Thanks to our Okazu Patrons for their support and feedback, we hope you enjoy the premiere of our first video from Yuri Studio 3.0. In this first of a series of videos about Yuri History, I answer the most common question I get about Yuri.
If you’ve ever wondered why Yuri anime and Yuri manga seem to be so often set in schools, watch this video to find out the answer!
Please consider subscribing to Yuri Studio, liking the video and all that, because YouTube is watching over us. ^_^
Do I understand correctly that a yuri with adult or young adult characters will carry a slightly different aesthetic idea than school yuri? It always seemed to me that such works are usually somewhat more realistic than another story about an all-girls Catholic school or cute girls doing cute things.
Every era/social/artistic/literary/fashion trend affects a work’s aesthetic. Aesthetic literally means, “a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or artistic movement.”
Your perception of any aesthetic is unique to you.
Maybe I used the wrong words, I wanted to say that most of the “adult” yuri that I saw were noticeably more queer than stories about schoolgirls. Especially in terms of LGBTQ terminology and culture.
School settings are the low-hanging fruit.
Much yuri is set in schools. LOTS of manga and anime are set in schools. Schools are hothouses. The kids are young, have more free time (without a job) and lack sophistication. They’re immortal and full of youthful energy, so they just go ahead and DO things. Drama ensues, and some of it is yuri.
Much the same could be said for senior residences, with more sophistication and less energy and immortality. Office ladies work too. I listened to soap operas when I was young. Plenty of fraught drama there. As you’ve noted, some girls’ love stories are evolving towards women’s love.
Thank you for the wonderful video. I’m glad to see more yuri manga/stories set outside school life. I remember reading Nana when I was in college and I thought why can’t there be yuri series set like this?!
Can’t wait for your next video!!
I’m not sure whether such a comparison will be objective, but Erica recently wrote a review on the four volume of a similar musical story https://okazu.yuricon.com/2020/07/02/tsukiatte-agetemo-iikana-volume-4-付き合ってあげてもいいかな/ , so if you are looking for a yuri version of Nana, you might like it.
