At long last, Japan is going to open borders to independent travelers. No visas, no booking with travel agencies, no pre- and post-travel testing. Masks are still required for most places and, frankly, I cannot understand how anyone is doing anything without masking around other people. Alex Mateo has the news over at ANN. I’m going to hope to visit next autumn, once again.

Yuri Event

Rica Takashima and I will be at Women in Comics at the Bronx Library Center on October 29! If you missed us at FlameCon, here’s your chance! The link shows last year’s info. I’ll give you more details as I get them.

I will be at AnimeNYC, November 16-18 in New York City, with a table in the Artist’s Alley, as well as doing a few panels. I’ll be signing copies of By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga and I’ll have some of the Yuri from ALC Publishing with me, and bookplates, pins and stickers for you to proclaim your love of Yuri.  Definitely drop by to say hello – it’s been a very long time since I have tabled and would love the company. ^_^ If you’re going to be there are would like to help out, drop me a line.

Not Yuri specifically, but I want to share Manga in Libraries tweet that they will be hosting three panels at New York Comic Con, October 6-9! Camp out in the room with us and let’s talk manga all day. ^_^

Yuri Manga

How about Akuyaku Rejiou ga Sei-Heroin o Kudokiotosu Hanashi. (悪役令嬢が正ヒロインを口説き落とす話。) in which a villainess tries to seduce the heroine, who is beloved for her wisdom and cuteness? Sure, why not. ^_^

Yuri Games and VNs

Via YNN Correspondent Cryssoberyl, who wants you to know about GrimGrimoire Once More, for PS4, PS5 and Switch. Cryssoberyl says, “Important yuri game news. This is an updated remaster of the 2007 release, which features a canon yuri romance as part of its main story.” Check out the trailer on Youtube.

Via YNN Corespondent Xan, we learn that Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life will have queer romance options and the ability to play as a non-binary character.

Also via Cryssoberyl, SUCCESS Corporation has announced the HD remastering of classic Yuri VNs Akai Ito and Aoi Shiro for Switch and Steam! These both came out in the early 00s just before the big Yuri boom. In 2009, Mara reviewed Aoi Shiro for us here on Okazu!

I’m currently reading Queer Transfigurations: Boy’s Love Media in Asia, edited by our good friend James Welker. As you know, BL isn’t my area of study, but fandom is of significant interest to me, and I am interested in the parallels and differences in BL and Yuri fandoms. Reading about how different BL fandoms react to real-world LGBTQ issues is interesting, and I have a lot of thoughts about the many ways that “gatekeeping” manifests…some protective, some exclusive. I’m freer than most scholars as I write here on topics of interest to me because I can have an opinion as well as just quoting other people’s opinions. In a lot of ways, I think it gives me the ability to recognize more nuance, since I’m not confined to one specific focus. Maybe. We’ll see where this book takes me. ^_^ It’s been honestly interesting so far, so if you are interested in BL, I give this one a thumbs up.

Yuri Events

My autumn schedule is filling up. I’m very excited to be part of so many great events in the next few months. These are all NYC-based. If you’d like me at your local event, school or organization, tell them to invite me. ^_^ I can be reached through the Yuricon Contact Form.

October 24 – Hunter College, NYC. I’ll be talking about Yuri and the manga industry.

October 29  – Women in Comics Con, Bronx Library Center, NYC. This event is open to the public with a focus on teens and younger readers of comics. Details TBA.

AnimeNYC, Nov 18-20, NYC. I’m on two panels, Defending Manga in Libraries and Writing About Japan and will be signing books! Details TBA. I’ll be at this event all weekend, so check back for my full schedule.

The next Girls Love Fest will be held on November 11, 2022, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Trade Center in Asakusa. I liked that location, it’s right near the Senso-ji. ^_^

Comitia 142 will be held on November 27, 2022 at Big Sight in Tokyo. I’m really hoping to get there for next year’s November Comitia.

