Yuri Event: Yuriten 2018 Exhibition Rescheduled With New Tokyo Location

March 19th, 2018

It is my very great pleasure today to confirm that the Yuriten 2018 Yuri Art Exhibition has a new Tokyo location and has been rescheduled!

Yuriten 2018 will take place in Osaka, March 31-April 8, and now, in Tokyo April 28-May 4 at Lightbox Aoyama. Fukuoka dates and locations are still being finalized. 30 artists are still confirmed for the show and Village Vanguard now has a webpage up for creator goods.  A reliable informant tells me that they can be purchased via buying service. Ole reliable uses Buyee.

I took a look at Lightbox Studio and I have to say, it’s a pleasant venue and location. And, so I have rebooked my Japan trip and will definitely be there for the opening of Yuriten in Tokyo!

I’m going to do a Yuribu tour while I’m there, as well. There’s one I haven’t been to, yet. ^_^ If there’s anything else I can get to between now and then, I’ll do my best!

20th anniversary Revolutionary Girl Utena Manga: Beautiful Thorns (少女革命ウテナ20年記念日新作)

March 18th, 2018

Image Restored/Edited by abbysayswords for The Empty Movement, 2018.

In my review of the first chapter of the 20th anniversary Revolutionary Girl Utena manga, we discussed Touga and Saionji and how they regained some memory of Anthy and Utena after 20 years had passed.

Today, before I begin discussing the 2nd chapter of the 20th anniversary Revolutionary Girl Utena manga by Saitou Chiho and Be-Papas,  which ran in the March 2018 issue of Flowers magazine, I ask you to take a moment to think back on high school. For most of my readers, that will be long enough ago for memories to have begun to fade. Think back 20 years ago. Who were you then? What did you want? I remember little of high school and even less of myself in my early 30s. It’s a long time ago.

Arisugawa Jyuri (we have an official transliteration of her name at last) also remembers little of the past. On the eve of a photo shoot, she dreams of drowning.

Jyuri is an accomplished famous fencer. In her mid-30s, there’s no reason to assume her skill is any less now than it had been. In the final match for the World Title, her opponent appears….it’s a man, who wears a rose ring! They fight, but the electrical system shorts out due to a lightning strike and the match will have to be postponed. She wonders who that man was and Miki, who had attended the match to cheer Jyuri on, comments, confused, “What are you talking about? Your opponents were all women.”

As we might have expected, beautiful, long-limbed and graceful, Jyuri is also a professional model. And, as we watch, our eyebrows crawling ever higher, she does a photoshoot…is that fucking Ohtori?! Yes, it is Ohtori, and she stands in the greenhouse, or sprawls across the chairs with signs that literally point to the waiting room, while our skin crawls.

Jyuri is also with Shiori. I have a lot of conflicted feelings about this. I hate series that act like the only possible pairing is among the characters in the story. But bear with me here, because it’ll get even more conflicted. Shiori is Jyuri’s agent and manager. She rejects a costume that shows too much cleavage. “We have to protect Jyuri’s image as a dashing fencer.” Which leads Jyuri to talk about something on her mind – she’s thinking of leaving fencing. Shiori says, well I have to tell you something, too. And standing there is the man who Jyuri fought in the fencing match! Wearing a Rose Seal ring. And, as the Jyuri watches, he poaches her manager. Shiori leaves Jyuri, on the arms of Ruka. Jyuri breaks down crying that she needs Shiori.

We see Jyuri in those days before she took up the uniform of the Student Council. Just another female Ohtori student, as she sees a little Shiori, looking like a princess. A princess, she reasons, needs a prince. So, when Shiori arrives at Ohtori and comments she finds the fencers admirable, Jyuri took up fencing and managed to obtain Shiori’s admiration. She would be this princess’s prince. One day, Ruka find Jyuri on her hands and knees, desperately searching for her locket in a field where she thought she dropped it.  Ruka and Jyuri fight. She is unable to defeat him in this informal bout, but he gives her the locket she has been missing….he knows. He knows what she is.

