Kageki Shoujo Manga, Volume 1 (かげきしょうじょ)

November 15th, 2013

The Kouka Kageki Musical Drama Academy is a high school for talented dancers and singers who will go on to star in one of the Kouka all-female musical repertory troupes: Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter. Like Takarazuka, the roles are split into parts for Otokoyaku, actresses that play male parts, and Musumeyaku, actresses that play female parts.

Narada Ai is a typical girl…not. Not even remotely. Actually, she’s an ex-pop idol with a super-group who has retired after a scandal.

Watanabe Sarasa is a country bumpkin with a dream.

These girls are about to meet in the unreal-est of unreal circumstances ever in Kageki Shoujo (かげきしょうじょ) by Saiki Kumiko.

Naracchi, as Ai was known as an idol, is hoping to shake off her past, in which she reacted very badly to her male fans, in this all-girl environment. Ai’s not completely dysfunctional when it comes to men – there are two male teachers at the school who appear to be her only friends.

Sarasa is hugely tall and a good singer, but a bad everything else-er. She aspires to the role of “Oscar-sama.” She’s good natured, loud and very doofus-y, so when she tells everyone that she has a boyfriend, the resulting scramble to violate her privacy is understandable. Only her reluctant roommate Ai figures out who the boyfriend might just be and she’s not telling.

There are, of course, rivals. Star ballet dancers and singers who don’t approve of Ai and Sarasa in *their* elite class. And there are scheming upperclassmen who try to bully and berate them in traditional hazing, only to be met with disinterest by Ai and a defeating adorable baby seal-like quality on Sarasa’s part.

By book’s end, of course we’re rooting for them to be the class’s Top Star team and shut everyone up, but we – well, I, at least – want the story to take its time. I really like Sarasa and want Ai to heal whatever’s broken inside her and THEN for the pair to become the class’s Top Stars. ^_^

Not “Yuri” in any way, but for those of us who like Takarazuka, this is too cute to miss.

Morita-san ha Mukuchi Manga, Volume 7 (森田さんは無口)

November 14th, 2013

morita7Perhaps it was inevitable, perhaps not. Up until now, this series has been a lighthearted, goofy look at kids in school, with little to no service, but this time the cover and color front page of Morita-san ha Mukuchi, Volume 7 (森田さんは無口) are a bit…. Oh well, it was a good run.

Once past the offending art, Volume 7 continues on as it always has, with lighthearted, goofy gag comics about kids at school, their relationships with each other, their families and their daily life.

The cutest set of gags comes early on, as Mayu’s friends are taking about her while she’s out of the room. They are being effusive in their praise of their silent friend. She can hear them from outside and becomes too embarrassed to enter the room. Class rep Yamamoto finds here there, blushing outside the door and instantly surmises the situation. She listens in, to find the conversation has moved on and she is now being praised. She takes a seat next to Mayu outside the door. ^_^

Thankfully, the stalker chick is played down into one tired gag about not being able to see without eyeglasses.

A big chunk of the book is given over to the stuff that is going on inside Mayu’s head while she’s trying to decide what to say. Each potential comment or answer is represented by a little Mayu in her head with a sign. Overwhelmed at each turn of conversation by the noise and lack of consensus in her brain, Mayu misses her chance to speak.

The end pages remind us that it would be all to easy too see Mayu as someone alone, locked in her own head, except that she’s actually surrounded by friends who love her for who she is. ^_^

Some of the jokes are played out now. And the service is a bad sign. If it were me, I’d wrap this series up with the next volume.

I have an extra copy of this volume to give away!  Contiguous 48 USA states only this time. Let me know your name and where you are in the USA in the comments. I’ll pick a winner on Saturday in the YNN report.

Freezing Vibration Anime (English) Guest Review by Grisznak

November 13th, 2013

778369299_origIt must be Wednesday, because we have a Guest Review! Even better, we have a brand new Guest Reviewer. I love when that happens. ^_^ Today we welcome Grisznak, who has kindly offered to review something I had never heard of, much less watched. So let’s settle in with some popcorn as Grisznak takes the stage. /applause/

Anyone here remember Freezing? Yes, this series from 2011 with lot of bloo… I mean boob… well, technically, with a lot of boobs and blood as well. Another generic danger to the humankind (this time an unknown monster called “Nova”) and some scanty clad girls with super powers – we’ve seen this lot of times, haven’t we? Usually, in such series we can find some Yuri hints. But was that a good reason to watch? Not this time, trust me. Freezing wasn’t bad a anime – it was a very bad anime. So, why even mention it here? Because it is getting a second season. And, surprisingly, Freezing Vibration (sic!) isn’t THAT bad. After all that what I can say after watching some episodes. Full opinion can be made when this series will be finished. But let’s take a look…

This time our bunch of superpowered girls (called “Pandoras”) arrive in the USA, where group of scientists work on a program that allows turn every girl into Pandora. This project is called “e-Pandora” and you can probably guess that there’s something fishy about it. But before we find what’s going on, some dresses will be torn, some boobs revealed and some blood will be spilled.

There are some major differences between the two seasons. Freezing focused on Satlizer el Brigett, blonde meganekko whose nickname was “Untouchable Queen”. With such a nickname it’s rather easy to predict that character will be touched lot of times.

And most of the series was about that – Pandoras were fighting against each other, girls were doing something that could be called “Strip Fighting” and everyone was waiting until Nova appears.

The second season shows Pandoras on duty – there’s little place for girly fights and arguments,  there is serious business going on.  We have two groups – Pandoras and E-Pandoras. They are different, but they’re meant to cooperate. Of course, it won’t be easy, because E-Pandoras not only have to compete with original Pandoras, but they need to survive deadly experiments their makers are performing on them.

