YNN_LissaYuri Manga

Kita Konno’s Onna no ko no Sekkeizu came out last month from Hirari comics. I apparently forgot to tell you. ^_^;

Comic Yuri Hime July 2013 issue (コミック百合姫) is up for preorder. Also from Comic Yuri Hime,  “Yuri novel” is Amai Yubisaki (あまいゆびさき), by Takagi Ayako, with illustrations by Rokuichi.

“Homosexual love is a demerit!” begins the teaser for a new series, Loveliest Treasoner. (ラブリストリズナー). (Many, many thanks to YNN correspondant Jamie Lynn for going to a bookstore and uncloaking the English title for me. I was totally stumped! That’s above and beyond, Jaimie!) Anyway, it’s running in Mangatime Kirara Miracle, another of the 7835 Mangatime Kirara books. It takes place  in a girls’ school where there is a written policy against same-sex relationships, so of course, Yuri.

Leia Weathington gives us a sneek peak at some of the roughs for her Bold Riley Volume 2 cover.

From Comic Natalie, an upcoming issue of Margaret magazine will have a new, original, Rose of Versailles manga supplement. It will follow Andre .

Also from Comic Natalie, news of something you have to see to believe (or indeed, comprehend) – A Yuno – from Hidmari Sketch – ring.

Miscellaneous Extremely Important Things You Should Not Miss

Comic Natalie reports that Japanese Fashion Magazine TokyoViVi, Volume 3 includes Sailor Moon‘s Usagi and Chibi-Usa in a “fashion shoot.”

Yesterday on Twitter, Japanese novelist Mori Natusko (several of whose books I have reviewed here) mentioned that a current NHK drama Amachan took a turn for the Yuri as main character Haruko falls for a pretty girl. She was so surprised, she said, that she stopped raising her mug to her mouth and it just hung there midair, as she watched. ^_^

My WSM hero, John Scalzi, has written another fabulous post on How to Be a Good Fan, which discusses what makes a fan a fan and not just a consumer.

Josh Lesnick (creator of Girly), has a new webcomic that does not suck. No pun intended, although pretty unavoidable with the title being You Suck about a succubus and the horny, yet clueless, girl she falls for….

Tamako Market’s newest novel comes with an augmented reality cover. Honestly, this is the first use of AR that makes some sense to me. ^_^

Yuri Anime

Funimation will be streaming A Certain Scientific Railgun S, so it’ll be free, with region restrictions. It begins April 14th – that’d be tomorrow. Better clear your schedule, Bruce McF! ^_^

Crunchyroll has picked up Yuyushiki, a story about a bunch of girls in the data processing club. Yeah, it sounds like every other 4-koma and it has some Yuri-service I presume, since it’s been on the Japanese Yuri blogs since day one (but with pretty low Yuri scores, which is why I presume its service or implication only.)

Brand-new YNN Correspondent Vivi C wants you all to know that Attack on Titan, “has a Yuri character called Ymir and the official website pretty much confirms that she is in love with another girl called Christa . …I don’t know if they’ll play such a big role in the anime. Putting the Yuri aside, I think the story’s pretty fantastic and worth taking a look at :D” Well, who could say no to that? Attack on Titan is streaming (legally, for free, with region restrictions) on Funimation’s website.

The Nozomi/RightStuf release of Tezuka’s classic, Part 1 of Princess Knight is up for pre-order and will make it’s debut on June 4th.

Yuri Manga

From YNN Correspondent tanbishugi on Twitter, German Yuri fans have something new to look forward to, as Takahashi Itsumi’s Yuri Pirates  manga, Love Flag *Girls has been picked up by EMA and is scheduled for a summer release.

Amano Shuninta’s Yuri Manga: Watashi no Sekai o Kousei Suru Chiri no You na Nanika (私の世界を構成する塵のような何か), Volume 2 streets next week. Given how much I have sitting here, I’ll get to it sometime in July. Waaah~ I wanna read it *now*!

I know I’ve told you this before, but Fu~Fu, Volume 2 (ふ~ふ) is also coming out next week. ^_^

*2* new books by Morishima Akiko are on the way – Hajimete, Kanojou to. (はじめて、彼女と。) and Onna no ko Awase (女の子合わせ).

But wait, there’s more, Material Candy (マテリアルキャンディ) by Kurokiri Misao, and Ookita Hiroko’s  Tsuki to Supon (月と泥 ) are slated for May releases.

The second volume of Morinaga Milk’s Himitsu no Recipe (ひみつのレシピ)  and Hakamada Mera’s Eden no Higashitotsuka (エデンの東戸塚) will hit shelves in May, as well.

YNN_LissaYuri Anime

Via YNN Correspondent Jst and several others,  ANN Reports that a 3rd Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha movie has been greenlit, but that it is not going to be a StrikerS reboot. The movie, Reflection, will have a new story not based on previous material.  In retrospect I am pleased about that. Unlike the first two series, StrikerS was a fully-formed story that was given plenty of time to develop. A movie of it would not add to the story and might well take away key plot and character development. On the other hand, I’m betting this is just an excuse to pander more to the lolicon audience in Japan, who has shown themselves ready to mortgage their lives to buy this stuff. I hope I’m wrong and they’ll give us grown-up Fate and Nanoha, but I’m not betting money on it.

