Sasamekikoto Anime on Crunchyroll

October 6th, 2009

I’m pleased to report that Crunchyroll has obtained the license (limited to US and Oceania this time… don’t blame them, blame stupid country licensing issues) to Yuri anime Sasamekikoto. Here’s hoping that the anime captures the book’s zaniness without losing the solid emotional story in the back and vice versa, that it doesn’t wallow without the comedy to temper it.

In honor of the news, I’ll review Volume 5 later today. :-)

I just love their press release that says this series is “one of the most famed yuri manga of all time in Japan.” LOL I’m thinking not so much, really. But, yay for Yuri fans anyway. :-)

So, what do you think is the “most famed Yuri manga of all time”?

Marimite or Sailor Moon maybe? Although those are “Yuri manga” so much as “manga with Yuri,” but they’re both pretty famous, both in Japan and overseas.
Did this comment get double posted? Kept entering the wrong password, silly me.

    …of all time?

Are we talking Shiroi Heya no Futari, like, first/important/influential?

Or are we talking “female relationships/non-explicit romance” like Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Marimite, etc?

Or are we talking actual Yuri Yuri, like…
    …Aoi Hana?

Or Yuri YURI Yuri, like Maka Maka? XD

I don’t know about Japan, but I think Utena was the most influential for us USA-ers.

Of course, “one of the” is a wonderfully elastic phrase. Would it be considered, for example, one of the top 50 most famous Yuri manga? One of the top 100?

    ^_^ … top 1,000, surely? …

  4. Ten bucks says that you all pick your *first* Yuri series – the one that got you into Yuri – as the “most famed.” :-)

  5. Cryssoberyl says:

Probably Rose of Versailles, if that counts as Yuri.

  6. Marimite hands down.

At least, in the last decade. Marimite has had the most parodies ever animated in recent anime history:

Lucky Star, High School Girls, Shinobuden, Higurashi, Strawberry Panic, Cromartie High School and tons more (especially that scene where Sachiko fixes Yumi’s scarf–possibly the most renowned scenes in Yuri anime). Not to mention, it’s sort of weird seeing Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann x Marimite crossovers, so it pretty much strikes a chord that even a shounen audience is vaguely aware of Marimite.

I’m sure there are lots of parodies to Rose of Versailles and the “prince” theme Yuri, but my vote goes to Marimite.

Most famous (at least in recent times) would be “Aoi Hana”. Of all time perhaps something like “Oniisama e”? And no, those are not my first Yuri series either ;)

  8. Manga – not anime or light novel series.

Most of you are thinking anime, not manga.

This comment is a little late to the game, but…it’s a bit of a difficult question since Yuri isn’t a terribly high profile genre right now (as compared to, say, shonen action, or BL). If Rose of Versailles counts, I would consider it the most famous Yuri title in Japan, but if you mean series that have a canon Yuri-centric plot… that’s pretty tough. lol Especially considering how faddish manga readers’ tastes tend to be. Sasameki Koto and Aoi Hana must be among the most famed Yuri manga right now as a result of their adaptations, but since the influx in Yuri titles only began recently, we would probably need to wait for several more years to see which title (among all of the Yuri manga available now) has the most staying power.

Just on the Sasamekitio Anime itself, in ep. 1, that’s one heck of a snap roundhouse kick for a sweet little schoolhouse Yuri anime. ^_^
