Yuri Survey

Tania is currently working on a Survey of Yuri readership in Japan. Feel free to share her link to get more responses to her survey! She’s really hoping to get some significant numbers.

Of course I’d love to see the results of this survey and how they contrast with the responses to our own Global Yuri Fandom Survey here. The results of that were gratifying, but there’s a lot yet to be learned.

Yuri Manga in English

Yen Press announced a new license, Kiss The Scars Of The Girls, which is a vampire Yuri title. I have seen the cover, but not read it myself, for vampire reasons. ^_^

Seven Seas announced the license for How Do I Get Together With My Childhood Friend?, by Syu Yasaka, creator of Monologue Woven For You.

August will see the release of Yokohama Shopping Log Deluxe Edition, Volume 3. I’ll be reviewing Volume 2 of this brilliant and melancholy series next week.

Even Though We’re Adults, Volume 6 is on the way this month. I hope you’re all following this terrific series about complicated relationships.

Still playing catch-up on the Store, and have added MURCIÉLAGO, Volume 20! Amazingly, I am still reading this series.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady, Volume 3 manga is up and Annis and Euphie are about to take on a dragon!

Collaboration manga by Teren Mikami and Takeshima Eku, There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless…, Volume 1 is up. There is also a LN and I’ll work on getting that added, as well.

Yuri Manga in Japanese

Very exciting news – we’ll be getting Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna, Volume 4 (作りたい女と食べたい女) in just a few weeks. I cannot wait to see the collected volume for this. Creator Yuzaki Sakaomi was right on Pride Month with a charming image of Kasuga-san and Nomoto-san celebrating on Twitter. ^_^

Now that everyone has been enjoying the early days of the Yuri Is My Job! anime, we can emotionally prepare ourselves for the dramatic crisis that is Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto Desu!, Volume 12 (私の百合はお仕事です).

Watashi o Tabetai, Hito de Nashi, Volume 6 (私を喰べたい、ひとでなし) was reviewed this week on Okazu. Amazingly good creepy story.

Also hitting shelves this month is SHWD, Volume 3 (シュード) the final volume of this action story about large-muscular women fighting demons of the mind and body. Volume 2 will be out in English in February 2024.

Tamifull’s Tsukiatte Agetemo Iikana, Volume 10 (付き合ってあげてもいいかな) is out and I’m behind again. ^_^ How are Saeko and Miwa doing in their new relationships?

One of Ruriko’s acquaintances, Rio, has asked to stay – will her jealousy of Kurumi cause problems? Find out in Onna Tomodachi to Kekkonshitemita, Volume 3 (女ともだちと結婚してみた。)

Canno-sensei announced on Twitter a doujinshi call Shimai-tachi ga Watashi no koto wo Suki-sugiru! (妹たちが私のことを好きすぎる!) In English, “My Sisters Love Me!”

Via Comic Natalie, this feels very much like a throwback to olden days of Yuri. Houkenshitsu ha Futarikiri (保健室はふたりきり) is a series of trysts in a high-school medical office, by Rokoko.

Also from Comic Natalie, Yuri ni ha Kimaru Otoko ha Shinebaii!? (百合にはさまる男は死ねばいい!?) is a LINE manga about jealousy and desire in a school band.

Yuri VNs

Heart of the Woods has been a standout queer hit for Studio Élan. You can get it on multiple platforms. We’ve got it linked up on the Yuricon Store!

Aikasa Collective’s sapphic fairytale Red Rebellion has made it’s Kickstarter goal and is in development. You can play the demo on itch.io and wishlist on Steam!

The next entry in the Blue Reflection franchise launched this past February. Blue Reflection Sun isn’t yet subbed for English-language but if you’re motivated it looks quite pretty.

Other News

I was buzzing around the Internets when I encountered this utterly delightful-sounding comic, The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich.  A fairy tale with the tagline “love should be cheesy” and a funny sapphic story, I thought I’d bring it to everyone’s attention here since we all deserve a happily-ever-after.

The Sound! Euphonium franchise is moving into another season with the Ensemble Contest arc. Even I can see that money was spent on this season – they have noses. Egan Loo has the details on ANN.

I would like to end today’s report with a wholehearted recommendation for YA readers of any age who like to science fiction. My publisher at Journey Press has written a fantastic, queer, science fiction trilogy called The Kitra Saga. The third book, Hyvilma, has just been released as an e-book. These would make great beach reading – I read the first book and thought it fantastic. The second is on my to-read pile. You know I’ll be reading Hyvilma as soon as I can.

Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – May 27, 2023

May 27th, 2023

In blue silhouette, two women face each other. One wears a fedora and male-styled attire, one is in a dress and heels. Their body language is obscure - they may be dancing, or laughing or fighting. Now that I am making a concerted effort to catch up on the Yuricon Store, there are two things we must reckon with: 1) There will be a lot of additions in this week’s report and 2) There is SO MUCH Yuri coming out that, a week into the update, I have added as many items to my “to be added” list in my bookmarks as I have added things to the Store. ^_^; We are surrounded by an abundance of Yuri riches. So buckle in, we have a lot of cool stuff this week to get to!

Yuri Anime

The Lycoris Recoil Blu-Ray box set will be available in late August. It looks adorable. Save %30 with a pre-order on RightStuf.

Yuri Figurines

From the fine folks at Yuri Daily on Facebook, we have the news that Furyu is putting out two Yuri Is My Job! figurines. You can get our leads in their salon personas – Ayanokoji Mitsuki or Shirasagi Hime for about $130 USD each. These figurines are eerily life-like-to-the-anime.

Yuri Manga

Seven Seas announced the license of How Do I Get Together With My Childhood Friend?, by the creator of Monologue Woven For You, Syu Yasaka.

How Do We Relationship?, Volume  9 will be hitting shelves in late July. Miwa and Saeko’s relationship has gone through a lot, but they are still finding their best ways to be themselves.

Chasing After Aoi Koshiba, Volume 4 gave us an unexpected ending to the series. I reviewed it yesterday here on Okazu.

Superwomen in Love! Honey Trap and Rapid Rabbit, Volume 5 also completes this sentai Yuri series. Can a suited heroine and her arch-nemesis save the day?

From Blue Drop creator Akihito Yoshitomo My Future Starts Today ~Miku & Kyoko~, Volume 1 was picked up and translated into English by MediBang! as a digital license. Does anyone remember Blue Drop besides me, at this point? I liked it – especially the Drama CDs.

Qualia The Purple Manga Collection is now available on the Store, as well. Without question, the people who loved this story, love this story. I mean that in a kind way.

Galette, No. 25  (ガレット) has been out since March and is available from a number of sellers. I am still positive about this creator-run quarterly Yuri manga magazine and would love to see it continue for 5 more years!

Akiyama Haru’s Iberis no Hanayome ( イベリスの花嫁) is about a wedding planner who finds herself falling for the bride.

Lily & Ivy – Ken-couple Yuri & Sex Anthology (リリー&アイビー ~ケンカップル百合×性愛アンソロジー~) is for fans of series like Black & White, with a little rough love in the mix.

Fukusuunin Kousai Yuri Anthology (複数人交際百合アンソロジー レモネード) is a poly anthology, with relationships of 3 or more people.

Yuri Short Story Collection wiz (百合小説コレクション wiz) is a collection of winning entries from the Yuri Literary Short Story Contest on Pixiv.

Nagata Kabi has more to say about her life in Suizou Ga Kowaretara, Sukoshi Ikiyasuku Narimashita. (膵臓がこわれたら、少し生きやすくなりました。) I’m reading it now and will get back to you shortly.

I’m In Love With The Villainess News

Crunchyroll has announced that they will be streaming the I’m In Love With The Villainess anime, which is headed our way in October. Rafael Antonio Pineda has the details over on ANN.

On her Pixiv Fanbox last week, inori.-sensei announced a new spin-off project I’m In Love With The Villainess. Maid’s Kitchen (私の推しは悪役令嬢。メイドキッチン) The art for this cooking comedy starring Rei, Claire and Lene, will be by Tsuke-sensei. It will also run in Comic Yuri Hime magazine. Take a look at the cover here on inori.-sensei’s twitter!

There are two more voiced comics for Wataoshi from Ichijinsha. You can find there here and here. That completes the series, I believe.

Zerogo: Yuri Literary Magazine (零合 : 百合総合文芸誌) with cover art by Shimura Takako-sensei is definitely part of a trend of one-volume Yuri fiction collections  in Japan.

Odoriba ni Skirt ga Naru, Volume 3 (踊り場にスカートが鳴る) is the ongoing saga of two girls finding themselves through ballroom dancing.

Natsu To Lemon To Overlay  (夏とレモンとオーバーレイ) had a great idea and had a pleasant ending.

Hero-san to Moto Onna Kanbu-san, Volume 5 (ヒーローさんと元女幹部さん) continues sometime’s sentai Yuri love story.

