Oniisama E…Licensed.

March 20th, 2012

I cannot believe I am about to type this.

This is not rumor and I have done some due diligence, and this appears to be actually legit: Oniisama E, (Dear Brother) Ryoko Ikeda’s classic high school drama…has been licensed by streaming site ViKi. You can find it here: http://www.viki.com/channels/5849-dear-brother The license is global except Italy and Japan. Rose of Versailles has not been licensed by ViKi and they were told it is not available.

I will say four words about this: Sainte Juste. At last.

The ViKi CEO has added a few words about their licenses to their blog. If you, like me, had some questions, check it out.

When I read this I had to check the date, but April 1st is over a week away!

Having last year ploughed through an old low-res VHS-rip with artefacts the size of your hand, it’ll be nice to see this in decent quality!

not sure if you noticed, but the subtitles on this release are a bit strange.
Re: Ep 5, when “Princess” Fukiko drops the kenzan flower holder on Rei’s hand, they translated kenzan as “frog”.
FROG?! What?! can you explain that?

  5. @juri – Kanzen is actually referred to as a “frog” in English. It’s not a bizarre translation at all.

Look at the title here as an example: http://www.stonelantern.com/Ikebana_Kenzans_Flower_Pins_or_Frogs_s/50.htm

Here’s the absolute best way to deal with this kind of thing:

Politely contact ViKi directly, tell them the details, suggest a better translation (although in this case, I would stand by “frog” as correct.) If it gets changed, thank them. Their translations are crowdsourced, so there are fans just like you creating those translations. There are bound to be mistakes. This happens not to be one of them.

Being enraged over small things means you have nowhere to escalate for big things. ^_^
