July 1st, 2012

The news is in from the Funimation panel at Anime Expo – Funimation has secured the rights to Ikkitousen GG and XX and Jormungand. They have also licensed Michiko to Hatchin, which was a really interesting anime that kind of slipped under most people’s radar and Blood-C among other titles. I just watched the first episode of Michiko to Hatchin, and it’s weird but I think it would have been a lot more depressing if only it had been a little less depressing. I mean sure, it was basically 20 minutes of a childhood so dark it made Harry Potter’s look like Richie Rich’s, but it was almost cartoonishly overdone to the point where it started to get hard to take it seriously.

In all fairness, I should mention that I’m sure the next episode will be *substantially different* and probably feature 99% less child abuse. So, uh, don’t let that turn you off too much.

  2. @Anonymous – Absolutely the first few episodes of Michiko to Hatchin were brutal, which is why the rest of it is so interesting. It never leaves the slums, not really and is less poignant and more better for that.