Ruka and Jyuri face off again. This time he brings them to the dueling ground where Shiori is the Rose Bride. Pushed to her limits, Jyuri has a vision of a young woman, (we recognize Utena,) who floats down from the castle and gives her the “Power to Revolutionize the World.”

Jyuri sees Shiori sitting by the river, slipping in, and jumps in to save her. She is drowning….she is being left to drown…she is being drowned. We know this scene. We recognize that bench. We can hear the music. We know it and we know that it never happened to Jyuri.

Young Jyuri wakes in a hospital, where Shiori tells her Ruka died saving her. Jyuri wanders down a hallway and finds herself in a chapel, where child Utena sleeps in a coffin full of roses. The child calls her a goddess of battle and Jyuri remembers that Ruka had called her his “Goddess of Battle, Lily.” The child begins to walk away, Jyuri asks, “where are you going?” The girls replies, “I want to see that girl again.”

Back in the present, Juri finishes the fencing match and fingers the locket, still around her neck. Her opponent removes their mask and it is indeed not Ruka whom she fought, but a woman, (who looks rather put out.)

In the locker room after receiving the championship cup, Jyuri tells Shiori that she’s done. Shiori begins to cry – are you really not going to fence anymore? “No,” Jyuri says, I’m not going to fight for you anymore. I’ve been fighting to be your prince, to protect you.” She accepts that she really just loves fighting and will do it now for herself.

Shiori seems to understand. She tells Jyuri that she had had a dream of Ruka walking away from her, with a smile telling her that Jyuri has found the thing she was looking for.

Jyuri opens up the locket and we see that it still contains that old picture of Shiori. Carved by hand into the metal of the inside cover it says “Fight Jyuri!” in English.

The last page shows Ruka and Jyuri walking away from one another. The page says 「戦え樹璃」with furigana that reads “Fight Jyuri”.

Phew.

So many feels. But what actually happened?

Jyuri experienced three things in this chapter that never actually happened to her. We know that. She did not fight Ruka in the championship bout, she did not see Shiori drown, and…Shiori did not leave her for Ruka. Not 20 years ago. Not now.

It calls into question everything we know about her. What if Shiori never did any of the things we thought she did? The Black Rose arc was clearly feeding off of participants’ dark fantasies. What if Shiori wasn’t ever a master manipulator and was – and always has been – Jyuri’s closest friend who wants what was best for her? We may never truly know.

As I have been saying repeatedly, Saitou-sensei’s art has really grown in 20 years. The aesthetic here is even more gorgeous than we remember it. And I’d be okay with an artbook of Jyuri playing dressup. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 9 Gorgeous
Story – 9 I’m re-reading every word trying to pull out more meaning. Sometimes doing that is ridiculous, but here, it’s always worth the effort.
Characters – 9
Yuri – 4 I don’t know if Shiori and Jyuri are a couple, but they are certainly a partnership
Service – 5 – Jyuri playing dressup as a swordswoman and a lesbian. ^_^

Overall – 9

I am 100% in favor of Jyuri finding herself at the end of this chapter. I am 100% in favor of Utena looking for Anthy.

The next chapter will have to be Miki.

Tune back in two months from now when the next chapter is released in the May issue of Flowers magazine!

Yuri Anime

The Asagao to Kase-san Official Twitter account announced the brand new Asagao to Kase-san OVA main trailer video on Youtube. They’ve also added English to their header on Twitter and REALLY want to hear from you on their new video. Don’t forget to let them know you love it and can’t wait to see this OVA. ^_^

Kase-san creator Takashima Hiromi’s Twitter feed also announced a new web commercial for the Kase-san manga  and the upcoming chapter, “Sakura to Kase-san” in Wings magazine.

To Lie Angle Yuri anime is hitting Japanese broadcast TV in April, according to Paul Chapman at Crunchyroll. As I’ve said, it’s pretty much 150% fanservice, so my enthusiasm for it is low.

