Yuri Network News (百合ネットワークニュース) – January 4, 2014

January 4th, 2014

YNN_LissaHappy First news report of 2014! Since the new anime season is imminent, I thought I’d start the year with a few trailers and some news.

Yuri Anime

Sakura Trick will get its first airing on the 9th. No idea yet if anyone will be streaming it legally. I know a bunch of folks are looking forward to it. Here’s the minute long trailer and you can decide for yourself. ^_^ Thanks to YNN Correspondent Grisznak for the link. ^_^

Speaking of trailers, the first Akuma no Riddle trailer is up with some character intros and vague mood-setting visuals. ^_^

Saki Zenkoku-hen trailer is online and all of a sudden, I really wanted to see this. ^_^

Let us not forget the Bodacious Space Pirates movie coming in February. Second trailer is up.

Wow, really? A new Houkago no Pleiades movie? Cool. (Corporate-sponsored/themed anime is all the rage. We’re going to be seeing a lot more of this in days to come.)

Noir is gonna look pretty great in the newly remastered BD Box set.

And, of course we’re all still waiting breathlessly for…something, anything…on the upcoming Sailor Moon anime.

No trailer but, while you’re upgrading your Bubblegum Crisis collection, consider adding the Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 box to it. (Best anime music ever.)

That’s a wrap for this week! Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge. Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

Ye gads. All the money I saved from not buying Sword Art Online is going straight to the Noir BDs.

Sometimes, you can’t go home again. Tokyo 2040 was one of my earliest anime purchases, and I remember liking it a lot. However, I recently rewatched it after many many years, and I’m afraid to say it left a hideous taste in my mouth, as it suffers from some of the most blatant “Christmas Cake”-ing of a woman I’ve ever seen in anime.

It is repeatedly stated that Sylia, who is at most in her mid-twenties, is now too old and decrepit to use the Knight Saber suits correctly, that her “mature woman’s body and mind” are simply not up to the stresses of using the suits and cannot interface properly with them. Sylia goes along with these statements with a kind of wistful, resigned regret that is angering to watch.

The dumbest part of all of this is that Sylia does, in fact, get back in the suit later in the show, and shows absolutely no adverse effects either to her health, or in her combat ability. So in addition to spouting all that ageist garbage, the show turns right around and contradicts it all, giving it a whole additional layer of annoying pointlessness.

The original Bubblegum Crisis, unfinished as it may have been, was vastly superior – and that isn’t nostalgia for the original, as I watched it many years after Tokyo 2040. If anything, Tokyo 2040 is the one I should’ve had a nostalgic indulgence for, but it was all blown away, leaving me wondering how I could ever have liked it.

    • I agree. Of course, I watch everything with minimal delusion (unless I prefer to be deluded.) I hated the lame self-fulfilling prophecy ending of Tokyo 2040 the first time around.

The original was better storywise, but musically it was nowhere as good. YMMV, but Akira Sudou as Sekira is still one of my favorite CDs. ^_^

Whatever flaws or nitpicks ‘2040’ may have, I personally hold it superior to the OVA, and not just musically. The animation is better dated, and it has a wild and crazy fun story with a beginning, middle and end that always grips me every time I revisit it.