Sal Jiang’s Ayaka-chan ha Hiroko-sempai ni Koi Shiteru, Volume 3 (彩香ちゃんは弘子先輩に恋して) is up on the store and in my to-read box! Yuri Anime

Also on the Yuricon Store, we have the If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die Blu-ray set! I honestly think the anime fixed a lot of the problems with the early volumes of the manga and was pretty good. ^_^

It lives! I’m In Love With the Villainess will be premiering in October 2023! Check out the trailer on Youtube.  Crystalyn Hogkins has details of casting over on ANN. My only benchmark for this anime is whether or not it keeps the lunch conversation about Rae being gay or not. ^_^

Also premiering in October is Hoshikuzu Telepath, a Mangataime Kirara series. I guess I should get around to reading the manga before it hits. ^_^

ANN’s Kim Morrissy notes that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury has assisted the Gundam franchise to record-breaking revenue, including sales of the Aerial figurines. I’m gonna to say – with tongue firmly in cheek – that I bet Birdie Wing helped too, by reminding a bunch of those of old golf-playing dudes in Japan of the Gundam franchise they loved in the youth. ^_^

Queer Comics

LSBN is a lesbian mech rom-com graphic novel by Ignatz and Prism Award-winning cartoonist Emma Jayne with coloring by Sloane Leong. It looks great and is on pre-order now! This seems totally up our alley here on Okazu. ^_^

Yuri Manga

Clearing out some items of interest from Comic Natalie, today. ^_^

Mizutani Fuuka, creator of the popular school romance story, Love at Fourteen, has a spin-off of the series, Reliance (リライアンス). This story is about Aoi, the student who fell for Hajima-sensei, told from the perspective of another classmate, Tachibana.

Takane-san and Arashi-chan (高音さんと嵐ちゃん) is a story about two second-years in high school. Their relationship seems to lack nuance, but the story doesn’t look unpleasant. Volume 1 of this full-color Yuri manga is out in Japan, or check the sample pages over on Bookwalker and see if it interests you.

A! Yasei no Ojou-sama ga Tobidashitekita!! (あ! 野生のお嬢様がとびだしてきた!!) also looks to have some potential, although in an off-beat manner. In a old-fashioned school for young ladies the Student Council is the Lily Cross Society. Sumire, a first-year joins, only to find that the LCS is involved in a bus accident in the mountains. Can the remaining members survive? Volume 1 is collected, Volume 2 will be released in June and, again, there are sample pages on Bookwalker.

If Itou Hachi is your bag, they have combined their favorite fetishes of animal-eared girls, ane-loli and Yuri again in a new series Inari no Kekkon (いなりの結婚) running now on Web Action.

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda has the news that several of the major Japanese art/content sites are banning AI art. DLsite, Ci-en, pixiv FANBOX, Fantia have all taken a stand against people using AI to create revenue streams on their sites.

Sr. YNN Corespondent Sean G notes that From Introvert Cringe to Yuri Harem—Watamote Turns 10, by Norbert Daniels, Jr. on ANN might appeal to those some folks, although he notes that the Yuri is more obvious in the manga after the anime ended. I’ll take his word on it.

Still catching up on the Yuricon Store, but here’s a start. Definitely don’t miss the concluding volumes of two of my favorite Yuri manga! Catch These Hands, Volume 4 brings this charming dysfunctional adult series to an end.

For folks looking for sensitive and caring aro/ace representation, I hope you all picked up Doughnuts Under A Crescent Moon, Volume 4, because that series really nailed the ending.

And for once I am pre-emptively declaring a birthday celebration for myself. The Moon On A Rainy Night, Volume 1 comes out in English from Kodansha on my birthday and I want you all to read it and write in the comments of my review of it what you think! I’m reading Volume 4 now in Japanese and it’s just so good.

Arai Sumiko’s Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta (気になってる人が男じゃなかった) hit shelves last month in Japan. This manga got it’s start on Twitter and became very popular quickly. It’s about a woman who mistakes another woman for a guy and falls for “him.”

Via YuriMother, we have news that Run Away With Me Girl, Volume 3 has hit shelves this month.

And for those of you interested in There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless…, Volume 1, the collaboration between Teren Mikami and Eku Takeshima, Sean Gaffney has reviewed it and noted the possibly problematic bits for you.

In case you missed this, ANN’s Margaux Pangilinan took a look at Advice and More From the TATESC Award Winning Author of LILIES, one of the first Bookwalker vertical-scroll comics.

Sailor Moon News

I’m sure everyone has had a chance to watch this, but if you haven’t, be frustrated by the gorgeous Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer, which means that Toei made the exact same mistakes this time that they did the first time around – cheaping out and rushing the first two seasons, with not-great directors, then having a decent director and a teeny more money for Season 3, then spending a ton of money on Seasons 4 and 5. Maddening, isn’t it?  ^_^;
