Yuri Network News – February 19, 2011

February 19th, 2011

Every week, as I type up a YNN report, I’m reminded just how fast time goes. It’s already mid-February!

Yuri Manga

Our top story this week is from YNN Correspondent Jennifer M. French publisher Taifu has released the first chapter of their French-language edition of GIRL FRIENDS by Morinaga Milk as an online preview. Go take a look, even if you don’t read French. And if you do, please support Taifu as they takes they first steps into the Yuri market!

This past Valentine’s Day, LGBT Comics Consortium Prism Comics was kind enough to feature our own Rica ‘tte Kanji!? for a review.

ALC Publishing

Speaking of Rica,  I would like do a special shout-out today to Komatsu-san. Because of him, our ALC Publishing manga is going to become part of the permanent collection at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Komatsu-san is a valuable member of our staff and a good friend. And a really nice guy! ^_^ Thank you so much for all your support.

Right now, all of us at ALC are working hard on the new Rica ‘tte Kanji!? Omnibus. ^_^ Along with the original chapters, and the “More Rica” chapters from Yuri Monogatari, we’ve got a previously unpublished story and some brand new work from Rica. It’s going to be amazing!

Yuri Radio

In Japan, Simoun has kicked back into life, as the Emotion The Best Simoun box set edition hits the shelves. To help promote that, there is a new Simoun Radio show, Simoun Electric Wave DE Remersion.

Other News

Director of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Ikuhara Kunihiko, has announced that he will be directing a new TV anime this year. He was notably involved in the creation of the opening sequence of Aoi Hana in 2009. The only details he’s given about the anime so far as that it will star a high school girl – a piece of information that actually made me laugh out loud. It instantly reminded me of this Dilbert comic.

Yuri Anime

Subaru and Gainax have uploaded English subtitled episodes of their 4-part short collaboration Houkago no Preadesu  (放課後のプレアデス) with the name Wish Upon the Pleiades.  For some reason, it seemed kind of sweet that they did that. Thanks, Subaru and Gainax!

I’ve been making a terrible assumption here and I want to apologize. I am assuming you’re all watching Hourou Musuko: Wandering Son on Crunchyroll. I think you definitely *should* be watching this, especially if you are a fan of Aoi Hana. This is Shimura Takako’s other currently running series. The anime is as beautiful, sensitive and bitter/sweet as Aoi Hana was. A review will be forthcoming.

In Japan, a new Ikkitousen Blu-Ray box set is on sale. Now you can see Ryoumou’s underwear with the high-definition and detail you’ve always craved.

Speaking of underwear, Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny is now available on Crunchyroll and following that train of thought, so is Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit. While Moribito is in no way Yuri (or anything remotely like Ikkitousen, except for “woman who kicks ass”) I really cannot express how stellar Moribito is, in every way. It still maintains my vote for “Best Anime Series I Have Ever Watched – Ever.” If you have not yet had a chance to see it, and are not locked out by regional licensing nonsense, then please don’t miss your opportunity now.

Yuri Manga

The second volume of Nobara no Mori no Otome-tachi will be out in March. Yay!

Snatches of Yuri

MangaTime Kirara is pounding out a few series of note in the next few months: Yuyu Shiki , Volume 3;  Onegai Kami-sama; and Mashimaru and Taifun, all have some Yuri according to people who are not me and have different standards than I do, so your mileage may vary.

Also of note, but also caveat emptor is Yasashi Kyoshi Shitsukeru, which is an ero-story about a teacher who doesn’t much like kids. The cover and title are enough to turn me off, but as I say, YMMV.

Yuri Game

YNN Correspondent Mara sent this tidbit to us through the Yuricon Mailing List:

Koihime Muso‘s approximate release date is the 28th of February right now due to testing issues. As it had not been mentioned here I just thought I’d make sure it is up on this list for two main reasons.

First of all although the game will be the first game (the worst) and of all the Koihime Muso media this has the least Yuri, it is not as if it has none. Just look at the post on Toutaku’s army.

Also because the cost outweighs the current predicted sales Koihime Muso will also be released without voices. However if you look at this post: Should sales reach over 2000 the voices will be included, and a patch released for people who have bought it already. Well yay!

So if you do like Koihime Muso you might want to think about picking it up on release date as we need as high sales as possible to have a chance at getting the voices.

Should it fail just do what I’m planning on: Set up a laptop with the Japanese copy running next to where you are playing and play both simultaneously and identically so you can hear the voice acting from the Japanese version.

Won’t be the first time I did something that pathetic.

(You’re not alone, Mara- we’ve all done something equally as pathetic to feed our need.)

Yuri Manga

The first volume of Mikuni Hachime’s current Yuri Hime series, Musou Honey hit the streets last month – folks who loved Gokujo Drops should consider picking this one up.

Japanese Yuri lists are ringing with Kanno Manami’s Himawari-san from MF Comics. Love in a bookstore…swoon.

Time to pony up for the newly renamed Yuri Hime Wildrose – the first volume of Girls Love comes out this month! (Most pressing topic of conversation on the Yuri blogs regarding this is the lack of an apostrophe in “Girls.” I love otaku with all my heart, truly.

This one is for Bruce – Tetsudo Shoujo Manga, It’s train, it’s girls, it’s Yuri!

Yuri Anime

Update: YNN Correspondent Komatsu-san reminds me that Suite Precure!♪ begins broadcasting in Japan today. The main characters appear to be frenemies, which could certainly mean some Yuri potential.

