Yuri News Network – January 2, 2010

January 2nd, 2010

Woah….2010. Wow, does *that* feel weird. It’s been almost 10 years since I decided that world needed a community specifically for fans of Yuri that celebrated lesbian love and life, as opposed to lesbian porn. What a crazy, unbelievable decade it’s been, let me tell you!

I don’t know what 2010 will bring us, of course; whether we’ll be scraping the bottom of the barrel for our Yuri, or climbing to new heights. I do know that I *hope* to be able to hold a 2010 Yuricon event – but don’t expect a “con” as you know it. You must know by know that I encourage thoughtful discussion and critical thinking, but not running around the halls screaming. :-) Think Yuri-conference, rather than Yuri-convention.

There are a lot of things going on behind the curtains at Yuricon & ALC Publishing. Sometimes things we’re working on never make it to the light of day and so it looks like we’re going nowhere, but I promise you that that is not true. Right now we’re working on a long-overdue update for the Yuricon site. Because so many things have changed since we last redesigned it and because we’re trying to make the new site sustainable for some time to come, it’s not an overnight process. We just finished one contest (2009 AMVs) and will shortly be announcing a new one – one that will quite literally change the image of Yuricon. :-) And there are some other things I just can’t tell you about, although I wish I could. If, when, these projects come to fruition, you’ll know.

I do want to share this – today, to my shock, I learned that the founding of Yuricon made Afterellen’s Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. list. Of course I started to bawl immediately. I’ve received way more kicks than kudos in this past decade, so that, along with a number of other things recently, made me feel really good about starting off on another decade of trying my damndest to bring Yuri to America in a sustainable, intelligent and empowering way.

As I said, I don’t know what the next decade will bring – but if it’s as rewarding, frustrating, amazing and challenging as this last decade, it’s going to absolutely kick ass.

So Happy New Year my friends, my Yuri Network. Welcome to a whole new decade, just waiting to be filled with good thoughts, creative work, original ideas and Yuri love. :-)

Yuri Manga

The new year gets off to a thoroughly average start with announcement of a new franchise extender, Mai HiMe EXA. The manga has shifted out of Champion Red to Dengeki Daioh, so I might start picking it up again. Of course I’ll let you know what I think.

For those of you who like pink-cheeked women who bathe a lot, Cassiopeia Dolce, Volume 2 is just around the corner, and will hit the shelves on the 18th.

Also on the 18th, Ichinjinsha will release Yuru Yuri, Volume 2 and Konohanatei Kitan.

Comics212 reports that “The dude who does the fun and porny colour manga series MAKA MAKA and animation studio Madhouse have teamed up to do a full colour miniseries exclusive to America. That’s…pretty awesome. Apparently it involves a new take on vampires, wicked looking guns, and disaffected badasses. For people who like this sort of thing, this is the single best thing of the year.” Well put, Comics212, well put.

Yuri Anime

Not content with announcing a new TV series, Shin Koihime Musou also announces a new OVA which, like the previous OVA, is an alt-fic of this alternate universe.

***

Quiet week this week, but you have to expect that.

I’ll spend the next few days be catching up on some of the new anime that’s come out recently – reviews to come.

Thank you all for your support, your help and here’s wishing us all a great decade of Great Yuri!

Yuri Network News – December 26, 2009

December 26th, 2009

Last News post of the Year – freaky, huh? In Japan, everyone is gearing up for Winter Comiket and New Year’s. Here’s the news….

Yuri Anime

One of the oft-noted things about the Japanese anime market right now is that it is focusing more and more on small fetishes and off-center stuff, because the audiences there who like that kind of thing (like, say, giant breasts) are more likely to pay for anime when it’s targeted to them.

Hence, Sono Hanabira ni Kuchizuke o for which a brand new adult anime is being launched in 2010, based on the popular Yuri sex game. (And I find myself amused to note that even the Japanese fans on 2chan don’t want the same people who did Shoujo Sect to work on this. lol They are all very happy that the folks who made Strawberry Panic! the classic it is, are on the team.)

The economics of fetishism don’t hold for the western audience, though. High school and college age men who are the most likely to watch these anime are the statistically least likely to pay for them. So although Media Blasters has licensed Queen’s Blade here, I really wouldn’t expect them to do well with it. Perhaps it’s time for them to develop a streaming model too. Of course, I *hope* I’m wrong and that all of the fans of QB shell out enough money to make it a success, because I always hope that every licensed series is a success. :-)

Also coming up in 2010 is yet another fetishy series, the third series of Shin Koihime†Musou: Otome Tairan. If the first two seasons have done well on Crunchyroll, expect to see it there.

Will the non-fetishy Yuri audience get a new anime to enjoy? No news as of yet, but remember, we are heading into an even-numbered year and the likelihood seems low. Even the Yuri Hime editors are pulling for an anime of their most moe, least interesting series.

Yuri Manga

Speaking on Yuri Hime comics, Apple Daydream Volume 2 is available, as is Yuri Wildrose, Volume 4.

Yuri Anthology Comic Lily Volume 2 is slated to hit the virtual shelves some time this month.

