ynn_lissa“Yuri” Anime

Top story this week is Ichijinsha’s announcement of not one, but two, new anime.  Saburouta’s Citrus and Kodama Naoko’s NTR: Netsuzo Trap are both getting an anime in 2017.

The problem for me is that neither of them are Yuri. Sure, they both have lesbian content, but calling these two series Yuri would be like labeling Basic Instinct a “bisexual” story. It’s not. It’s a movie that uses bisexuality as a sexual fetish for people who enjoy or don’t mind mental disease as a plot driver.

Citrus has a significant problem. Mei’s behavior makes sense only in two contexts. One, she suffered sexual abuse as a child.  Everything she does makes perfect sense if viewed in this context. And in this context, we can see that this is not a Yuri story, Yuzu is her victim as she replays the cycle. The story does not bear this out, claiming Mei was merely “neglected.” (But. In Strawberry Panic! Yaya was likewise a sexual predator and likewise the reason we are given was that she was “neglected.” I am beginning to think that “neglected” is the crappy-manga shorthand for “sexually abused.”)

In the second context, and the one I think makes the most sense, Mei has Borderline Personality Disorder. Manipulation and instability are the drivers for the entire scenario. (I’ve known people with BPD. Mei is spot on.) In either case, the Yuri is attached to mental instability, as it was back in the 1980s.

In an interview on Comic Natalie, Saburouta discusses how Citrus does not use a seme/uke (or tachi/neko) dynamic. I posit that that is because it is not a Yuri narrative at all, but a story of sexual manipulation that happens to involve two female characters.

NTR is far more troubling as a story. It is quite literally one chapter after another of two horribly-undeveloped-as-characters girls having sex while their unwitting and even-less-developed-as-characters boyfriends are nearby. UGH, a million times over. This story makes my skin crawl.  None of the relationships are healthy. I understand that cuckolding is all the rage as a fetish, but I’m thoroughly repulsed by it in every possible way and this is yet another story of sexual manipulation that happens to involve two female characters.

I am not telling you to not enjoy these stories or to avoid these anime. I am telling you my opinions on them. These are not Yuri. They use lesbianism as a sexual fetish for people who enjoy or don’t mind mental disease as a plot driver.

If you enjoy either or both these stories then I am very happy for you. I am not at all happy for those of us who hoped we’d see positive representation of lesbian romance and relationships in our Yuri.

Yuri Manga

While we’re talking negative portrayals of Yuri, creator of Anoko no Kiss to Shirayuri wo has done an illustration and blurb for a  collection of stories by an artist named Nega, Nega and Canno belong to the same circle, through which most (if not all) of the stories in the collection were originally published. Comic Natalie has the news. Thanks to J for the correction.

The first issue of the monthly Comic Yuri Hime (!!) is now on sale and the cover, while rooted firmly in schoolgirl stereotypes is refreshingly not grotesquely infantilized.

Live Action

A lesbian kiss has been inserted in the Ghost in the Shell live action movie which will certainly make some folks happy.

Yuri Manga

Let’s distract ourselves with something weird. ZZZnoZ ~Nemuri-chan to Oyasumi~ (ZZZのZ ~ねむりちゃんとおやすみ~) is a new manga series focusing on how to get a good sleep. ^_^ A hardworking, poor sleeper woman meets another woman who falls asleep easily. Comic Natalie tells us it has a little light Yuri. Okay~~~

Yagate Kimi ni Naru, Volume 3 (やがて君になる) has a release date in Japan at the end of this month.

Eclair,  Anata no Hibiku Yuri Anthology (エクレア あなたに響く百合アンソロジー) is another new Yuri anthology collection of note, along with Yuri no Sekai Nyuumon (百合の世界入門).

Yuri Anime

At last night’s Moonlight Party by Viz (which was exactly as excruciating as I expected,) we finally got dub clips of the Sailor Moon S season. I’m pleased to say that the voices for Haruka and Michiru sounded great. Erica Mendez will be a fine Haruka. (I still wish that after 20 years, American VAs would figure out how to pronounce things.)

Viz also announced the release of Sailor Moon R Movie  – check out the ANN report for details. While Sailor Moon R isn’t Yuri at all, it did give us “Moon Revenge,” which is a great song. ^_^

I also shared a bunch of pictures of my Sailor Moon goods collection on Twitter, which you can see here.  ^_^ It was nice to revisit some of the items.

Live-Action News

Live-action Saki is actually a thing. ^_^ I keep thinking it’s a joke, somehow.  Here’s some early visuals, via ANN.

Other News

I’m not going to lie, this week has been hard for many of us.  So many of us are abjectly terrified and not just for ourselves, but for others we know, and the planet itself.

