Fantitlement, A True Story of Manga Fandom

October 7th, 2009

With sincere apologies to everyone that really does support the manga industry, I offer for your entertainment and amusement, Fantitlement, Volume 1, a story of Fan Delusion.

  1. Funny how the one making all the demands is in a cage suspended over lava.

  2. I thought it appropriate that she’s in a silly costume, but there is no deeper meaning to the lava. Or the cage.

  3. I was looking at the whole ‘cage over lava’ setting as sort of a symbolic thing. The fan is quite literally in a position to demand nothing from the publisher who has the controls to the fan’s fate (or the fate of her favorite manga series in question). Cause the studios don’t have to listen to their fans or readers opinions and criticisms. If this was Toei, they’d pretty much drop that fan right into the lava, close their doors and still think they’re doing it right.

It’s not hard to see that there’s nothing to stop publishers from releasing a series their own way, but that’s not the case in this video. What we have here is a publisher who is for all intents and purposes doing something that most business folk dread, which is dealing with the fans directly. He doesn’t want to lose the fan base which is why he’s not dipping her into the lava and he’s actually trying to educate her on how the business works without making her aware of her present condition. Unfortunately there are some fans out there like this one who just don’t know what goes on in the industry even if they’re caged in it.

  4. Wow, that’s some impressive overthinking of a setting I chose completely at random!

The punchline actually made me laugh out loud. Should’ve seen it coming, though.

  6. @Erica: “that’s some impressive overthinking”

I’m a scientist. I don’t think, I observe! Plus some of the best stuff that happens in the world of imagination can be the direct result of sheer randomness.

I could not see this while waiting for the bus to go home, because of the decrepit version of Internet Exploder on this computer.

However, not having yet seen it, but having seen the title, I want to stress that this is not the fault of the mgt. here, but rather it is your fault … you should have recoded that site to make it compatible with obsolete browsers. Interest, time, or capability in doing so are no excuse – I’m forced to wait somewhere from half an hour to an hour to see it and that is intolerable.

d^_^b …or something along those lines

  8. That. Was hilarious.

Now having seen the production, I must hasten to add that while you should rebuild that site from the ground up to be compatible with whatever old or fringe browser I might wish to use – including an animated ASCII version if I should access it via a text based browser – I do want to make it clear that it should be entirely with your own funds.

And of course, Xtranormal’s interest in having their site rewritten from the ground up to satisfy a vanishingly small segment of a freeloader user base does not matter – your mandate is to convince them.

d^_^b … and other silly fantasies