Yuri Manga

Seven Seas has licensed an 18+ title from Comic Yuri Hime, Does It Count If You Lose Your Virginity To An Android? By Yakinikuteishoku, this manga is about a woman and her android housekeeper having sex. I am going to be a little salty here about equating “android” with “robot,” in their description, because Seven Seas does that with Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou as well and I find it an odd choice.

Via YNN Correspondent Scarlet Queen, Mahô Éditions has announced the French-language Roll Over and Die manga on their Twitter feed. Check out the announcement for a fantastic trailer for the series.

Yuri Novel

Komatsu-san on Crunchyroll reports that the Lycoris Recoil spin-off novel passed 100,000 sales, before it was released yesterday in Japan. According to Komatsu-san, the novel includes scenes that weren’t in the anime. Check his article for images and more information!

Yuri Live-Action

Komatsu-san also has the scoop on the cast and key visual for the live-action Oshi ga Budokan Ittekuretara Shinu (If My Favorite Idol Made It To The Budokan I would Die.) The casting looks great.

Yuri Doujinshi

Yuni, creator of I Love You So Much, I Hate You, (which is available from Yen Press) has a new doujinshi from this month’s Comitia. Because Comitia is for original work, it gets a lot of good original doujinshi…which I why I always include it under Yuri events!) You can buy FAKE IT, and tons of other doujinshi on Melonbooks, through a buying service like Tenso.

Other News

Ogata Megumi, voice of Tenoh Haruka/Sailor Uranus, has a role as the voice of an AI named Solon, in the live-action drama Teen Regime, now on NHK. You can watch Episode 1 in dub or sub on NHK’s site for the series. It’s pretty intriguing and M, is spot on for Solon’s voice, as her range allows her to be a lot of things.

Tamsyn Muir’s Nona the Ninth is hitting shelves soon, so, Meet the Real-World Rude Lesbian Swordfighter Behind Gideon the Ninth.

Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – September 3, 2022

September 3rd, 2022

I want to thank everyone who participated in our Okazu 20th Anniversary Treasure Hunt! You are all Yuri Masters!

The next thing we’ll be celebrating this year is a 5000th post on Okazu. Crazy, huh? I’ll be taking suggestions from Okazu Patrons on what I should write about for my 5000th post here.

And I want to apologize, I had a technical error in my newest Yuri Studio video that was beyind my limited technical skills to fix, that meant it will be delayed a week. But hopefully, you will all get to see the video I did to celebrate 20 years of Okazu next week! In the meantime, catch up on Season 3 of Yuri Studio so far!

Yuri Manga

I was extremely honored to be able to assist with the English edition of Nekobungi Sumire-sensei’s new manga collection, Tokyo Nekoka Project, “Tokyo Caticization Project.” It’s a fun and interesting collection of scifi, Yuri and cats. I hope you’ll pick up a copy and let Nekobungi-sensei know if you enjoyed it!  I thought it was great and you know how I feel about cats. (-_-)

Ratana Satis’ Pulse, Volume 1 is now available from Seven Seas! I reviewed this back in 2016 and am glad it will reach a wider audience now.

Vampeerz, Volume 2 is out now from Denpa Books. I reviewed this in 2020, and while I read the next couple of volumes I stopped reviewing it in Japanese. Not for any specific reason. If you like vampires and can write limericks, I invite you to consider writing a guest review!

Chapter 29 of Tsukiritai Onna to Tabetai Onna (作りたい女と食べたい女) is up and Kasuga is shopping for Valentine’s Day chocolates for Nomoto! Ahhh!

Spica wo Tsukamaete, Volume 1 (スピカをつかまえて) is up on the Yuricon Store. This is a heated school triangle about three girls who are rivals for the number one spot in school and more.

Lucky Star manga, which has been on hiatus for 8 years, will restart in Maitana magazine.

On Twitter, Nouchi-sensei announces the start of their school life Yuri series, Yukidoke to Agapanthus (雪解けとアガパンサス) running in Dengeki Daioh! (Which I would have bought, but saw that issue of Geijutsu Shincho with Rose of Versailles on the cover, on the shelf and bought that instead. ^_^)

Also from Twitter, we have Hime ha Atsuku Nigiru (姫はアツく握る) which nanaoku found and announced “It’s Yuri!”

