I’m going to be guest lecturing today at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. By Skype. Nice, huh?
Prof. James Welker’s “Cultures of Manga an Anime” class has provided a slew of great questions about Yuri that I will bravely attempt to answer coherently.
We’re keeping our fingers crossed that we can record this and you can at some point in the future amuse yourself by listening to me flail. ^_^

Good luck, ma’am. I do hope you will be able to record it so we can listen in. I’ve always wanted to listen to you speak about Yuri awesomeness. :)
I’m a student in James’s class, and I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the talk. I don’t think you could see me (judging by the display we saw from James’s webcam) but I’m the guy who asked at the end about how you got into the fandom. You also answered my question about Yuri tropes, and it was a surprising and interesting answer.

@Andrew Holliday – You’re correct, I couldn’t see you, but thanks so much for the great questions. I did my best, but man, talking to a little white light on my computer is *way* harder than talking to actual people.
Thanks for the tropes question – I get that one semi-often and it’s not what people expect to hear, usually. I didn’t get to really talk about moe at all or its relationship to “Story A” and the whole “first crush” space.
@Erica – that sounds like it would’ve been interesting as well. Is it something you’ve discussed on this blog in the past? Perhaps I’ll do some delving if so.

At first I was upset by the last-minute nature of this announcement, as I would have liked to listen in on such a lecture. Then I realized that such a feat would have been difficult regardless of how far in advance I knew about it (as it is too late in the term to sneak into what I assume is a rather small class without attracting attention). So congratulations! Nice to have you in town, digitally or no. Please do post a recording if you have one.
@J – I understand your feelings, but this us a blog, so repeated updated “status” type posts come off as weird and unnatural. As this was a class, not an open event, I’m not entirely sure that giving details earlier might have been useful to you anyway.
However – if you decide to organize a Skype talk for me that’s open to the public, I’ll be sure to let everyone know ahead of time. :-)
