Breaking News: Yuru Yuri Anime

March 26th, 2011

Namori-sensei’s Yuru Yuri from Comic Yuri Hime has been officially given the go for an anime series.

On the one hand, I’m happy for Comic Yuri Hime editors, who have been working for this for a while. And I’m happy for fans of Yuru Yuri. But on the other hand, it is quite possibly the least interesting series running in Comic Yuri Hime in my opinion and I can’t feel especially excited about it. It’s a very formulaic, moe schoolgirl story with a bare veneer of Yuri, so that should cement its popularity with fans of Hidamari Sketch, K-ON! and other cute girls being cute, cutely-type series.

I am glad because this is the first Yuri Hime anime and I hope desperately and probably pointlessly that if this does well, they will then try to animate something I like better. But in reality, anything I like is going to be less ambiguous and therefore probably less popular/successful. ^_^

In any case, congrats to Namori-sensei and the folks at Ichijinsha!

3/27 Update: Yuri Yuri anime website is live.

    Personaly, I would have pick Tokimeki Mononoke Jogakuen for an anime adaptation. It’s a pretty good comedy.

    Very good new anyway^^

    The tree which fills the arms grew from the tiniest sprout;
    the tower of nine stories rose from a small heap of earth;
    the journey of three hundred miles commenced with a single step. (64)

    I guess I could hope its successful enough that they try a few more, and of those the ones that are toward the side we’d like to see are successful enough that they try a few more …
    … and, voila, in a mere half century, we arrive!! ?

    Not having the patience of a Laoist sage, I guess I’ll hope that if a story with more depth is a strong commercial success as a manga, its more likely to be animated if the ground has been softened first.

  3. @BruceMcF @Kashim9999 I hope for a Ameiro Kouchakan Kandan animation packaged with the next volume of manga, the same way Morishita-san ha Muguchi did.

    Well, its northern hemisphere spring and hope springs eternal.

    One slender reed of hope is that the new jmanga site with digital access to online japanese/english chapters, with what seems like it might possibly be ad hoc serials of titles that they carry …
    {breathe}
    … could get the digital rights to enough of these mainstream shojo Yuri titles to support an ad hoc serial of that content.

    Another slender reed of hope is that DMP looks to the Digital Manga Guild venture to branch out from the BL emphasis, and decides that there are Yuri titles that are inside the margin of being promising for that business model despite being beyond the margin for print runs in some language markets.

    Cast enough seeds widely enough, and if there is fertile ground somewhere around, they have a chance to take root and grow.

    And of course, subtitling cover disks and subtitling slideshows of Drama CD’s makes for a quite appealing subscriber incentive for either kind of site, while official YouTube releases of the same could make for innovative advertising for those sites.

    Could whoever runs Comic Yuri Hime be doing in Japan something like what Viz does in the U.S.? http://subatomicbrainfreeze.typepad.com/subatomic_brainfreeze/2009/07/ikki-naruto-continues-to-fund-comics-i-actually-want-to-read.html sez: “IKKI: Naruto continues to fund COMICS I ACTUALLY WANT TO READ

    “I’ve always liked Viz’s plan in the US manga market: release safe, boring hit titles, make a ton of cash, and then use some of it to fund the distribution of awesome under-the-radar titles that could never possibly break even…”

    ;)

  6. @Anonymous – Yes – they are. They find things we want to read like anything from *Yuri Hime* with money brought in by other comics running in their other magazines and the anime based on those comics.

    Seriously, folks, can we PLEASE get it into our collective heads that Yuri is a teeny-weeny niche market? Really, it is.

  7. BruceMcF says:

    Quite. Our hopes for what may happen are tempered by the realization that even strong percentage growth in the core market is not necessarily all that many total customers in the bigger picture.

    I’m rather exited for this. While Yuru Yuri is not one of my top favorites out of Yuri Hime, its entertaining and I really do like the slice of life gene of anime. I really do hope this does well so some other even better series also get anime adaptions.

    Yuru Yuri as announced as one of Crunchyroll’s simulcasts for summer. One and a half cheers: hip, hi …
