Yuri News This Week – February 21, 2009

Yuri Anime

The big news this week (for me, at least,) is that Funimation has licensed the number one and two series on my “I wish someone would license these anime” list. Look for more news about El Cazador de la Bruja and RIN: Daughters of Mnemosyne at the Funimation News page.

Not that anyone here cares, but Futari ha PreCure AllStars teaser and full trailer are available online. AllStars unites members of the previous six casts in an “all-star” series.

Eric P. points to the latest issue of Anime Insider which reports that Revolutionary Girl Utena is getting a rerelease in Japan, with Limited Edition extras including a booklet and bonus disc featuring commentary by Kunihiko Ikuhara. A decade after it first came out, I wonder how it’ll be received?

Snatches of Yuri

Sean is pleased to have found a lesbian best friend in Urusawa Naoto’s Happy!, which in most ways is completely unlike it’s title.

And the appallingly stupid Akikan manga has developed a probably Yuri-service can/master couple. For those not yet appalled by this piece of dreck, the story follows anthropomorphized soft drink cans and their “masters,” with a lot of panty shots. (A **lot**.) In the manga, one of the female characters ran out to buy a can from a vending machine and ended up with a girl instead. Aru is the anthropomorphized form of a sports drink.

Other Yuri News

sapphire_sophilia is proud to announce that the first book of her Yuri novel series Crimson Stains on the Solstice Moon is available on her storefront. She adds “What’s posted is 1st Edition: Crystal, which means it won’t have all the spiffy pictures in it like other light/yaoi novels until 2nd Edition: Sapphire.”

It’s great to hear about El Cazador and Mnemosyne! I hope they both do well. (everyone buy them, please!)

Speaking of Utena, There’s supposed to be a remastered version flaoting around, with 5.1 audio. Does Central Park Media still have the US license? There is a whole generation of fans out there who have never seen Utena and this would be a perfect opportunity. (plus I would so buy that new edition ^_^)

Great to hear about Utena, thanks for that info! I hope you will stay so reliable source of information and give us some hint where to find it later =3. Otherwise, I would be very clueless, as usual after all ^^.

Coincidentally I re-read my old reviews yesterday and got myself into quite nostalgic mood. (Not sure about right expression.)

  3. Filo says:

ArcaJ-As far as I know, Central Park Media is still in ‘hibernation’, along with most of its titles including Utena, unfortunately. Funimation took over ‘Slayers’ from them, but chances are Utena may be getting the same treatment as Sailor Moon.

  4. I’m gonna make a second shot to get the March 2009 issue of AI. I want that for keeps.

The link for sapphire_sophilia’s book doesn’t work O_o”

I’m glad Japan is getting Utena, it’s an awesome series :)

  6. @Anonymous – fixed the link.

The first remastered DVD box of Utena has already been released in Japan…for the not-so-affordable price of around 30,000 yen ($320 US). And that’s only half the series.

The second one is due out in March, I believe. A 10-disc CD soundtrack set has also been released. ($125 US…)

  8. Katherine says:

Holy cow, that is a lot of cash to drop, even on one of my favorite shows… @_@;; It would be great if somebody re-licensed this show (like Funimation) and released a remastered version over here…

So hey, just wondering: is “snatches of Yuri” an intentional pun, or just a happy accident?

  10. Victoria says:

I’d get the Utena rerelease just to listen to Ikuhara’s commentary track. He normally waves off the weirder parts of the show with even weirder answers, (“The open shirt symbolizes the man and the car becoming one”? :D ) but who doesn’t want more insight into the making of one of the greatest and most intelligent shows in history? Erica, are you going to review the rereleases? Some of the younger fans might need an introduction.

  11. @Victoria – Well, I’m not running out and buying this, but should it cross my desk through luck or fortune, I will certainly do so!

  12. Anonymous says:

It’s not the rerelease, but I am working on something to remind people of just what Utena means…it turns out I never really understood, myself.

    Who am I? MUHAHAHAHAHAHA….

    ::runs::

  13. @Anonymous – Great…. Don’t forget to tell us whenever you’re done with whatever it is, whoever you are. Because I don’t check Fanfic.net or YouTube.

  14. Cuddlyness says:

    Oh, neither of those… ;D
