The Moon on a Rainy Night, Volume 5 is headed our way this month. It’s up on the Yuricon Store, but more links to come, as it’s not yet up on CR or Bookwalker Global.

Coming up from Tokyopop is Yomogimochi’s weirdly titled Boys Gilding The Lily Shall Die!?, Volume 1. Let me talk about this a little bit. Tokyopop had this initially listed as “Boys Interfering With Yuri Shall Die!?” and I completely understand why they went with that, but neither title has anything at all to do with the story.

At Comitia this year I picked up a sample doujinshi of the first couple of chapters of this story. I was interested because the premise of girls in band always interests me, but the title was so weird and the description focused on the wrong thing too, so I had passed when it first came out in Japanese. But at Comitia I picked it up and it was what I thought it might be. So the story is about Katagiri, a very, very serious trumpet player and Aikawa, who transfers in and takes the top position. Aikawa has a boy friend. He is not important to the story, really. But Aikawa and Katagiri begin to have a rivalry/something else thing going on that is quite good and tense. Ignore the title and just get the book.

 Yuri Manga in Japanese

While we’re adding stuff by Kuzushiro-sensei, we’ve added Kimi no Tamenara Shineru, Volume 11 (姫のためなら死ねる) her “historical” fantasy about life in the Heian court with Sei Shonagon and Murasaki Shikibu.

Galette, No. 29  (ガレット) is also up on the Store, as is a collection of manga from the magazine by Uno Jinnia, called Mokuyoubi Ice Cream Morning + Night (木曜日のアイスクリーム 朝+夜).

Kashikaze’s Lonely Girl ni Sakaraenai, Volume 6 (ロンリーガールに逆らえない)  completes the set in Japanese. I reviewed Volume 1 of I Can’t Say No To The Lonely Girl in April.

Kodama Naoko’s current manga in Comic Yuri Hime, Usotsuki Hanayome to Dousei Kekkon-ron, Volume 1 (嘘つき花嫁と同性結婚論), is about a lesbian whose life is upended when a woman she used to crush on leaves her husband and asks to stay with her.

Via Comic Natalie, we have another (!) fantasy series starting in Comic Yuri Hime, but also a historical series set in the Taisho period, with  “Muryoku Seijo to Munou Oujo ~ Maryoku Zero de Shoukansareta Seijo no Isekai Kyuukokuki ~” (無力聖女と無能王女~魔力ゼロで召喚された聖女の異世界救国記~) a story of a summoned” saint” with no power and a princess who cannot use her power, and “Kanaria wa Kiraboshi no Yume o Miru” (カナリアは綺羅星の夢をみる), a romantic story set in the Taisho period about Fumino, a female student who dreams of pursuing a career in fashion, and a high-class prostitute who becomes her model…and I am really hoping that one rocks.

Yuri Manga in Spanish

Via Arai Sumiko-sensei’s X account, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All, Volume 1 is now available in Spanish for Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, México and Perú. I find it kind of interesting that this Spanish-language translation is going with the English-language title.

Yuri Manga in Japanese

Speaking of series I fell way behind on, I not only have to add the remaining volumes of this, but also update old links, but Kimi no Tamaenara Shineru, Volume 10 (姫のためなら死ねる) is now on the Yuricon Store. Those of you enjoying Kuzushiro’s Amayo no Tsuki (雨夜の月) , might be entertained by her interpretation of Heian court life, with diarist Sei Shonagan as a NEET blogger and Murasaki Shikibu as her buxom rival.

Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou., Volume 8 ( 私の推しは悪役令嬢。) manga tackles Yu’s arc with some amazing writing and art.

This series has been halted, and it’s digital only, but Monomo Moto and Izumi Kitta’s Liberty, Volume 2 (リバティ) is up on the Store, because it’s been sitting in my to-go-up list for a long time and I wanted it off there. ^_^

Japanese manga creator Aneido held a successful Kickstarter to publish their 18+ Yuri ero-horror manga, The Murderer And Her Runaway Desire in English and now you can download that comic directly from Aneido-sensei’s digital store.

Speaking of creator-owned work translated into English, via Natsuo Mutsumi-sensei, who gave this glowing praise, King Kurasaki is running their first Kickstarter to translate their Yuri manga,君と夏の音:You and the sound of Summer, into English! There’s almost 2 months left for this, so I’ll remind everyone gain, but I know I’d like to see this make it.

Aishitabun Dake Aishite Hoshii-! (愛したぶんだけ愛してほしいっ!) tells the story of a girl waiting for her prince on a white horse, who falls for a prince-like woman.

Galette, No. 27 (ガレットNo.27)  is up on the Store. Sadly, Galette no longer appears to be available on US Kindle, but they are definitely still available through Bookwalker.

Mikaunji’s story of random couples continues with Fuzoroi no Renri, Volume 8 (不揃いの連理). Read it in English as Assorted Entanglements, from Yen Press!

Queer Comics

Via long-time friend of Yuri, Niki Smith, she wants you to all know about Succulent: Trans-Inclusive Sapphic Comics on Kickstarter! The campaign page describes it this way: “Succulent is a lush collection of sapphic erotic comics. Twelve tales which are hot, humid, and above all, dirty.” With more than a week to go, this comics is only a few hundred dollars from it’s goal and is almost certainly going to make it, so jump on into the loam! ^_^

Anime News

Along with the live-action movie, Yamashita Tomoko’s Ikoku Nikki is also getting a television anime. Presumably all this attention comes from this series having been names best manga of 2023 in DaVinci magazine. Crystalyn Hodgkins has the details on ANN.

ON This Week In Anime, Nick, Chris, Lucas and Steve ask Is The Anime Girl Band Era Here? and the answer seems to be “Yes!” Some of my favorites are called out, including Hello Melancholic, but, what? No K-On!?

Via YNN Correspondent Michelangelo H, House of Chavez is a new Yuri VN from Winter Wolves, that he thinks looks promising. “Play as Adriana and travel to Europe with her brother Bruno. Meet Silke, who attended to Adriana’s grandmother Maria during her final moments, and Dolores, a stunning and secretive woman on a trip. Explore House Chavez’s shadowy hallways and navigate the mysteries within.”

Other News

Clover DeMerrit has offered up an interesting look at From Takarazuka to Terayama: The influence of queer theater on Revolutionary Girl Utena. Discotek has released Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s. I am really hoping for StrikerS at long last.

The trailer and details for the anime film adaptation of Fujimoto Tatsuki’s Look Back is up on ANN. Anita Tai has the details. I couldn’t make it through the trailer without crying….this movie is going to be gorgeous and it will kill me. (T_T)

Christopher Farris and Steve Jones on ANN take a pretty balanced look at the discourse around So, Is Sound Euphonium Queerbaiting or Not?. My position is that this only looks like queerbaiting if one does not recognize that intimacy does not equate to romance and people can be intimate without being lovers or family. I don’t see anything like love or romantic interest between Kumiko and Reina, just intimate friendship. Drop by the Okazu Discord and let’s hear your take on it.

Wrapping up the winter season, Steve Jones completely captures my feelings about Metallic Rouge: “A wholly realized version of Naomi and Rouge’s arc would have been wonderful, with this desperate act of soul-binding providing the tart yet tantalizing cherry on top (Gideon the Ninth fans know what I’m talking about). The half-baked version the anime gives us just feels like a tease.” Read his whole review on ANN.
