Winter 2025 Lucky Boxes – All Claimed!

December 14th, 2025

4 large usps flate rate boxes stacked. It has been a while and I have *so much* (great!) stuff in my office that it was long past time for a new round of Lucky Boxes!

All four premium boxes with media, manga, candy, toys and goods from Japan, and goods from The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All or Love Bullet pop-up shops at Kinokuniya. They also include other flat fun things like artbooks, stickers, bookmarks or postcards which are equally random and frequently bizarre (and often not at all Yuri.) As always, there are random pieces of paper like memo pad sheets and individual flake stickers of random things. This time you might get a fancy little travel pouch full of cards, stickers and candy as well, also cute shit I picked up at Y/Con special to stick in these. ^_^

My promise to you is that you’ll get random things, sometimes in other in random things. ^_^ I assure you that this is all 100%, unadulterated stuff. I have shoved as much as I can into these boxes in hopes that I can walk into my office once again. ^_^

This round we have: 4 Large USPS Flat Rate boxes. They are all the same size, the image is imperfect and makes them look different.

Large Box 1 – $60 – Claimed
Large Box 2 – $60 – Claimed
Large Box 3 – $60 – Claimed
Large Box 4 – $60 – Claimed

2. You must be over 18, I am not policing books or recipients.

3. Email me with the Yuricon Contact Form with the subject “Lucky Box.” Use an email you check regularly, because I will reply asap. The first person who responds to my email gets the box.

Starward Lovers

December 11th, 2025

On a hot pink background, with blue title letters that read "Starward Lovers" the cast of secret agents are featured.Starward Lovers was a webcomic by Miki Brewster that appeared online from 2016-2018 and can still be read on Tumblr. In 2025 Miki ran a successful kickstarter and late pledges are still open right now, so you have a chance to get a copy of the book while supplies last and that window is open.

The story is a simple one. Jen is a young, closeted lesbian who has a crush on a very cool handsome woman who frequents the coffee shop at which Jen works. One day, Jen follows the woman when she leaves the shop and finds herself entangled in an extraterrestrial battle. Without anything specific to return to, Jen joins a team of lesbian secret agents, hoping to become closer to the mysterious woman, Red. Life is not tht simple and Jen ends up fighting for her own life, the life of those she loves and all of existence!

Both art and story are fast-paced, lots of action and movement. Overall I found it entertaining, with one caveat. The plot relies heavily on Jen’s low self-esteem. While this certainly can resonate with many readers, I’d really like to have a new plot other than “girl hates herself” and “they stole everything for her and now, she’s out for revenge”. I’m just saying, could we have a story where girl gets opportunity and goes for it and, despite fear and challenges, kills it? It is doable, I promise you! My dear friend and publisher Gideon Marcus has a fantastic YA science fiction story series, the Kitra Saga, (the first of which I reviewed here on Okazu) which do this very thing, with a queer cast and only the very littlest bit of cringe.

Here, Jen is closeted and self-loathing for not having ever had community. She finds her first community ever among the Intergalactic Society’s agents, who all turn out to be gay, even the alien. ^_^ I very much enjoyed the diversity of body type and ethnicity ( and I think there is an interesting discussion to be had about one of the very few white characters being an alien. ^_^)

From there the story is a bit tenuous, as it relies on womens’ low-self-esteem to work and every character has a sad story.  The climax is a bit predictable for all that, but the conclusion is heart-warming anyway.

Extra pages include character sketches and devlopments, storyboards and cover art and notes by Brewster for some fun behind the scenes action.

My backer level was pretty low this time, but the bookmark I received had my two favorite character, and a promo car for Brewster’s upcoming work  for next year. Starward Lovers was a solid PG-rated action story and I’ll look forward to Brewster’s story-telling and art maturing as she continues in her career. A good book or webcomic recommendation for the mature tween or early teen baby lesbian in your life. ^_^

Otherside Picnic, Volume 13

December 10th, 2025

Two women huddle together, one with mismatched eyes in a -shirt that reads "Awkward" in different fonts, the other with one transparent hand, while a huge red humanoid shape hovers over them. by Sandy Ferguson, Guest Reviewer

In Volume 13 of Otherside Picnic, we have the whole version of ‘Pandora in the Next Room’, the opening to ‘Hot Springs Invitation’ and Kozakura’s rebuttal story, ‘Packing as the Night Deepens’.

