Random LGBTQ News

Fantagraphics is offering a 3-issue “subscription” for Volumes 4-6 of Wandering Son. This is very sensible for bot us and them.. It guarantees us the next three books and gives them a good idea of how big their market is for this series after the initial drop off.

Prism Comics is once again offering their Queen Press Grant to a comic creator. The application period ends on October 1, 2012.

I’ll be helping Prism out at New York Comic Con, which is right around the corner on October 11-14, 2012. Rica Takashima will be there with Geeks Out, at table 1974. Prism will be at table 1875. Also at NYCC will be the premier of the first episode of Rose of Versailles, followed by a talk with Susan Napier.

Autostraddle has the most lovely gallery of pictures of lesbians from the last 150 years. This just made me smile all afternoon. Take a look and you’ll smile too.

The Yuru Yuri festival in Akihabara was photoed and chronicled by Comic Natalie. In a touching tribute, Scott Green scrapes a bunch of random Yuru Yuri fanart from Pixiv over at Crunchyroll news.

Yuri Manga

Important reminderGirl Friends: The Complete Collection 1 in English from Seven Seas is hitting the street on October 2.

The November issue of Comic Yuri Hime is up for pre-order, the cover story is still by namori and looking artistically manga page-like.

Yuri Anime

The trailer for the second season of the Jormungand anime is now streaming. Looks like a game is in the works, as well.

Other News

Not LGBTQ related, but very worthy of your time, Vertical will have manga artists Moyoco Anno at New York Comic Con creator of Sakuran, which Vertical just released. It’s…really good. Stop by the panel and show your support! There’ll be a number of anime/manga personalities at NYCC, so check ANN or Crunchyroll to plan your paneling!

A K-ON! GPS. Set it on Yui and tempt fate. ^_^

That’s a wrap for this week!

Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge.

Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

Hum… While I think that’s a great idea of Fantagraphics, it’s pretty expensive to ship to ouside of North America.

I live in Germany and I usually order the already imported books at Amazon Germany. There they are $20 per volume, shipping included. Ordering directly via Fantagraphics would make $50 for three volumes + $30 shipping costs and potentially additional customs duty.

If there is no customs duty to pay, please let me know, whoever may read this. ‘Cause I really love both the series and the author and might reconsider. :)

  2. @Karin – Yes, shipping from one country to another is expensive. That is a given. It has always been son, and in recent years has gone up in price dramatically. That is true for me shipping from Europe or Japan, as well as you.

Thanks for the notice about the Fantagraphics subscription. While I already had v4 of Wandering Son pre-ordered from Amazon, I’ve cancelled that order and entered a subscription at Fantagraphics, in hopes of encouraging them to produce volumes 5 and 6 in a timely fashion.

I also found that they’ve scheduled publication on the complete Pogo, v2, which was good to know.

  4. @dm00 – I’m glad to be able to share the news. Thank you for your support of Wandering Son. ^_^

  5. Judy Justice says:

    Same shipping issues here.

I order mine from Amzon.fr and have no shipping cost that way.

I might send a mail to Fantagraphics to at least let them know about the serious readers outside of US. For such a niche product, I guess internationnal sales matters.

Girl Friends coming soon! Yay! Now how many copies would it take to get it to rank in the Top 10 New York Times best selling manga?

  7. Senbei says:

I am not being negative here, please hear me out.

As excited as I am that Seven Seas has finally got around to doing another Yuri title, I’m not sure I want to run out and get Girl Friends. I already own this title in Japanese because of who authored it and have read it in its entirety. Why do we want to support Yuri that’s geared toward the male-gaze? Doesn’t buying Girl Friends inherently make a statement that this is the kind of Yuri we want in English? We should just support the company because they’ve decided this is what’ll sell and we should be happy with it? I want to support Seven Seas but their decisions about series are always so frustrating.

  8. @Senbei – There are many answers to your questions, and most of them can be summed up as “other people are not you.” ^_^

Other people did not buy the Japanese books, because they cannot read Japanese and/or it is very expensive to ship. Supporting the English-language volumes is a way for them to actually *support* the creator and the industry (as opposed to just reading scans) in a legal way.

Other people who are not you are not bothered by the male gaze (and/or they might argue that since the creator is a woman, that doesn’t apply.)

Other people who are not you might really love the hell out of this story and want to buy it to own it.

Other people who are not you might buy it just to give their library a copy.

Other people who are not you might find it enjoyable despite the male gaze and see the realistic story of two high school girls behind that (this is my personal opinion, as it happens. I really liked the realism that underscored the story. Only the first volume read “male gaze” to me, and I have no problem with that, since that is what Milk-sensei does.)

It’s pretty clear to me, at least, that she creates manga that suits the audience for which it is created. Seven Seas is that audience – they publish what they like to read.

If you do not wish to buy it in English, of course no one will force you to. As for myself, I support all Yuri in English – even stories, like Yuru Yuri, that I don’t actually enjoy. Because every sale builds the market in the eyes of the publishers…and that is what we need in order to get more Yuri.
