I am so very excited to present the newest Yuri Studio video today. One of the most common things I’m asked to do is explain when and how and why a series is considered Yuri, so today on Yuri Studio, please enjoy “What Makes a Story Yuri?”
It was a true team effort, with not only our amazing team here at Okazu – with many thanks to Louise, whose editing I rely on so heavily. I expected a different topic, but at a time when the “yuri or not yuri” debate often becomes even more important than the work itself, this is an amazingly relevant video. I remember how it got so hot that people even went as far as verbal manipulation, like calling female friends “closest persons” or constantly reminding that the character was bisexual, as if it somehow diminished their lesbian relationship.

I particularly liked the explication of the four main genres of manga publishing in Japan; I’d encountered them individually, but you made them crystal clear.
The only complaint I have is that your subtitles covered the Noir subtitles. I have hearing issues, so I always turn on subs if they’re there, so good on you for including them. But they should disappear when the current sentence is done, and especially when they interfere with a significant point, as here. I haven’t finished watching Noir yet, so my understanding plummeted during the clip.
Guess I have to finish!
I didn’t put subtitles over the Noir subs, so I assume that’s Google automatically adding them. I’ll check to see if I need to fix that. I’m going to be adding a Japanese subtitle track, but I won’t care if the English subs get overwritten for that.
I just noticed that the subs only interfere with the Noir subs if you use full screen video.
I had the same problem in the moment with NOIR, but I just temporarily disabled subtitles and the issue was resolved. I don’t know if this solution will suit you, but it helped me.
I’ve fixed the timing and removed the automatic subtitles, so that ought to solve the problem.
