Other News

YNN Correspondent Jenna M points out a followup to a story in a May 2008 YNN report:

“Robin Brenner has just published some of her research with Snow Wildsmith on the relationships American LGBTQ fans have with Yaoi and Yuri, in a book called Mangatopia. The chapter is called “Love Through a Different Lens: Japanese Homoerotic Manga through the Eyes of American Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Other Sexualities Readers”.

The Google books preview is available here, but isn’t complete.” (Erica here – it shouldn’t be complete. People who want to read the book should buy it, or borrow it from their library system. Otherwise the authors don’t make money.)

Thanks Jenna for the update!

Other “____/Yuri” mashups I would like to see…

    air racing/Yuri
    Private Spaceship development/Yuri
    Deep Space exploration/Yuri*
AI development/Yuri* (I think this has been done)
    Japan Rail/Yuri
    Mega building project/Yuri

    Got any other ideas?

*I actually have ideas for these stories banging around in my head for a while but not really sure how to proceed with them.

Felix, I would like to see those too :) especially if the stories realistically have *adult women* as the main characters instead of shoehorning teen or preteen girl characters into air racer/private spaceship developer/deep space explorer/AI developer/railroad worker/real estate developer roles. Also, if the lesbian and/or bisexual main characters realistically acknowledge being lesbian and/or bisexual (like what I heard about the gay characters acknowledging they’re gay and facing down other people’s attitudes about gays in What Did You Eat Yesterday? by Yoshinaga) instead of the author ignoring that stuff like in cliché stories.

  3. There’s been a fair amount of space exploration Yuri, in the early days, now relegated to the obscura of my doujinshi collection – there were loads of sci-fi lesbian fiction written in the 80s, too. Most of it was excrable, as most of anything is. I believe that Katherine V. Forrest wrote one, (if you don’t know who Katherine V. Forrest is, you should look her up and read her books!) Daughters of the Coral Dawn, is the title.

    Wow, that brings me back….

@Erica – Thanks for the reading suggestion. I have been looking for some lesbian themed SciFi I haven’t found any that realy caught my eye.

@Anonymous – Off hand the closest current manga-ka doing anything like this is Fujieda Miyabi. While probably more idealized then you are looking for, his stories (yes Fujieda-sensei is a guy) are for the most part about women who actually do things together and actively acknowledge that do love other women.

When it comes down to it, I want my Yuri to be more then about someone falling in love with their perfect senior/Onee-sama at an overly idealized school setting (though I don’t hate if that is an element of the story). I want my couples to do something together. Run a tea shop, fight aliens during AU WWII, fight each other in large scale magical battles for fun… You know have adventures. I want a wide variety of science fiction/fantasy/alternative history setting Yuri. Part of the reason I love series like Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Touhou, and Strike Witches, along with the works of Fujieda Miyabi, is because the couples in them do these things and by doing so become lovers.

@ Felix, there’s a great story by Kurata Uso called Linkage that mixes AI development and Yuri. Great stuff, like pretty much all of Kurata’s works, IMHO.

@Cryssoberyl – After I wrote that I remembered that short, but I couldn’t recall the title, thanks.

    “…fight aliens during AU WWII…”

…and howzabout fighting Nazis during OTL (Our Time Line in the alternate-history genre’s fan lingo) WWII?

Speaking of GBLT news IRL, also see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15630789 (relevant? I dunno. I do know that some manga is sold in Polish translation too, FWIW).
