Yuri Anime

The top news this week just came in last night, with the Nozomi/RightStuf panel at AnimeExpo. RightStuf is going to be releasing the digitally remastered Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) in 2011. According to prelim press releases on Twitter from their panel, the release will be in three box sets. No news whether a remastered movie (with a soundtrack that isn’t squashed) is in the works, so don’t ask. Or, don’t ask me, anyway. Feel free to drive RightStuf crazy with your questions. In the meantime, if you know a young Yuri fan, an anime fan who has never had the pleasure of enjoying the surrealistic exercise that is Utena, or just want to fuck with someone’s brains, this will make a great opportunity to get ’em, but good.

Nozomi/RightStuf also announced the licensed for Sora no Woto, which seems to draw interest from Yuri quarters, regardless of whether it actually has any. :-)

Not to be outdone in “moe with very little, if any Yuri, but fans like to see it there, anyway” Bandai Entertainment also announced that it has licensed the K-On! anime. (Also from Twitter, but here’s the ANN report.

Funimation weighed in with a few licenses of their own. Intersecting our interests here are the resurrection of Haibane Renmei and Serial Experiments Lain and a new license of To Aru Kagaku No Railgun.

And, although this is really no more than rumor and there is nothing, no proof at all, except wishful thinking and an ambiguously worded ad in Nyantype, there are persistent rumors of a Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Force anime. I usually don’t report rumors, but I’m kinda hoping this one is true. ^_^

Yuri Manga

My sincere apologies, I complete forgot to mention this last week – Candy Boy is now out as a manga from MF Comics. So if you loved your time with these two sisters that love each other more than anything, please consider supporting the creators and purchasing the manga.

I am once more going to mention that Rakuen Le Paradis, Volume 3 is out now. Why am I mentioning it again? Because I only recently learned that among the many artists contributing that I like, Hayashiya Shizuru-sensei is among them. Exhibit A:

That puts this magazine in strong contention for my favorite manga magazine I read right now, as it has three of my top artists in it.

I typically read about 5 manga magazines regularly, with supplemental others as the mood or opportunity strikes. In fact, just for fun, here’s what I’m reading right now: Ultra Jump, Ikki, Yuri Hime, Yuri Hime S, Ribon, Rakuen Le Paradis, with Comic Blade and Dengeki Daioh as my whimsy takes me, Comic Ryuu and CompAce when I can find them.

I reviewed (and enjoyed) Volume 1, and now Volume 2 of Morita-san no Mukuchi is coming out. I bet Morita still doesn’t talk much.
:-)

While I’m pimping 4- koma manga with a little Yuri, Hinagiku Junshin Jogakuen, Volume 3 is also on the way.

Also soon to be hitting the shelves are Yuri Hime comics Shinigami Alice and Sakura Buntsu and Yuri Hime S Comic, HONEY CRUSH, Volume 2.

And if I’m reading this right, a number of the artists from Yuri Hime have gotten together some of their original Yuri doujinshi for a new Yuri Hime doujinshi, Yuri Hime Collection, Volume 1. Which is freaking genius on the part of Ichijinsha if that’s true and I didn’t just totally misunderstand the press release, which is also possible.

YNN correspondent Katherine H. wants to let you know that the second volume of CANAAN manga is up for pre-order, “bad art and all.”

Drama CD News

The news has been sounded – Hayate x Blade Volume 13, which will be out in October, will be available in a deluxe format, with a Drama CD. I am so there.

That’s a wrap for this week.

I am completely ecstatic about all these licenses. Normally I buy stuff used years later due to my poor wallet, but not for these. They’re all anime’s that I’d -love- to buy, with Utena taking first priority of course. The only thing that could top that is of course Sailor Moon, if ever a time came.

  2. Senbei says:

I’ve been trying to collect the Utena DVDs from Central Park Media piecemeal whenever I spot them for a long time now . It’s basically resulted in having duplicate discs and large chucks of episodes missing. Thus, I am really excited about this announcement. RightStuf always chooses the right purchases and deals. I can’t believe I was able to get the $150 Gankutsuou boxset I’d been coveting for years for $20 in their mark-down bin.

