Yuri Anime: Bodacious Space Pirates (English)

April 29th, 2012

Back in February, I was persuaded by longtime Okazu reader, Cryssoberyl, to watch a new anime called Bodacious Space Pirates. Due to the salaciousness of the name I was a little hesitant, but was quickly absorbed in what I consider to be a very fun story. I did my preliminary review at that time.

Another reader, Helen, pointed out that Jenny and Lynn were a couple and another longtime reader, DezoPenguin, pointed out that they are a couple in the novels…and when they director said there’d be no romance in the series, fans were devastated that that meant Jenny and Lynn too….

(These two paragraphs are a perfect example of why I value my Yuri Network so highly! I didn’t know any of this, and was glad to learn it all from you.)

The upshot of all of this? Well…the director lied. And gosh I am so happy to say that. ^_^

In episode 17, Jenny and Lynn are reunited in front of the Hakuoh Yacht Club, acting as provisional Bentenmaru crew…with a kiss. Actually two kisses, just to make the point. ^_^

And, as service-y as it was, Jenny is dressed as a bride because she was supposed to have been married and Lynn is dressed like Lady Oscar because the director is not a moron. ^_^

I have been enjoying the heck out of this series as it streams (free! legally! on Crunchyroll) and I had every intention of buying it when Sentai Filmworks releases it on DVD. (Can I be cynical again? Who wants to bet that Sentai licensed it because of the title and will be disappointed….?) ^_^ Now, even moreso, for obvious reasons.

In any case, Bodacious Space Pirates is now a Yuri Anime and has pretty much entered the race for Top Yuri Anime of 2012.

Ratings:

Art – Generally meh, exceptionally bad for this episode, but whatever
Story – Fun, with a light coating of awesome
Characters – Fantastic and getting better
Yuri – There’s Yuri! Squee!
Service – 1 and that’s why I say…

Overall – 10

Two anime ratings at 10 in a row? I’m getting soft.  ^_^

I was rather surprised on that episode as well. I was not expecting any sort of Yuri moment at all, and when they both kissed, I had to backtrack and re-watch it to make sure my eyes weren’t fooling me!

I didn’t watch that when it streamed, and when I did have time to sit down and watch it, I said to myself, “aha, I see why Erica suddenly tweeted about 2/3 of the way through this series about how she likes Miniskirt Space Privateers.”

And, yes, how wonderfully convenient that Lynn was still in cosplay from being one of “The Cosplay Pirates” … though once framed that way, that is quite convincing regarding how Lynn would cosplay, which makes it all that much better as a set-up.

I was actually just wondering what you thought of Bodacious Space Pirates and episode 17. Yes it was truly wonderful episode. People talking about Jenny’s and Lynn’s relationship was part of the reason why this series first caught my interest. As for my expectations for this episode, honestly I expected a very brief scene, possibly not actually showing Jenny and Lynn kissing. So its an understatement that what we got totally blew me away.

Overall, Pirates is right now my favorite anime series of 2012 and I could definitly see it being the top Yuri series of 2012. Possibly the only two that might top it as best Yuri anime are Horizon and Lagrange, depending on how each’s second season goes.

As for Sentai’s licence of it, I think it might be a combination of looking for more SciFi anime / not letting Funimation have it.

Ah! Now I have to watch this. The name put me off and the directors statement, I was waiting for the Okazu green-light or thumbs down of death.

    Goody. New fun. It’s better than re-watching my Yuri/Girl-Power anime collection again…and again…and again…

Well, forgive my rant, but, you can watch “Bodacious etc.” free and legally on Crunchyroll if you reside in US. Here in Italy I’m afraid I’ll have to wait for the DVDs. Meh.

  6. BruceMcF says:

@Rob ~ to be precise if you live in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, or South Africa.

As far as I understand, when Animax is involved, Crunchyroll rarely gets more than that non-Animax Europe northern part of Europe.

  7. LS says:

If it helps, the Japanese title has absolutely nothing to do with bodaciousness (mouretsu = burning / flaming)

  8. LS says:

Actually, I’m wrong, mouretsu is more raging / hard-charging

  9. @LS – Yes, as I pointed out in my original review. However, the title of the novels, “Miniskirt Pirates” is just as salacious, so it makes sense in a tedious kind of way that they went with a (pointlessly) service-y title for the series.

  10. Cryssoberyl says:

Who knew? Not I, that’s for sure! But there’s no doubt I’m delighted with what has unfolded.

2 kiss among 26 episodes and tagged yuri totally bullshit
