Yuri Network News (百合ネットワークニュース) – June 28, 2014

June 28th, 2014

YNN_LissaJust a few items today, as I’m working all weekend and feeling rushed at the moment.

(I know a bunch of you sent in news. I’ll get that up next week. Thanks for your patience.)

The New York Times talks about how bara manga artist Tagame Gengoroh’s art has been adopted as official art by this year’s NYC Gay Pride parade.

Victoria McNally’s A Ridiculously Comprehensive History of Sailor Moon, Part 2: Coming to America is up on The Mary Sue.

OtakUSA reports on The Daily Show‘s taking a few potshots at CNN’s slavering coverage of the zOMG reveal that pictures of fictitious characters that look childish are not actual children, in regards to the news of new child porn laws in Japan. The comments at the top are worth reading and do a better job at IDing some of the issues in play than Stewart’s writers.

An interesting look at why creating Strong Female Characters isn’t really enough. (Hint: You gotta give them something to do, too.)

That’s a wrap for this week! Become a Yuri Network Correspondent by sending me any Yuri-related news you find. Emails go to anilesbocon01 at hotmail dot com. Not to the comments here, please, or they might be forgotten or missed. There’s a reason for this madness. This way I know you are a real human, not Anonymous (which I do not encourage – stand by your words with your name!) and I can send you a YNN correspondent’s badge. Thanks to all of you – you make this a great Yuri Network!

zOMG just got the AnimeSols Dear Brother Box 1. Its in a two disk eco-box, eps 1-6 on disk 1, eps 7-13 on disk 2.

Animesols just announced that they are going to be trying two things new, after some disappointing results in their core mission of introducing classic old anime to a new audience:

    (1) They are going to subtitle and stream the first three episodes of a number of series they have rights to try to crowdfund, and set up a target to crowdfund the subtitling and streaming of the series. The targets would be around 1/10th the DVD targets, so think targets of $1,500-$2,000.

    (2) They are going to launch a crowdfund drive for a new series, presently streaming on Crunchyroll, The File of Young Kindaichi Returns, both since its a genre (crime/detective) that does not attract conventional North American home video licensing interest, and also to try to bring more new people to the AnimeSols site to also possibly become introduced to classic anime. The streaming at AnimeSols will be by embedding of the Crunchyroll stream.

As a stipulation from YTV, the first drive for The File of Young Kindaichi Returns will be launched when episode 15 streams.

  2. While I agree with the general idea behind the Trinity Syndrome article, I’ve thought similar things about other stories, I am a bit grumpy that they start it out around HTTYD2 since after I saw the film I think they completely misinterpreted what the character’s role is (and, while you can interpret actions, you can’t really do that per-say and argue if someone was a main character or a supporting one, not easily anyway!)