Yuri Manga

At Mikazuki Gakuen all the committees compete to run the school. The most popular committee becomes the Student Council in Pixiv Comic Yuri Hime manga,  Foolish! (フーリッシュ)

A young OL is deeply interested in her sempai at the office. So deeply that she becomes a creepy stalker in Yuri Kagi ~ Sempai no Himitsu wo Nozoitemita~ ( 百合鍵 ~先輩の秘密をのぞいてみた~) because of course she does.  ^_^;

Kara Dennison over on Crunchyroll News has the scoop that Seven Seas is putting out Yuri one-shot Beauty and the Beast Girl. And Joseph Luster reports on Seven Seas’ license of another Comic Yuri Hime one-shot Now Loading…! about a woman who gets her dream job as a phone game developer.

Yuri Event

Folks in or around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Monday, March 26 may wish to attend a lecture by James Welker on Boys Love, Yuri, and More: Tracing the History of “Queer (But Not Necessarily LGBT) Media in Japan at Temple University. I’m going to do my damnedest to be there to cheer James on and, I have no doubt, learn a lot from him.

Comic Natalie reports that the Yuriten exhibition is back on for Tokyo at Studio Lightbox in Aoyama for April 28- May 4. The website has updated with the date, location and participating artists.  I’ll let you know more when I get further details. ^_^

Catcher in the Rhyme Manga, Volume 1 (キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライム)

March 15th, 2018

Catcher in the Rhyme (キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライム) by Segawa Noboru is my new favorite thing ever.  ^_^

Takatsuji Satsuki suffers from that painful, paralyzing embarrassment that functions as a major plot complication in so many manga. She’s a lonely child, berated for not having skills no one has ever bothered teaching her. Unable to even manage a decent self-introduction, Satsuki is pretty sure she’ll be eating by herself forever.

While walking around campus looking at clubs she doesn’t have the bravery to join, she comes across Anzu and Ren, who are advertising for a “Rap Battle Club.” The prospect of rapping in public horrifies Satsuki, and although Ren and Anzu attempt to include her, she can’t…she just cannot…until she hears someone in her class unable to remember her name. And then another, and suddenly words pour out of Satsuki, many self-deprecating, some strikingly erudite, Satsuki ends with a loud, ringing pronouncement of her name, which is received with applause by the gathered students. Takatsuji Satsuki joins the Rap Battle Club. Or, it would be a club, if they had five members.

They are approached by another first year who wants to join, Harutsuki Utsugi. But first, she must let them know that she is a  transgender girl. The three girls respond with shock, then awe, and we see one painful panel as Utsugi can feel her hope slipping, then the three celebrate her joining…and she’s one of the club. It’s not that it’s never mentioned again, but when it is, there is a reason..because…

With four members, someone has to be a club president, so they have a short rap battle to see who wins. Ren takes on Anzu and wins, Satsuki beats Ren. Utsugi and Satsuki take on each other in a dozens that gets kind of rough. They both hurt each other a bit and although I personally thought Utsugi was better, she awards the win to Satsuki. Satsuki has now become the president of the Rap Battle Club.

The girls then turn their eyes towards getting a fifth and legitimizing member. When Anzu discovers Iroha Kaede on the roof, listening to some beats, we’ve found her. Break-dancing Iroha becomes our DJ and ta-da! we become an official club.

The rap rhymes are not brilliant, but I can follow most of the rhythm (which is indicated by font weight.). But, they are better than I could do, and fun and, as these are high school girls creating a rap culture for themselves by osmosis, it works just fine. Satsuki’s skill is to pull out complicated verbiage and rhyme it, but her stage presence has a long way to go. The school festival lays ahead of them now and that seems like a perfect goal for this manga.

I really like all the characters. For a Japanese manga, it manages a little diversity –  Satsuki is painfully shy, Ren is a tad vulgar, Anzu’s chubby, Utsugi’s a trans woman, and Kaede is a breakdancer, all things that put them on the outside of typical student life. It works well for a base to the plot and I’m a sucker for the sports-type competition manga when I like the characters. ^_^;

There’s no Yuri, yet, but I kind of think Satsuki and Utsugi would be cute together.