A friend, Claire Monserrat Jackson,  developed a concept that will be a key component of me remaining sane in the upcoming year – Keepsgiving. Keepsgiving takes Thanksgiving beyond just giving thanks to giving what we can to actively help one another. I began by setting up recurring donations to Planned Parenthood, since the threat to women’s health has never been so high. I’m going to give to groups like GLSEN, Lambda Legal, NAACP, and to local food banks. You can let folks know you support your local library, or how they can enjoy national parks…anything. It doesn’t have to be anything major. No commitment needed. Here is a list of pro-women, pro-immigrant, pro-earth organizations for you to consider donating to or volunteering with

If you’d like to participate in Keepsgiving,  just pop over to the Keepsgiving page on Facebook and share your act of kindness. Let’s Keep Giving. We need each other more than ever.

Tarwater (Hen and Chick,) Barbara Ann Wright (Pyramid Waltz, Coils), JD Glass (Red Light, Punk Like Me) and Mari Kurisato (Guns of Penance), plus loads of other writers you should definitely get to know.

Yuri Manga

From Minamoto Hisanari (creator of Fu~Fu) Season Theater Theatrical, Volume 1 (シーズンシアターシアトリカル), which is running in Comic Cune is hitting shelves at the end of the month. This is a saccharine-sweet story of a bunch of women trying to run a small theater troupe.

Comic Yuri Hime for January 2017 (コミック百合姫2017年1月号) is up for pre-order. Let me remind you that as of this issue, the magazine is going to be monthly.

Card Captor Sakura News

The Card Captor Sakura franchise is getting a “big” announcement next month, according to ANN. The new manga is in full swing with Sakura, now in middle school, having dreams and her friends and she finding and defeating all-new cards. An anime for the series is planned, as well.  I know what *I* want it the new be – and what I think it is. What do you think? ^_^

The first CCS movie is also get theatrical releases in Japan, Crunchyroll reports. Check out the trailer on YouTube

Live-Action News

ANN has the report on a live-action movie of long-running manga Haikara-san ga Touru, a manga set in Taisho Period about a tomboy, Benio, who has shockingly modern ideas about women’s worth and clothing and abilities. Sounds fun. ^_^

Yuri Manga

Today’s top news comes from Seven Seas and represents the very wrongest I have ever been about a Yuri title in my whole life. ^_^ Seven Seas has licensed Nagata Kabi’s My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness. I haven’t had a chance to read it, yet, but I’ll bump it up on the review pile. The news is a double-fisted bit of good news, because our friend Jocelyne Allen is working on the translation!  The English edition has a June 2017 release date.

LGBTQ Comics

Lauren Bullock over at Black Nerd Problems has offered up the Five Queer AF Comics Starring Black and Brown Women and I’m just standing behind her nodding enthusiastically. I’m a huge fan of Agents of the Realm (and fangirled all over Mildred at Flamecon!) and Ari North’s Always Human.

And via YNN Correspondent Elizabeth F, James Whitbrook’s passionate request that Marvel do better at LGBTQ representation on io9.

Other News

Grand Stage Live is…live! Check out this picture of the ladies of the Grand Stage on stage.

The live action Saki cast has full cast visuals, according to Komatsu-san over at Crunchyroll News.

The Economist looks at the power of comics journalism.

We’re heading into the final week of Dangerous Women: Tales of Queer Villainy and we still have some stretch goals to reach! If you read this blog regularly, I know you love good lesbian fiction and I’m not joking when I tell you this is some of the best I’ve ever read. So please get in there and back this project! I and 12 others have given it my blood, sweat and tears and we want it to get as much love as possible!

Ichijinsha’s got a pile of stuff coming out, including collection like  Tsutsui’s Jackpot ni Hohoende (ジャックポットに微笑んで) Mimoto’s Yutasan ha Mamanaranai!, (ゆたさんはままならない!), Sunao Kasuga’s Sumedo Jigoku no Inferno, Volume 2, popular Pixiv artist Tokuwotsumu’s Shuuden de Kaesanai, Tatta Hitotsu no Houhou (終電で帰さない、たった1つの方法) and Kodama Naoko’s Zankou Noise Perfect Volume (残光ノイズ).

From Kodansha, the second volume of HaruYuri (ハルユリ) by Nanatsu Tsubaki hit shelves this week.

There’s a new Yuri mook which has a fairly questionable title, Yuri no Sekai Nyuumon (百合の世界入門). It has content by Yuri creators, such as Canno and Kuzushiro, at least. It includes has an interview with Morinaga Milk and art by many of your faves. Check out the gallery of art from the book over on Comic Natalie.

Yuri Games

Christine Love, creator of popular indie game don’t take it personally babe, it just ain’t your story, has a new game, the BDSM-focused Ladykiller in a Bind. This is an actual erotic story about BDSM and consent, by and for adults. Gamasutra has a good overview of Ladykiller, and Ana Valens takes a look at the hypocrisy of the game ecosystem on Steam that allows games with school girls having sex, but not consensual queer adult BDSM games.

Maria-sama ga Miteru News