Lot of fights, lot of drama, but what about Yuri? Those who were watching first season already know that each Pandora has her male sidekick called a “Limiter.” To cooperate at full power, they need to perform a “Baptism.” (It amazes me how the Japanese creators use Christian terminology for what is simply sex). Our Untouchable Queen had problems with that and still has, but her Limiter was really the protagonist of the first season. Now he’s in the shadows; he rarely appears and hasn’t much to do. The second season is about girls. And this is good, especially if you’re Yuri fan.

Almost since beginning of the story we can see tension between leaders of both groups – Elizabeth Mably and Amelia Evans. And, this is not the usual love-hate, but rather a much more complicated relationship between two strong women who holds responsibility for their people. Yes, Yuri fans could be happy, seeing Amelia in Elizabeth arms at the end of the fourth episode. Of course, we have lot of groping, boob touching and other fanservice moments in this anime as well. Boys are still there, but they’re merely tools, without much use in the plot.

I’m always curious if they make clothes from some kind of very frail materials in anime. Remember Ikkitousen or any other series like that? Right, those anime where you can perform a punch and the girl’s blouse is ripping apart, often with bra as well. Freezing has same problem –  in almost every battle, participants have to lose some of their clothes. Years ago I found this amusing, today I found it boing… I mean boring. Still, original Freezing had an annoying tendency to mix fanservice with gore. Freezing Vibration has lost some of gore. And it’s good.

With a plot (finally), less gore and some nicely done relationships between characters, this series looks watchable. Still, I’m not calling this anime good – it’s a deep valley between Freezing Vibration and lot of good series. But, if you like to see something action and fanservice-oriented and already watched Ikkitousen, check this out. Of course, you have to break through first season (or just read summary in the web), but some sacrifices always should be made.

Erica here: Funimation is streaming both Freezing and Freezing Vibration online for free (with regional restrictions) so you too can “enjoy” what sounds like it might be some kind of fun.  Thank you Grisznak for the highly amusing review. I’m almost tempted to watch it now…but I expect that will pass. ^_^

Golondrina Manga, Volume 3 (ゴロンドリナ)

November 11th, 2013

In Volume 1, we met Chika who, after a bitter break up with her girlfriend, tries to commit suicide by car. To her surprise, the driver will not aid and abet her. Mistaking Chika for a boy, Antonio sees her reflexes and thinks she’d be a good candidate to become a matador. When he realizes that she is a girl, she refuses to back down from the challenge,

In Volume 2, Chika decides that she does want to embrace bullfighting – in order to die a fittingly dramatic death. She will die, she tells Antonio, in the ring, in front of Maria her ex. We get her backstory as she communes with the first bull she faces in practice.

In Volume 3 of est em’s Golondrina, having practiced for some time, and having killed 10 bulls now, Chika is deemed fit to debut. She meets Antonio’s team of picadors and, finally steps into the stadium as a matador. Chika is surprised to find that she is not the only female on the card.

Chika’s debut is a complete failure. She is unable to kill the bull gracefully and is not booed, but knows she has embarrassed herself. Worse, the other woman was magnificent and politely suggests that if Chika is not up to the task, she get the hell out of the way.

At which point, I was reminded, and I must remind you – Chika is 15 years old. Oh, right. Well, that changes everything, really. We are inclined to be more generous now. She is taken by one of the picadors to see real Flamenco dancing, and asked to really watch the footwork. Chika returns to her practice with renewed vigor and is given a second change to debut.

During her second “debut” it begins to rain, hard. People start leaving the stands in droves, but when they see that she is still in the arena, doing magnificent footwork, they return to their seats and shout their encouragement. As the final blow comes, she is rewarded with cheers from the audience, and the bull’s ears. She’s carried out on the shoulders of her team to raucous applause.

Elsewhere, young Matador Vincente watching this triumph, is even more intrigued by Chika than before (we met him in Volume 2.) He asks her out, they talk. He kisses her, but her only response is, “Ah, so yeah, I guess I really am only attracted to women.” Vincente is about to give up on himself, when Chika embraces him kindly, as mother might.

I have no idea what Volume 4 will bring us. I can dream that Chika and the other female matador will get together, but it’s just a dream. ^_^

Princess Knight Anime, Part 1 – Disk 5 (English) and Contest Winners

November 10th, 2013

As we reach the final disk of the first half of Osamu Tezuka’s  Princess Knight, things heat up significantly for Knight.

After Knight has many adventures (and again meet Satan and his daughter, who is now falling for Knight,) the King sets aside the crown in order to allow Knight to take the throne, but finally, Duralamin’s schemes pay off and Knight is publicly unveiled as a…gasp!…girl. Duralamin throws Knight into jail with her mother and puts his own son on the throne. (One is left to presume that he has paid off all the other nobles of the Kingdom, or surely they’d all be angling to rule.)

Knight finds a way to escape the jail and uses it to fight for her people, who are being cruelly used by Duralamin, as Phantom Knight. The disk leaves us wondering how, not if, she will manage to free Silverland.

And, actually, that was my only “complaint”…if you will. Had I been organizing the disks, I would have ended Disk 5 as Knight and her mother were dragged off to jail. It’s a pretty tense moment and would have made for a compelling cliffhanger. But no one asked me. ^_^

Now that Knight has been outed, I’m actually looking forward to the second half more than this half. Knight can be herself as a whole person as opposed to hiding and having Duralamin and Nylon being creepy about her.  From now on, Knight is a powerful, fearless Princess and just exactly the person who can save Silverland.
