Yuri Anime: Asagao to Kase-san OVA Release Date and Main Cast Announced

December 7th, 2017

The Asagao to Kase-san official Twitter account had a major announcement today – Asagao to Kase-san OVA has a release date and main cast!

Yamada Yui will be played by Takahashi Minami, who has had roles in Aikatsu! and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

Kase Tomoka will be played by Sakura Ayane, who has had roles in Psycho-Pass, and Land of the Lustrous.

The OVA will be getting a theater release on June 9, 2017 at the Humax theater in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Advanced ticket purchases will come with a special clear file and commemorative ticket.

Here is the promotional video of the new OVA on Youtube. I remind you that the team for the OVA is bilingual, so please take a moment to like the video, and comment!

Based upon Takahashi Hiromi’s manga from the defunct quarterly Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari, the series has a popular 6-minute music video,  Kimi no Hikari on Youtube, which has gained almost 300,000 views.

The Asagao to Kase-san manga is sold by Seven seas in English as Kase-san and Morning Glories.

  1. I’m excited for this; normally I prefer the manga over the anime, but there’s something about Kase-san that just works better for me as an anime (from what I’ve seen so far, at least).

  2. So happy to see the announcements and PV.

Pre-sale starting January 13 is already right around the corner.

Slightly lower price on those advance tickets than for other pre-orders of movie tickets. I’ve been tempted to consider that as a very vague indication about the film’s length – but that may well be an entirely wrong way to look at this. A very long way to say the length of this “OVA” hasn’t been mentioned, yet, as far as I could tell.

Tokyo and Osaka are well represented on the list of cinemas while in many regions in Japan the OVA will open in one theather. Limited numbers of screenings and venues combined with an announced short time period the films might be available in those theatres will probably mean that reception will be difficult to track and there’s going to be more speculation. I hope even more cities will be added based on the response to pre-sales and based ultimately on butts in seats come June.

Based on the bi-lingual attention from the official channels – it seems reasonable to assume screenings will not ultimately be limited to Japan …

    • I don’t know about that last bit. Based on the bilingual marketing team, I would have expected English subtitles on Kimi no Hikari, but we didn’t get those. So, I wouldn’t presume that. The problem is, as it always is, that North America is a massive place when compared with Japan. If they hold a LA or NYC screening how many people will they reasonably get? 50? 100?

  3. You know I have no way of knowing. I used the word reasonable without any foundation in reason for doing so. Depending on the occasion and venue, turn out in the US might be significantly less than that, if a screening were to be attempted. No more than two? But, I really don’t know.

Eiga.com has given the Asagao to Kase-san film a page of their own.

    • No, obviously. It was conjecture. My guess is that they might partner with an event like Anime Expo for a screening, but not go for a full theatrical release here. Even Your Name had limited theater releases in the USA. (Limited compared with non-anime movies, that is.)

  4. Right, possibly no more than two people, if someone else besides you and Christian LeBlanc were to attend “Morning Glory” screenings somewhere in the US -going by this comment section alone- if they planned a general cinema release. You know you want to be wrong on this more than I want you to be wrong on this but even in our most optimistic frame of mind we know a general release isn’t realistic, probably. Depending on venue and occasion, more than two people, possibly fifty but quite possibly a hundred people max…

Different aims again perhaps but it remains murky to predict which films will be released with subtitles and how – as separate localised release of their own in various territories or with the option included right into the Japanese disks? I don’t know who decides that and what the criteria are. English subtitles were created for Chihayafuru and yet the films -so far- only screened in-flight and at select festivals- the subtitles weren’t included on the Japanese disks. In this Corner of the World was released on Japanese disks with subtitles included right from the start while the film screened at limited venues at first.

My comment was more hopeful than reasonable. Yamada and Kase-san always make me feel optimistic but …

  5. … asagao ni tsurube torarete …

  6. Saw a stack of “Asagao” flyers in a cinema lobby today. Some other people took one or two as well. The day had already been made but this gave it some extra shine…

According to the Asagao Twitter account, a cinema in Kobe has also recently been added to the theatre list.

I just want it to have subtitles on the DVD… Pretty please anime disc makers 💗
