July 7th, 2012

It’s *all* top stories this week!

Yuri Anime

Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Sailor Moon and, in an anniversary event, a New Sailor Moon anime was announced. Squee!  No major details as of yet, we don’t know if the original voice actresses will be returning, but everyone is still in the business, except of course, Seiya’s voice actress, Shiho Niiyama, who passed away in 2000. There are plans for the series to have simultaneous world-wide release, something that made me sigh in relief. Right now they are angling for a summer 2013 release date. Personally, if it were me, I’d just start with the whole team, say two years later, and start in on a new series, new bad guys, etc.

From YNN Correspondent Yaritza H., we learn that the “to commemorate the release of Aoi Hana Vol. 7, they are going to hold an exhibit with the Enoshima Electric Railway. The information comes straight from the Manga Erotics F website.”

About.com’s Manga doyenne, DebAoki interviews JuYoun Lee on Yen Press’ Talent Search, plus loads of tips for would-be manga creators  This is a must-read for aspiring artists.

JManga will be doing a Panel with Publisher’s Weekly’s Calvin Reid and Deb Aoki and JManga’s own Robert Newman at San Diego Comic-Con on the ‘Future of Digital Manga’. They are giving away prizes and making announcements about this summer’s Yuri projects and, I am totally guessing, but, probably about their iOS app. The Panel is on Friday, July 13 at 11:00-12:00 in Room 25ABC. Prizes will be goods from Akihabara, JManga points and a new iPad! I think this panel is definitely a do-not-miss if you can make it, do. Report back.

And, if you missed me on the Huffington Post’s discussion “Is Coming Out Passe’?”, here’s the link to the recording. I come on at about 12:30.

That’s all the excitement I can take in one week.

Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge.

Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

I’ve heard that Michie Tomozawa (Rei) is retired.

  2. @Andrew – She officially retired some years ago, but I just took a look at her recent credits and she still looks like she’s working. ^_^

Sailor Moon. This is the greatest news…of all news that is or could be great…

I’m still holding out for Nozomi to acquire and release the original series though, and I can only wonder how a new anime series will influence any negotiations.

Optimistically, we could assume that a successful worldwide reception of the new series could oil the skids toward releasing the original, especially as some kind of “package deal” license.

On the other hand, Toei’s mind doesn’t seem to work that way…a successful new series could make them inclined to sweep the original under the rug as it were, and/or it might have a chilling effect on western distributors desires to obtain the original…

    What do you think?

  4. @Cryssoberyl – I can’t tell you what I think completely, because I have some back channel info I can’t share but….

I know for a fact that there are companies here that have looked into getting Sailor Moon and there are many obstacles, which is why you have not seen it here. So many and such steep obstacles, that I’m inclined to think there’s something else going on, not just regular J-company weirdness.

In short, I do not think we will get the original Sailor Moon in the US again and not just because of the new series.

I’m glad to hear of a new series, and hope that the former actresses reprise their roles, but I have no expectations, because it helps me stay sane. ^_^

That’s very disheartening to hear…it’s a sad irony that a series which is so important and so influential in anime history has been mishandled to the degree that it has, while vastly less successful shows are released as routine…

I guess all we can hope for is that the new series will meet fans’ expectations.

(…and while I have absolutely no delusions that it could ever possibly happen, for this fan at least, getting Ikuhara on board would be a great start… :P)

Pretty convenient timing for the Enoden exhibit, looks like I’ll have to visit Kamakura again.

Toei seems to hate their popular anime properties at every phase of their life cycle. The extra episodes hastily pushed into Nadia were pretty terrible (though Anno et al. managed to make them rather absurdist) and Sailor Moon post-Ikuhara wasn’t very win-riffic either; Stars’s writing/directing pretty much recycles ideas from past seasons (not particularly well) and quite missed the point of the manga ending in my opinion. SuperS jumping wildly between allegorical-and-rather-naughty and forcibly-politically-correct seems like it might indicate the goings-on between management and production.

Hopefully someone not Toei does the new series. I expect Ikuhara wouldn’t want to go near them either, in case he’s being considered.

If they do go the Ikuhara route though, I hope they also get Enokido for the script. His recent work on Star Driver was rather nice (and borrows a few stylistic bits from SuperS).