YNN Correspondent Eric P and others want us to know that, as promised, Ikuhara Kunihiko has unveiled his new anime project, Yuri Kuma Arashi. It’s about a bear that turns into a girl  – in, I would imagine, a surreal animation sequence. Well we don’t know much yet, but we know it’ll be worth taking a look at, anyway. ^_^

More special episodes on the way for Saki Achiga Hen – look for them to stream Episodes 15 and 16 in May. Episode up to 14 are already available for free, legally, with some potential regional restrictions on Crunchyroll.

Japan is getting geared up for the Japanese release of My Little Pony~Tomodachi ha Mahou, with news that HKT48 will be singing the ending theme and an upcoming manga in Pucchigumi magazine.

Yuri Manga

PreFure -Precious Friend – (プレフ) is a schoolgirl like story about friends, much like other school girls friends stories, so some fans see Yuri. At least one Japnese blog says this is really Yuri. I have no idea if that’s true or not. ^_^

Transistor Tea Set (トランジスタティーセット ~電気街路図~) has made it to Volume 5, but I’ll never be able to love it again, unless I get a headless robot maid once more.

Yuri Network News (百合ネットワークニュース) – March 23, 2013

March 23rd, 2013

YNN_MariKIt’s a hodgepodge kinda week.

Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari, Volume 10 (ピュア百合アンソロジー ひらり、 vol.10) hits shelves the end of this month. For the first time probably ever, I like the cover art.

Morinaga Milk’s new series Gakuen Polize (which Ipresume is at least loosely based on an old doujinshi series she drew) is also a March release. Since my Amazon JP order isn’t going to get here for 2 months due to bundling, some of you will read it before me. If you’re interested in a Guest Review, drop me a line!

Adachi to Shimamura (安達としまむら) is a Light Novel that has food and Yuri. I’m there. ^_^ (Thanks to tsuki and kei for the name correction!)

YuriTetsu ~ Shiritsu Yurigasaku Joshikou Tetsudobu (ゆりてつ~私立百合ヶ咲女子高鉄道部) looks vile and it’s from GX Comics,  which pretty much guarantees it’s vile, but it does appear to be about  schoolgirls  who are train enthusiasts…and and it may have Yuri. (Volume 1 | Volume 2 | Volume 3)   Bruce, if you do get it, you *will* write a review… ^_^

If you’re looking for a legit e-manga site now that JManga is gone, Manga Reborn is still around and is looking darn good. Many of the manga they have up are free to read. Please bear in mind that if you do pay  – you are paying for the ability to read and enjoy the content on the site, like Netflix or Amazon streaming services.  Like JManga, they have a number of obscure titles and there are some titles that you may be familiar with. They also encourage readers to become translators and editors, so you can roll up your sleeves and get things done the way you want to. Manga Reborn is a legit site – I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the folks who are running it and talking with them. Because some of what they have is also available in English print, you can read, say, the first chapter of Sakuran before you decide to give Vertical Publishing your money (which you should totally do, because it was an amazing manga.) At the moment, they don’t have any Yuri, but that’s subject to change.

Speaking of not Yuri, there are two manga you need to be reading and, while neither are Yuri, that’s just no excuse. ^_^

Moto Hagio’s Heart of Thomas, which is as central to the origin of BL as Shiroi Heya no Futari is to Yuri, has been put out by Fantagraphics (the same company that’s putting out those gorgeous volumes of Wandering Son). It’s a must-read shoujo classic. I’m thrilled we all have the chance to read this in English at last.

Completely different, but no less amazing, Yen Press has given the hardcover treatment to Yamazaki Mari’s wackadoodle classic, Thermae Romae. If you haven’t heard of this one, let me editorialize by saying this is the most bizarre historical  manga you will ever read. An architect from ancient Rome is sucked into the bath and finds himself in modern Japan, where he picks up ideas about bath design, bathing and bath culture, which he brings back to ancient Rome. It’s an absolutely fantastic series that I’ve been following in Japanese for a while now.

The commercial for the continuation of To Aru no Kagaku no Railgun  is live on ANN. Check it out. The “Sisters’ arc in the manga has little sign of Kuroko or the others, but it looks like the anime will make sure they all get a chance to appear.

And TWO awesome history lessons this week: The first, from Jason Thompson on ANN, a Quick and Dirty History of Manga in the US, and on MTV Geek, Sean Kleefeld’s Part 1 of Fanthropology, which looks at the origin of the concept of “Fandom”.  Both of these articles are fantastic reads.

YNN_LissaYuri Manga

The May issue of Comic Yuri Hime‘s (コミック百合姫) cover is festive, flowerful and has a kitten, to cover all bases.

The second volume of Amano-sensei’s Watashi no Sekai o Kousei Suru Chiri no You na Nanika (私の世界を構成する塵のような何か) with more compelling stories of real lesbian relationships hit shelves  mid-April.

Also streeting in April are the second and final volume of Fu~Fu (ふ~ふ) with an utterly goofy-grin making ending,  Kazuma Kowo’s Namae ha Mada nai (名前はまだない) and the second volume of Kimono Nadesico (きものなでしこ).

From Tsubomi Comics, April sees the second volume of Kami-sama bakari Koi o suru (神さまばかり恋をする)

And from Hirari magazine, April sees the debut of Koubai no Procyon (購買のプロキオン).

Kodansha USA has donated books to libraries trying to rebuild in the Far Rockaways in New York. I’d love to see more publishers based in New York follow suit.

Shimua Takako’s masterwork, Wandering Son, Volume 5 is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Bodacious Space Pirate film project now has a February release date and some spiffy new designs. Check out ANN’s article for both.

Last up, we have a very exciting and challenging contest coming up tomorrow, so tune back in!