From YNN Corespondent Pan, we have a new girls’ sports series, Tsubame Tip-off (つばめティップオフ!) about basketball, from Comic Meteor. Pan suggests it has Yuri undertones. Even without, I always welcome another sports drama featuring women. ^_^

Yuri Anime

Alex Mateo on ANN reports that Crunchyroll has Psycho-Pass 3 up for streaming now. If the lesbians are still alive, I’m open to a guest review!

Lycoris Recoil hit Japanese Trending on Twitter this morning with a spoiler from Episode 10. An admittedly not at all surprising spoiler, but spoiler nontheless, should you click.

Lucas DeRuyter has written an interesting perspective piece on Birdie Wing, from the point of view of someone who lives and breathes golf. Whiffs and Aces: Birdie Wing’s Mixed Depiction of Golf is over at ANN. h/t to Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean G for this!

Only a few days left to participate in the Okazu 20th Anniversary Yuri Treasure Hunt! Get your answers in!

Yuri Manga

Otherside Picnic Manga, Volume 2 has hit English-language shelves (and hell yes, I read it right away, thank you…. ^_^)  I think the manga version is doing an outstanding job on the Otherside creatures, making them both creepy and inexplicable without being gross. Highly recommended.

The Two of Them Are Pretty Much Like This, Volume 2 is up on the Yuricon Store and will be here in November (which is no longer that far away….!) I loved this manga in Japanese and am thrilled we’re getting it in English! I reviewed Volume 1 in July.

Hana Monogatari, Volume 1 (はなものがたり) is now on the Yuricon Store. This tale of a widow finding a new way to live with the help of makeup, scents and an attractive older woman to be friends with (or more), is so charming and sweet.

Canno’s new series, Koudou Ryou no Seizana Hibi (黄道寮の星座な日々,) Volume 1 is now out in Japanese!

Via Comic Natalie, Watashitachi no Owari to (わたしたちの終わりと) is a post-apocalyptic collection with two stories. The first about two women who are the last people in the world and the second about two women in a world that has collapsed when news that a meteorite will hit is received. These were originally published as doujinshi and have been collected by Comic Beam.

Via Comic Natalie, we learn about Keiyaku Shimai (ケイヤクシマイ), a Yuri romance-comedy about an office worker who makes a “sister contract” with a high school girl. And also, there is a foodie component, because why not, it has everything else. Check it out on Comic Walker!

It’s all Comic Natalie today. ^_^ In Hogushite, Yui-san,  (ほぐして、癒衣さん。) an office worker helps her co-worker unwind during late nights with hugs and massage. Volume 1 is available or you can read a sample at Sega Nico Video!

Yuri Drama Recording

SukeraSparo has released Futari Photograph Club ~Mainichi Issho Ni Kore Kara Mo~ (ふたりフォトグラフ 〜毎日を一緒に、これからも〜) on DLSite. DLSite has a special gift for folks who review this! Now that Drama CDs have become rarer, it’s pretty fun for me to see a new original Yuri drama recording! If you’d like a taste, there’s a free trial download.

Yuri Doujinshi

Via YNN Correspondent Patricia B, we have news of Datura Magazine. “Edited by Sunmi, the magazine will contain four stories by Pa-Luis, Emma Jayne, Mar Julia, and Cathy G. Johnson. This is the initial issue with plans to publish more if they are successful.” According to the official site, Datura is a “queer josei-inspired anthology series featuring a range of speculative and realist stories for an adult audience that, like the poisonous datura flower, might have an edge to them. We look to expand on ideas of “Girl’s Love,” along the lines of how its counterpart BL can be a gender-expansive space for exploring alternative sexuality.” Sounds fun!

There was a trailer for a new anime some years ago at the Tokyo Anime Contents Fair when I attended…I wonder if that’s being resurrected. Not surprisingly, this issue is very sold out. I’ll see about getting a copy, but I’m betting I missed my chance. ^_^
