Today, we march.
The Women’s March on Washington, and all the Sister Marches in all 50 states and dozens of cities internationally, have issued a comprehensive and progressive political platform and today I invite you all to get out and join your voice to others’, be seen and heard in your city and state. If you cannot march, you can still be active in support.
Please consider joining a march near you. We need to be seen by the whole world resisting this push towards fascism and the undermining of American democracy by people who do not care whether we, our friends and family, live or die. I’ll see you out on the streets today and back in the office tomorrow.
Home from the Women’s March on NYC. It was encouraging to see a half a million fellow citizens turn out to reject hatred and fascism. Everyone was supportive and friendly. No counter protest at all.
The moment that really made it special was as we passed St. Patrick’s and the crowd started chanting about women’s rights, and the church just up the street started pealing the bells. The noise was surreal: the crowd, the bells, the media helicopters overhead. And suddenly Norma realizes the bells are playing “This Land is Your Land” and we all get choked up. Then the bells start playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and we’re all crying but singing. As we walk away, the bells of St Thomas Episcopal Church started playing “We Shall Overcome.”
Thank you Saint Thomas Church. And thank you my fellow Americans. This is what democracy looks like.
The pessimist in me thinks the marches won’t do anything, but the optimist in me likes the positivity & energy produced by these marches.
If even a small percentage of people stay active after the marches are done, things will change for the better.
That’s why I’ve got a little bit of optimism left in me.
Me too. It’s going to be rough, there’s no question, but it only took 12 years to get rid of Hitler. It might come to a war, it might not and one way or other people are already dying, but it will change.