Ratings:

Art – 6 Loads of funny faces and fonts
Story – 8 Give me that blood, sweat and tears
Characters – 9
Service – 2 Very little, surprisingly. Some lingering glances at Anzu’s chest
Yuri – .005 Headcanon for now.

Overall – 8

Right now, it’s a manga about youth and friendship and teamwork and rap. And it’s fun. You should read it.

Yuri Visual Novel: Lovely Anemone

March 14th, 2018

Welcome to Guest Review Wednesday here on Okazu!

A few months ago, I was approached by Yuri Game Studio and Okazu supporter Luscious Spirit Studio with an offer of a VN to review, so I have asked our resident VN reviewer, Louis P. to take a look at it for me.  And here we are with another terrific review, so take it away Louis!

When Salena returns to the flat she shares with her girlfriend Lydia on the cusp of their one year anniversary, she sees something that any soap opera viewer would have been expecting, her girlfriend cheating on her with another woman. This person immediately taunts Salena that this betrayal was inevitable as Salena is asexual, and how could Lydia be fine with a relationship without sex? In tears, Salena breaks up with Lydia then and there and returns to single life with the ever-present fear that her asexuality will forever bar her from the romantic relationship she wants. The very next night Salena runs into Aanya, a fresh out-of-the-closet music student who already has a huge crush on her.

And so starts Lovely Anemone a game by Luscious Spirit Studios for Ace Jam, a game jam that ran through January of this year focusing on games with characters in the asexual spectrum.

I am not asexual so I cannot give a real opinion on how ace feelings are represented in this game. But the game’s story focuses on feelings that a lot of queer people can understand. The feeling of being in the closet and being afraid to reveal yourself, yet knowing you have to come out in order to have an honest relationship is something a lot of people can understand. We follow Salena’s thoughts as she wrestles with these feelings of fear that they bring up.

This fear about coming out and then being rejected is focused on when Salena starts dating Aanya. This plot is helped along with some of the cutest date sequences I have seen in a visual novel for a long time. As this game was written in only a month the story shoots for only the most surface-feel of Salena and Aanya’s (and Lydia’s) relationship that, while shallow, is still able to invest us in their relationship in a short time. I was very impressed by how torn I was when time came to make a choice between Lydia and Aanya the first time round. What is more, Aanya’s acceptance of Salena, while awkwardly written, is precisely the kind of acceptance you would hope to see more of in the real world.

Lovely Anemone is a short game you can finish in one evening. While the slightly awkward writing lead to one character saying: “Didn’t you tell her you were an ace?” it is clearly sincere in what it is trying to achieve..that is,  adding to the small pile of media containing decent representation of asexual characters and also providing a visual novel where the main character is endlessly fawned over by two amazing, butch romantic leads.

I really do mean that both Aanya and Lydia are dashing romantic fantasies that spend their time showering the main character with affection and kisses once the required angst is taken care of. It was exactly what I wanted from my silly brain candy that only takes a few hours to read. Before I ran into these scenes I was preparing to say Lovely Anemone was an okay attempt, despite its wonky writing and overuse of screen shake (just do it once, not three lines in a row) but, if you are like me and love the idea of cool butch girls whispering romantic compliments to you while they hug you then this will be great thing to read on a rainy afternoon.

Ratings:

Art – 7 A lot of CG considering they had a month
Characters – 5 Only the main three have anything going for them
Story – 6 Not bad for something written in a month…
Service – 4 Some nudity that seemed to be just there for service
Yuri – 7 Good but soapy relationships

Overall – 6

I had not heard about Luscious Spirit Studios before reading Lovely Anemone but I will be looking through their catalogue now and I look forward to their next project.

Erica Here; Thank you very much for taking a look at this for us. I think you speak for many here when you say that being fawned over by a couple of cool butch girls. ^_^