Yay for Yoshitoshi Abe fans! I don’t have either of those series in completion either.

“regardless of whether it actually has any”

I suppose ending-up-living-together and offering marriage doesn’t count, then. Sora no Woto clearly has no Yuri, by that definition.

Wait, why did we consider Fate and Nanoha Yuri, again?

What do you reckon the chances of Utena have two subtitle tracks like Maria Watches Over Us is? CPM’s subtitles were frustrating with distinguishing between -san and -sama. Plus a new translation would be nice…

  5. @Anonymous – tell RightStuf! They’ve been open to that suggestion before.

Seems like any coming of age series about a small group of young women under the tutelage of a pair of slightly older young women as surrogate momma and poppa with younger tending to idolize older sets off some people’s Yuri goggles, for some unfathomable reason.

I lost the AC adapter for my Yuri goggles, and on battery power alone they don’t go high enough to catch the Yuri on Sora no Woto … but I liked CLEAN (Canticle for Liebowitz’s Extremely Adorable Nieces) in any event, and am very happy it ended up with Nozomi.

  7. Jenn2d2 says:

I quite literally jumped up and down in my living room yelling *OhMyGodPonies!!* reading the Utena news (the cats were not impressed). I have about half of the show, but couldn’t afford more at the time that CPM were releasing the sets. This is THE show that I’ve rued not going into debt for when it was first released. I am looking forward to giving Right Stuf lots of money in the near future.

The Haibane Renmei information also interests me, but I’ll have to calm down about Utena first.

  8. Katherine says:

    YES!! Another Hayashiya series!! ^___^

  9. Val says:

Am I willing to scrimp and save what little I can in order to spend it all in one shot buying an anime set that only served to be a complete mind screw the first time I watched it? Hell yeah! Utena! *jumps up and down like a little girl*

I’m both ecstatic and banging my head on the table about the Utena news. Like Senbei, I’ve been acquiring the Central Park Media dvds piecemeal over the last year or so, and am now missing only one of the dvds. Maybe I’ll wait and see whether RightStuf is going to re-do the subs before I spend the money to finish my CPM Utena collection and get that instead…

Also really excited about Haibane Renmei!

  11. Cryssoberyl says:

Finally. After so many years, finally, Utena once more. Nozomi truly is the giver of that which fans desire most, and I cannot wait to reward them.

  12. I took have all the DVDs but one. And I’m glad that RightStuf is looking to resurrect one of the first two Yuri gateway anime.

Here’s what I suggest. Put your thoughts about the subs in coherent format. Don’t rant, give specific examples if you can remember them. For instance, the translation of the English word “Duelist” to “fighter.” That was pretty pointless.

Write up an polite email, then let it sit for a few days, then re-read it. Out loud. Make sure you sound as intelligent as you are.

    Then *email* RightStuf with it.

Tell them, and I bet they will listen. They’ve been pretty good about that so far.

  13. Ashrie says:

If I didn’t already have all of the Utena DVDs, I’d be ecstatic over the news it’s getting a new release. But instead I’m ecstatic at the opportunity for others to see this series. It still is one of my top series of all time. So glad it’s getting the treatment it deserves! :D

Now if only Sailor Moon could ever be revived in the West… Sailor Stars anyone? How about it, RightStuf?

    And yay for Railgun!

I just finished the last disk of Haibane Renmei, and all I can say is, Wow. Thanks yet again for leading me to an incredible series I never would have tried let alone purchased. Just amazing, although admittedly when I saw the boy I started cursing, because its a cheap and boring addition and I thought here we go as usual, but I was wrong and it was handled well, he’s a secondary character and not her romantic interest at any time, a friend, guilt and perhaps one-sided on his part at best, with Reki’s feelings very obviously all wrapped up in Kuramori from begining to end just as Rakka’s feelings become for Reki. Not romantic Yuri but definitely Yuri. Regardless, I have another top favorite and a selection I’ll be gifting to a few and recommending in general. Thanks again, it was well worth buying to say the least.