Looking forward a little bit, Tsubomi Volume 5 will be out in February.

Snatches of Yuri

Otome Kakumei Ayame no! Light Novel Series takes place at a private girl’s school! It involves the school idol and memory loss! And it has Yuri!

And Harenochi Cinderella manga takes place private girl’s school! Involves the school idol and an average girl! And has Yuri!

Konohana is about a girl and her robot and has egregious ass and breast usage, from Champion Red, beloved by women-haters everywhere.

Other Yuri News

It’s my great pleasure to welcome the Lirica Cafe into our Yuri Network. Lirica is a Japanese doujinshi circle that emailed me recently and I have to tell you – I’m already impressed with their art! I look forward to learning more about them. Visit their site and let us know what you think. ^_^

That’s a wrap for this week.

Yuri Network News – December 19, 2009

December 19th, 2009

Just a quick personal note to start off – for the next month or so I’ll be working three jobs and, so, reviews may be sporadic, because this is a fourth job and even I have a breaking point. ;-) As a result, I am soliciting guest reviews – here are some basic guidelines for doing so.

What I’m looking for is reviews of series I will not review. I know that that’s asking you to be a bit clairvoyant and I apologize for that, but it’s not an impossible task. If you’ve read a Light Novel or manga series I’ve never mentioned, or watched an anime that has never popped up here then you’re looking at a good bet for a Guest Review. You can use the categories on the sidebar and the search at the top to see if the series in question might already be part of the blog. So, while I understand your interest in reviewing, say, Hayate x Blade, I’ll be handling that myself. :-)

Lastly – if this is a licensed series, then I would strongly prefer you not review based on scans, subs or rips you have downloaded. Write about the actual licensed item that you have bought, borrowed from friend or library or rented. Please. Thank you.

Now, onto some news!

Yuri Manga

Here’s something exciting! Morishima Akiko-sensei has been working on an Edo-period manga that is now out from Mangatime KR Comics, O-Edo tote Schön. You may remember that she had a period piece in her first collection of manga from Yuri Hime and it set her off on an interest in the period. I’m really looking forward to this, it ought to be fun.

For those of you who are enjoying Sora’s battles to save the girls of Utopia Academy, the second volume of Shitsurakuen 2 will be on sale in about a month. (This would be a great subject for a guest review, if you’ve bought and enjoyed the series!)

Last year I was saying that there would be no more Maria-sama ga Miteru novels, but you know, I was totally wrong. Yes, Yumi and the gang are no longer the main focus, but Konno-sensei is still cranking them out. Several of them have followed Yuuki and his adventures as a first-year at Hanadera (finally explaining what *really* went on with the island dance he had to learn) and I’m reading Little Horrors right now. Yumi and “our” Yamayurikai show up in the story that ties it all together, but are not the focus of the individual shorts. The point of saying all this is, there’s a new novel hitting the shelves on Dec. 25 – Maria-sama ga Miteru ~ Watashi no Su.

Yuri Anime

LexXxich points us in the direction of “Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor, which is a sequel of 2007 Darker than Black. Second season features Hazuki, nicknamed Lesbian Lightsaber Ninja, a contractor whose remuneration is kissing males. She does not like it one bit, going as far as to flush her mouth with vodka after the deed, and kissing her female assistant Kyouko to “remove a bad aftertaste”. She even tries to molest Kirihara, a (female) ex-cop working now in her agency. She’d just go down the drain as “another predatory lesbian”, if not for a disaster happening to Kyouko, during which it’s revealed that their feelings were mutual. Any more spoilers would be awful, so I stop here.”

Funimation has announced the English voice cast of the second season of the Strike Witches anime.

Snatches of Yuri

L16 volume 2 is about 16-year old Nanaka-chan who admires her beloved 28-year old onee-chan. (Real or symbolic sister, I don’t yet know.)

From the creator of Maka-Maka and Mars no Kiss comes a news series, i.d.. There’s not so much Yuri in this first volume, but Yuri Goggles will help with that, it seems. I’m probably more interested in this series because I found Mars no Kiss so sensitive and intelligent and was surprised at the delicacy of art and writing that were displayed in that volume.

Yuka-hime!, another Mangatime KR comic, sounds like Doki Doki School Hours with the main character being the class president, rather than the teacher. Absurdly short, large chested Yuka is cuddled and fondled by her adoring classmates. The standard Nadesico beauty of the class uses every opportunity to touch her, making for very Yumi/Sachiko, Himeko/Chikane photo ops. :-)

Other News

Egypt Today has posted an interview with Cutey Honey and Devilman Lady (among many other series) creator, Go Nagai.

Urushihara Satoshi has a new artbook out. If you have ever looked at any of his artwork, you’ll know what to expect – shiny girls, often naked, sometimes Yuri, overt or implied.

Yuri Network News – December 12, 2009

December 12th, 2009

The holiday season is in full force and buying is reaching frenzied heights – which I’m totally for. Let me see if I can help with some good suggestions for holiday gifts, shall I? ^_^

Yuricon News

The Yuricon 2009 AMV contest is heading into final hours. Please get those entries in soon! We have a fabulous art contest coming up so keep your eyes peeled!

