desire.” Sounds spicy, but I’m not holding my breath. (Review of the first volume of Wild Bouquet to come soon, btw.)

Yuri Games

No specifically Yuri, but the game Fable II for the Xbox is being given same-sex options on partnering, with dialogue that is supposed to be more representative of those relationships. Since one of the creators is gay, the dialogue will at least be more representative of a gay male relationship. The only lesbian option mentioned in the article I read was a cross-dressing pregnant lesbian, which didn’t really make me sit up and go “yay” or anything. lol (The wife says “God, you’re never satisfied, are you?” lol)

One last thing – this a personal request. If you are considering purchasing *anything* from Amazon or Amazon Japan this holiday season, please consider doing so through the Yuricon Shop. Just click through any item at all and then go ahead and shop as usual. It won’t cost you anything extra and it will give me referrer fees that are, at the moment, much needed. Many thanks in advance.

And that wraps it up for now – happy Yuri hunting until next week!

What? A theatrical release of Project ICE? It’s not that I hated the original OVA (although I didn’t think it was great either), but I thought it didn’t really make any waves commercially.

And I will skip Brulee, thank you. I think those “falling in love with your sibling” stories are simply too heart-wrenching since, face it, it must be the lousiest thing that can happen to anyone.

Skim by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Awards in Canada, but Jillian Tamaki’s name has been left off the nomination.

It is neat to hear about a live-action Bubblegum Crisis movie, but in that same press release they mentioned the possibility of a new Anime series. I’ve long lost faith in them getting around to ‘Tokyo 2041’, but if this news is any indication of what it might be then this is what I really want to watch out for.

I’ve never seen ICE, I’ve only heard how crappy it is, but what do you think the chances are of them compiling just all the good moments into a film, assuming there were any at all? The trailer seems to have a couple nice images going for it at least.

I was wondering when they were going to do the next Strawberry Shake Sweet, although it made since they would compile it into just one more volume since it is just finishing its serial run.

With Marimite in 3-D, my guess is they are trying to make the characters come across more lifelike in a whole new way, granted they always felt lifelike regardless when you watch the series.

Fable 2 is completely open in the question of partners. You can flirt with, bed, or marry a member of either sex (or both). But you do need to keep a close eye on their preferences screen (there is one for every character you meet) which lists Straight, Bi, Gay/Lesbian and asexual as choices I have seen.

It does indeed have cross-dressing points as well, so if you give your female character a beard or have your male protagonist wear a dress this will effect how people see you. Much like real life I suppose. If your life was full of bandits, trolls, magic and british humor.

  5. Emma says:

Yeah, Fable II is completely variable. The only thing you can’t do with a woman is get her pregnant, lol. Which has it’s benefits. In the game, as in real life, kids are more trouble than they’re worth.

“If your life was full of bandits, trolls, magic and british humor.”

I believe you just described sean’s life at least.

A live-action BGC? So soon after the Iron Man film, with all it’s neato armourific CG?

    What were the odds?

  9. Hazel says:

I quite liked Project ICE, because at first I thought it was just a lame sci-fi, but then they had a random girl-girl moment on a motorbike thingy and it suddenly became a bit mental and weird. So this news is quite exciting for me, lol.

Skim didn’t win the 2008 GG’s Award, but has been nominated for, and won, several other awards.

RightStuf has updated their Marimite website for season 2, with profiles for Noriko and Touko and a trailer. Apparently the December 2008 issue of Otaku USA will include a Marimite poster.

According to Ichijinsha’s online calendar, Strawberry Shake Sweet volume 2 is due out January 17 (along with “Junsui Adolescense” by Kazuma Kowo).
I think it was once slated for December but got pushed back, since the ad in Yuri Hime 14 just vaguely says “due out this winter.”
