Yuri Anime?

This week was the “Yuriten” event was held in Tokyo. The event began life as a Anoko ni Kiss to Shirayuri wo homage event and has become a kind of Yuri manga festival. This year, fans in took notice of a Kase-san series poster which notably listed a director and an art director. The YuriNavi blog suggests that a Kase-san anime might be in the making.

As we have nothing but this poster at this time, we are free to conjecture all we want. ^_^

Seven Seas has already released the first of three Kase-san manga, Kase-san and Morning Glory.

LGBTQ Comics News

Two very exciting Kickstarters this week, via YNN Correspondent Ashley S.

First up Bingo Love: A Black Queer romance graphic novella. Sample pages are up. Writer Tee Franklin,  Artist Jenn St-Onge and Colorist Joy San have put together an absolutely delightful comic. You bet I’ve already thrown money at it! The kickstarter just started and is already more than halfway there. Let beat the hell out of those goals shall we?

And Dates! An Anthology of Queer Historical Fiction (Volume 2) kickstarter has about a week to go and has already exceeded initial goal. If you enjoyed the first volume, and want more historical queer fiction, you know what to do!

We all cope with stress in different ways. Alison Bechdel draws comics about the different ways we cope. A new Dykes to Watch Out For is about all of us right now.

Live-Action News

Comic Natalie reports on a live action stage play, Embryo, put on by creative arts company fragment edge, that will run from May 17-21 in Tokyo that, is supposed to show the “World of Yuri.” It takes place in Shinjuku where the girls are shielded from the world by “Hazard Flower” which pretty much makes me think this show will be poisonous. But hey, if you’re there and it’s there, let us know!

YNN Correspodent Brendan B writes in with this positive news: “CW is currently making a TV adaptation of Black Lightning, one of the oldest black superheroes in comics. They just cast an actress named Nafessa Williams to play his oldest daughter, Anissa, who in the comics was one of DC’s first out lesbian superheroes, Thunder. I’m hoping that aspect is retained for the show (I’m optimistic since the CW does have some LGBT characters on their shows).“Awesome, thanks Brendan!

Live-Action News

The BBC and HBO are  working on a drama called Shibden Hall, about Anne Lister, the “first lesbian.” The Hollywood Reporter  describes the story thusly, “

Set in West Yorkshire in 1832, Shibden Hall is the story of landowner Anne Lister. Returning after years of exotic travel and social climbing, she determines to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, in Halifax, England, the cradle of the Industrial Revolution.

To do this, she must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister – who walked like a man, dressed head-to-foot in black, and charmed her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman.”

The Mary Sue has more details.

Goddess of manga, Riyoko Ikeda made an appearance on Japanese TV this month  with her visit to a morning show on TV Asahi, in which she discussed her early years.

Via ANN, a video of cast of the fourth new Sailor Moon Musical, Amour Eternal, performing “Koi Suru Satellite.”

Game News

Polygon reports that Steven Universe is coming to consoles with a second original RPG!  If you’re a phone gamer, there’s also a phone game called Sound Attack which is a SU-themed version of the Taiko Drum game.

Yuri Anime

ANN also has the news that anime streaming service Tubi has added Revolutionary Girl Utena to their line up. (It’s also available on the official Nozomi Youtube channel.)  I think it’s time for an updated list of legit digital anime streaming for Yuri. I bet you all keep forgetting Viewster, which has series like Strawberry Panic! and Aoi Hana, and is free and completely legit. ^_^ Maybe tomorrow.

Event News

I want to thank everyone who came to yesterday’s lecture at Hunter College. It was a genuinely fantastic time and I enjoyed the class presentations a great deal. Anne and I agreed that we’re going to have to up our own presentations to keep up with you young folks. ^_^ Thanks again for having me, Takeda-sensei! You’ll be able to see both Anne and I next at Queers & Comics in San Francisco!

LGBTQ Cartoon News

Did you catch the same-sex kisses in a recent episode of Star vs the Forces of Evil? The San Diego Gay and Lesbian News did. This is a first for Disney and, as it happens I *did* see that episode. ^_^ In fact, I’m planning on reviewing that cartoon tomorrow.

Not cartoon, but you may have seen news that Disney’s upcoming live-action version of Beauty and the Beast will include a gay character. There’s a lot of controversy about this, and not all from the anti-side. It’ll be very interesting to see how Le Fou is handled but, let’s face it, we’re still mostly pulling for Elsa to get a girlfriend in Frozen 2. ^_^

Yuri Visual Novel

Crunchyroll has a news item on the boobalicious “Yuri” VN, Alpha’s Adventures. I qualify “Yuri” only because of the stills that show Alpha abusing some poor woman’s breast like a 14 year-old boy might. It kinda icks me out that there’s anyone that thinks that looks sexy. Looks painful to me. ^_^;

Yuri Anime Goods

Sailor Moon Collectibles has the news of Premium Bandai’s earring and choker sets based on Sailor Uranus and Neptune’s Senshi uniforms.

Crunchyroll has news of an upcoming Tenjou Utena Figma figurine announced at GSC’s Wonder Festival. And while you’re setting up your doll, Crunchyroll wants you to dress in your Rose Crest shirt based on Revolutionary Girl Utena.