Initially in this volume it seems we are having a pause from the action of the previous volumes.  Pandora in the Next Room is a fascinating story, with either the subtitle of Sorawo’s slice of life or the adventures of Sorawo the Introvert. But for Sorawo, slice of life also means the Otherside which intrudes on Sorawo’s domestic peace through her neighbour in Unit 103 in her apartment complex. This interference leads to the further adventures of Sorawo the Introvert who is so rattled by this Otherside presence she becomes a reluctant houseguest, first with Akari and Natsun, then Kozakura.

To no-one’s surprise Sorawo finds being a houseguest to be almost as frightening as the Otherside.
After some uncomfortable third-wheeling with Akari and Natsun, Sorawo’s next adventure is with Kozakura.  They have an important conversation with Sorawo discussing her future and the Otherside.  Kozakura responds with her concerns, as well as her hopes that she could keep Sorawo and Toriko rooted in this world and not lost to the Otherside, in other words she doesn’t want them to follow Satsuki’s path.
Then Toriko turns up, and you can guess her mood considering that Sorawo had been asking everyone but her for help…

Sorawo has two explanations for this. One on the surface is her concern for Toriko’s school work.  The other is based on her belief that like her Toriko would want to keep her home safe, and Sorawo doesn’t want to bring her troubles into Toriko’s home. But, when much to Sorawo’s chagrin, Toriko accepts her invitation to spend the night at Sorawo’s place, Sorawo is like, what just happened here?

Now that the accomplices are together it is time to take out the trash from 103.  Once Sorawo’s domestic bliss has been restored, there is the inevitable after-party.

We begin ‘Hot Springs Invitation’ with a generous offer from Kozakura to Sorawo and Toriko, an offer that leads to ‘accomplice panic’, the offer is two free tickets to a Hot Spring. The panic is caused by Sorawo and Toriko when due to the revelation of a big cultural difference when Toriko mentions they will need to buy swimsuits, leading to Sorawo’s confusion when she answers that there is no need to do so, as they will be nude. “Hot spring culture in Canada is different from that of Japan.” I confess I was tickled pink at this moment, as ‘I got that reference’ as I lived near the Radium Hot Springs in British Columbia for a few years and enjoyed them, and yes bathing suits/swimming trunks were mandatory

This leads to a glimpse of the ongoing process of Sorawo and Toriko trying to understand the nature of their relationship, and the challenge to face their own issues the relationship exposes. So, in their accomplice panic Sorawo and Toriko come up with a solution, invite Kozakura to join them. Kozakura is annoyed, this was not part of the plan, but eventually she accepts her fate. On the trip to the hot springs Sorawo continues to process what lies ahead for them, and shares her anxiety with us as we will join them at the hot springs in Volume 14.

With ‘Packing as the Night Deepens’ I appreciate that these bonus stories do such a good job in exploring Kozakura as a character, especially when it comes to her relationships with Toriko and Sorawo.  While dealing with her frustrations that Sorawo and Toriko are dragging her along to the hot springs, she reflects on how these relationships have developed.  And in doing so, she comes to an unexpected conclusion.

Ratings:

Story – 9 An interesting combination of slice and life and horror.
Artwork – 9 The artwork is excellent in conveying both the slice of life nature of this volume as well as the terrors of Apt. 103
Character – 9 As Sorawo struggles with the various relationships in this volume, we see more of what makes Sorawo tick.
Service – 9 An interesting moment as Sorawo tends to a wound on Toriko’s ‘Otherside’ hand.
Yuri – 8 At this point it looks like Akira and Natsun are in the lead, maybe the hot pools will change things?

Overall – 9