Yuri Anime

Here is a trailer for the Morita-san ha Muguchi (森田さんは無口) OVA that is being bundled with the third manga volume. The OVA looks Yuri-er than the manga, but seems just as fun overall. For an overview of the story, check out my reviews of Volume 1 and Volume 2.

This was unexpected and happy-making – Digimon Tamers has been made available by Toei on Hulu.com. At last, I get to refresh my Ruki/Renamon fixation! Still want it on DVD, though… But for the first time ever, I may well try out Hulu. I’m actually pretty excited about this news. I loved Digimon Tamers. It was an amazingly good series, even aside from Ruki being a big ole babydyke. Oh screw it – squee!

Yuri Manga

The tops stories here were already broken this week, but to recap:

Vertical has announced that they are publishing Princess Knight, Ribon no Kishi (リボンの騎士)apparently under some pressure from the Tezuka folks. Good for them.

And this week saw the release date for the second (middle) Volume of GUNJO. In reply to my congratulations on Twitter, Nakamura-sensei replied that all that was left was the final volume, phew! She promises to keep working hard.

You may remember Gakkou no Sensei, a story about three young teachers and their wacky adventures being pretty bad at their job. Volume 3 is out and the Japanese Yuri lists have upped the Yuri rating. That means fairly little, speaking from my subjective view, but it was a slightly fun manga with some Yuri-ish bits.

And in all honesty, this has to be the seriously weirdest news so far this year – with the popularity of Gantz, and the big global movie release last week, Oku’s first big series is making a comeback. Yes, folks HEN is back in bunko versions, being published by Shueisha. This series is of interest to Yuri fans, BL fans and people who can stand the way Oku draws ears. I reviewed this series ages ago, way back when it was one of the few Yuri series we actually had. Here’s my review  of the Hen anime and manga (from almost *7* years ago! That’s positively stone-age.)

Yuri Drama CD

Man, you can always tell it’s mid-winter, when the Drama CD news comes pouring in….

You may remember that there is a new Hayate x Blade Drama CD –  Hayate x Blade Ultra Drama CD! Ichiban Hoshi! Zekkyoutsumeawase! that was released last month. Well, it was two of three being released in three months. The second of the set,  Hayate x Blade Ultra Drama CD Niban Hoshi! Tokkun Tsumeawase! was released this week. A third CD will be slamming your pocket next month, too. I haven’t gotten to listen to the first one, because the mini-CD that came with the last volume has been *so* insane and funny that I’ve had to listen to it three times so far. Review will happen eventually, when I stop laughing.

Yuri Manga

YNN Correspondent Bertie L wants you to know that the second (middle) volume of GUNJO is hitting the streets on January 28th. I saw the cover and tears sprung to my eyes. No fooling.

The first Omnibus of Card Captor Sakura is finally, almost reluctantly, making its way to people. If you have never read this charming shoujo series  by CLAMP, I really hope you’ll take this opportunity to do so. Tomoyo was a Yuri poster child for many years, before we had the glut of Yuri characters we have now. CCS captures most of the best of CLAMP’s skill at artistry. If you like Tsubasa: RESERVoir Chronicle, it’s also nice to see the origin of two of the major characters before they were completely reimagined by their creators.

Yuri Anime

Anime licensing firm Plus Licens has just inked a deal that will bring the Sailor Moon anime back to the Nordic countries, Eastern and Central Europe. The deal includes TV and DVD rights. In other news Kodansha USA sent back a recording of crickets when asked about the possibility of a US revival. No, not really, I’m joking. I know that Kodansha USA is actually working on stuff here – just not that. (Back channel info, you’ll have to trust me.)

Other News

Many of you have probably heard about the devastating floods in Australia. To raise money for some victims, a number of people on LiveJournal have decided to do ad hoc auctions of anime and manga related goods. I received an email about this, which I thought I would share with you. Before you join any auction, please be responsible and read what they are doing, decide if you want to go this route, or donate through a major charity.

Just a heads up for folks who are unaware of the flooding – the affected area is the size of France and Germany combined. Think about it for a second.

Here’s the news and links YNN Correspondent Socchan sent us:

There’s a good three fandom-centric auction-style-things open on LiveJournal to help raise funds for Queensland, Australia, which is undergoing some severe flooding right now. Offers are anything from fanfic to vids to plush dolls to homemade soap and beyond, with a wide range of fandoms. There’s no “organized by fandom” list yet that I know of, so anyone interested would have to do a bit of digging, but there’s a number of people offering something for any fandom or specific fandoms, with or without actual Yuri. If anyone’s had a burning desire for something specific, Yuri-fandom-wise or similar, and wants to contribute to a good cause, this is a great opportunity. A lot of bids start as low as a dollar too, and offering is still open, so people strapped for cash (like me) can still contribute.

Auction locations/options:

* The community qldfloodauction, which has both a lightening round for more immediate donations and a regular round for longer-term projects up
* User waltzmatildah’s Flood Relief: Fic Fundraiser Challenge (focus on fic, but apparently open to other stuff?)
* Community owemebreakfast’s Queensland Flood Media Fundraiser (just graphics)

Yuri Event

If you’re going to be in or near Kyoto in March, drop by the 5th Girl’s Love Festival to nab yourself some Yuri Doujinshi.