To celebrate the 4th Sailor Moon Musical DVD, Amour Eternal,  a mini-live event and talk show series is being held with 5 of the actresses in Tokyo, Osaka and Kanagawa this month.

Other News

This is utterly unrelated to anything, except that I think it’s cool. Check out ALI Project’s newest video, “Himiko Gaiden,” via Komatsu-san’s report on Crunchyroll. ^_^

If you have Turner Classic Movies tune in today at 2:15 AM for the psychedelic anime created by Tezuka and re-mastered last year, Belladonna of Sadness. ANN has the report.  This movie is beautiful, but Tezuka’s desire to complete it is, in part, responsible for the failure of his animation company.

The Japanese Maritime Defense Force has named Commander Ohtani Miho to be the first woman to skipper a destroyer in the MSDF’s history.

Yuri Anime

Crunchyroll has added older anime Gakuen Alice, which while not a “Yuri” anime has a lovely deep friendship and (spoilers) a dance between the two female best friends amidst some very fucked up emotional and physical abuse of little kids in a fantasy school series. It’s both a good and terrible series at once.

Yuri Artbook

ANN has the news about a new 50th anniversary Rose of Versailles Anime Artbook

LGBTQ Comics

We have Lumberjanes, Volume 2 up on the Yuricon Store. More camping adventures with lake monsters and ancient gods!

Also on the store, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Part One and Katie O’Neill’s darling comic Princess Princess: Ever After.

Other Readings

I so very strongly suggest reading Ijeoma Oluo‘s When A Woman Deletes A Man’s Comment Online. Oluo is not exaggerating even slightly. I’ve had guys follow me across multiple platforms to be able to keep ragging at me, as well.

Grant Jones takes a look at a classic anime in Neon Never Fades: Thirty Years of Bubblegum Crisis.  I have a fond place in my heart for BGC, as it was (pursuant to the above article) the first time a guy followed me across multiple platforms to be able to keep ragging at me, because Priss won in our very first popularity poll on the Yuricon Mailing List. This guy was really annoyed that people thought Priss was gay and blamed me. ^_^ Poor guy.

This sounds interesting: Emil Ferris’ My Favorite Thing is Monsters graphic novel has been reviewed by the New Yorker in A Graphic Novel Novel About a Young Girl, a Murder, and the Allure of Monsters.

Yuri Anime

NTR – Nestuzou Trap is still being sold as a Yuri anime slated for later this year.  ANN has details if you’re interested.

ANN has a fun little visit with the oldest active Utena fansite on the internet to celebrate 20 years of  Revolutionary Girl Utena. Wow. I guess hitting 20 years of writing about anime and manga, as well. Wow.

Brittany Vincent of Anime Now! takes a look at the lesbian scene in Scum’s Wish.

LGBTQ Comics

Becky Hawkins and Barry Deutsch have teamed up for the 1940’s PoC lesbian superhero comic we’ve all been waiting for, Superbutch! Really, read this one.

Amulet Book is adapting the Lumberjanes comic into a series of illustrated novels, woot!

YNN Correspondent Eric P has written in with most delightful news! The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Part 1, the long-awaited graphic novel continuation of the Legend of Korra series  will be out in June. And, for once, pun intended. Here is the official description of the book:

Relishing their newfound feelings for each other, Korra and Asami leave the Spirit World . . . but find nothing in Republic City but political hijinks and human vs. spirit conflict!

So, no punches pulled there. ^_^

LGBTQ Comics/Manga Fundraisers

Please help me help the Queers & Comics Conference to bring in LGBTQ comics creators to this amazing and important  event. Contribute to the Q&C Conference Travel Fund. I’m asking you to please give this effort a few bucks. There are 2 dozen or so queer artists who need help to get to this event. You’ll have a chance to receive excellent  rewards from artists (including a super spiffy Korra x Asami stained glass print poster!) As always, I’m not asking you to do something I won’t, I got myself the Manko Riot  t-shirt.^_^ And if you cannot contribute, please share the link widely. Tell as many groups, and lists and pages as you can.

I’ve also donated again to Rica Takashima’s Aliens in New York Project in which she puts on interactive events with her peek-a-boo boards, showcasing the full range of diversity in New York City.

All of the articles, podcasts and people I am following now on resistance issues all agree that you cannot be pulled in a million directions. For sanity’s sake, you have to find something to care about. It dawned on me that as much as I support women’s rights,  civil rights and LGBTQ rights and will not stop trying to defend them everywhere I can…the thing I care about is queer comics. I care about our freedom of expression to an obsessive point and I value people on the margins voices above those who speak from power.  And I hope, that if you also value queer voices, you’ll help support queer creators, including us here at Okazu. ^_^

YNN Ashley S wants to tell you about this fantstic Kickstarter, Tabula Idem: A Queer Tarot Comic Anthology. The comic anthology has a comic for each of the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck and the reward levels at $35 and over include a full-color printing of the cards.

Other News

The queer and NB folks at Comics Alliance take a look at Comics’ Sexiest Females.

This interview with Kelly Sue DeConnick on her comic book Bitch Planet is well worth reading.

Let’s wrap up today with this lovely new song from the Doubleclicks, “Women Know Math.”