The up-to-40% off sale on 100% Yuri from ALC is also coming to a close. Please get any orders in by Monday, Dec. 15 for Xmas shopping.

Yuri Anime

RightStuf & Nozomi Entertainment announce the ARIA The Origination Collection for March 2, 2010. The set will include the series’ third (and final) TV season, plus the OVA. For more info, downloads, extras and lots of pretty pictures, visit RightStuf’s Aria website.

Sasamekikoto is heading to the end of a successful first season and to celebrate there will be some contest-like thing you might want to know about. I didn’t mention this, you just *might* want to check back on Wednesday. Just sayin’.

No clue what the anime will be about, but Candy Boy‘s Hoshikawa Takafumi is working on a new, unnamed project, along with Seed Project.

I do not know if there is any intention of bringing this to the west, but in Japan, April will see R.O.D. The COMPLETE BluRay Box set. For this, I might *actually* be tempted to buy a BluRay player and a sound system, but it would probably all be wasted on my craptastic TV. :-) (The wife suggests I put all the components on my Yuri Wish List. lol)

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Movie The 1st two-minute trailer is streaming live and online for your pleasure. The movie is due out on January 23rd. I think it looks overall good, with some (sadly inevitable) creepiness.

Yuri Manga

While we’re on the topic, Digital Manga Publishing has licensed the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS manga and I should probably warn you that Yuri content in that is low to non-existent. If you like Nanoha for itself, it’s good. Don’t go reading it looking for Yuri, you’ll be disappointed.

It’s time for the next issue of Yuri Hime S, featuring “Konohana Link” on the cover and filled with a ton of stuff and even the occasional story about women who like one another. ;-) YHS will hit the streets on December 18.

Kono Koi ha XXX is an anthology of short, PWP stories with Yuri content and sex by an artist who formerly contributed to Yuri Shimai. So you know what you’re in for.

Hayate x Blade Volume 5 is out. I will review it as soon as I can. Trust me – it’s fabulous.

And Nijiburi has been on all the Japanese Yuri lists recently. I’m sure it is relevant to our interests, but I’ve hit the wall on large eyes for the morning. :-)

Yuri Light Novel

Light Novel Kimi ga Boku wo Doushite Sora ha Aoi no? sounds, gasp! interesting. In a shopping center that was formerly prosperous, a girl finds herself involved in working with (for? as?) a butler to an official, i.e., another girl. The story sounds half typical and half not so much. I might give it a try, just because it has to be better than the LN I’m trying to read right now.

Other News

From time to time I get requests for suggestions and recommendations for LGBT books. I don’t actually do recommendations of any kind, but I can provide links. I’ll try and do my best to add some good LGBT book links here from time to time. Since it is the holiday season and you may be looking for some LGBT lit other than manga to buy, here are a few sites that may be of interest to you:

GLBT Bookshelf

Bella Books

Bold Strokes Books

Alyson Books

Brisk Press

I hope you find something fun for the LGBTQ-friendly folks in your life. ^_^

Yuri Network News – December 5, 2009

December 5th, 2009

The end of the year draws nigh and I guess it’s time to start thinking about my Top Ten Lists. Number One will be easy but ugh, the rest is going to be hard – this year because we had a ton of good stuff to choose from. And here’s a few more titles, to complicate matters. :-)

Yuri Manga

Choir! was a horrible-looking comic strip that turned out to be totally tolerable, with moments of actual funny and a surprisingly genuine Yuri couple. Now there’s a second volume out.

I still haven’t had a chance to read it, but Japanese Yuri lists say that at least one of the stories in Nakamura Ching’s collection Chin-Man is Yuri.

***

Yuri Drama CD

YNN correspondent Katherine H. is glad to share the news that there is a *third* Saki original Drama CD in the works.

While we’re at it, I want to share the news that the Maria-sama ga Miteru Premium CD with original recording, is now available. Those of you who favor Yumi x Touko (by which I mean…Sean) will like the cover.

***

Yuri Anime

Moonphase announced that Mitsudomoe is going to become an anime. A single glace at the cover of the manga was enough for me. If you like the idea of fetuses in frilly dresses, and a vaguely sort of Yuri-ish feel then you’ll love this, I’m sure.

***

Snatches of Yuri

Akane-iro Symphonia – Ichijinsha’s *other* novel line has been putting out a few Yuri novels and this seems to be the latest. High school girls and desktop music, with Yuri.

Sakura Ricetto looks, well, Yuri with lots of service. Girls, bathing, Yuri. Yup.

Other News

Google has released a new Japanese IME for those of you who would like the ability to type in Japanese directly. If you do not read Japanese, it will not be a big help to you, but if you can type Romaji, it will. Like the Microsoft IME, it gives you choices for Hiragana, Kanji and Katakana when you type Romaji in. I like it so far, which is to say, for the twice I used it this morning. :-)

(IME is Input Method Editor, in case you were wondering. Read about them here.)
