Yuri Anime

YNN Correspondent, Beatriz M. wants you to know that she recently hosted a Revolutionary Girl Utena podcast about which she says, “We get deep, we get gay, and we continue to ask, “What does this mean, Ikuhara?”

ANN Reports that the Aria dub kickstarter has reached it’s all-series dub stretch goal.

Kimono-wearing fox-eared girls populate Amano Sakuya’s Konohana Kitan manga, running in Comic Yuri Hime which will soon have an anime of it’s own. (Continuing Ichijinsha’s trend of picking the stories I like least to make into anime. At least this one is genuinely Yuri, I just don’t much like animal-eared characters.)  ANN has the report.

Rose of Versailles is getting a game and an animation based in a high-school setting from Otomate, a romance game company. We totally needed that.  (Now I think about it, I may have a Berubara Gakuen doujinshi somewhere. ^_^.)

ANN also has a report for an anthology dealing with Gender Identity Disorder being published in Japan called My Husband is Too Attractive! I Entered the Family Register of a Hot Guy that Used to be a Woman.

We’ve added  Hitoto’s Shuumatsu Nani Shi ni Ikou? (週末なにしにいこう?) to the Yuricon Store.
Also added is Momono Moto’s collection Yuunagi Mabrette Perfect Volume (夕凪マーブレット完全版), which is especially interesting as it is the first collected volume from Galette Works, the publishing team that is putting together the Galette Anthology of which Volume 3 is also up on the Store.

Yuri Anime

Great news from YNN Correspondent Verso S. The Asagao to Kase-san animation clip, Kimi no Hikari (キミノヒカリ) animated by Pony Canyon, has received enough of an enthusiastic response that a second animation clip is planned for 2018! The announcement is accompanied by a new, cute illustration by Takashima Hiromi-sensei.  This seems like a good time to remind you all that Kase-san and Morning Glories and Kase-san and Bento are available in English now and Kase-san and Shortcake will be released in mid-September.

ANN reports that the Citrus anime, based on Saboruta’s on-going manga, has announcements of cast members, key visuals, music and a promotional video, which you can watch on Youtube.

For Utena fans in and around Tokyo, Amanda Whalen over at ANN has news of 20th anniversary Revolutionary Girl Utena art exhibit in Ikebukuro in November.

The Nozomi Rightstuff Aria kickstarter continues to be successful and they’ve added a final stretch goal to dub for all the remaining Aria animation. Read the report on ANN.

Yuri Manga

YNN Correspondent Rob has written in from Italy to let us know that Girl Friends by Milk Morinaga is being published in 5 volumes in Italy!

Sakura Trick wraps up in the October issue of Mangatime Kirara magazine on sale September 27th. Comic Natalie reports.

Also from Comic Natalie, Ours magazine, (home of After Hours manga) is starting up a high school Yuri drama called Atashi no Sempai.

Awajima Hyakkei, (淡島百景) Shimura Takako’s webcomic about an all-female performing troupe that in no way is anything like Takarazuka, has made it to Volume 2.

Oh oh! And! Konno Kita has a new Yuri manga collection called Lily Lily Rose from Birz Comics, which I think is a great publisher for her slightly off-beat creeptastic, but beautiful, Yuri.

Hakusensha is putting all of Shimizu Reiko’s Kaguya-hime on e-book, with the first three volumes free and the rest 30% off on their e-book site (in Japanese, there is no licensed translation.). This series has it all, Yuri, BL, incest, clones, alien mold, survival on an island, an ancient feudal Chinese kingdom and utter craziness. I recommend it highly!

Fujeida Miyabi’s Colorful End Contents are available on Comic Walker for free. This is just one chapter for his Comic Cune entry, but it’s nice to see his work again. And, while I was searching Fujieda-sensei’s work, I see that his “headphone girl” doujinshi collection Aamairo Crossover is available on US Kindle!

Anime News

Crunchyroll is doing a spotlight on Aria the Animation, which they have added to their streaming catalog, just as Nozomi/RightStuf is running a Kickstarter for an Aria dub release! AND Komatsu-san at Crunchyroll reports on the special long promotional video for Aria the Avennire – which is headed to Blu-Ray, He notes that “all three episodes in one 60-minute disc was announced in May. The set also comes with a bonus DVD that includes two stage reading parts by the voice actresses from the events in June 2016 and April 2017.”

Nozomi also announced a definitive Blu-Ray edition of the complete Revolutionary Girl Utena TV series and movie at their Otakon panel last weekend. (I’m sure it will be amazing…and just I can’t get past the screwed up dimensions of the model images on their press release. It’s stupid, but the boxes are just so out of proportion…)

Crunchyroll also has a spotlight on Yoshitomi Abe’s series Haibane Renmei, which is on my “to rewatch” list.

One more from Crunchyroll News. Anime Studio Mappa listed a new anime spearheaded by Utena director, Ikuhara Kunihiko. No more details available at this time, but I’m sure we’ll hear more as time goes on. Scott Green also reports on an issue of Eureka magazine that focuses on Ikuhara and his work. (Some of you may remember that Eureka magazine ran the Current State of Yuri Culture issue from December 2014, as well.)

Other News

Gyan28-san has put together a really huge, comprehensive list of Japanese LGBTQ groups online if that interests you. It interests me, so I have a smaller, still-growing Twitter list of JP LGBTQ resources to follow.

The Guardian has a lovely photo set called Love Island! LGBTQ Japan – in pictures.

Yuri Manga

From Birz Comics, Planet Closet (惑星クローゼット) by Tsubana is a “Yuri-ish” sci-fi story involving two girls from alternate dimensions, giant monsters and a threat to humanity. Huh. Sounds pretty good.

Takemiya Jim-sensei noted that a preview chapter from Fujyourina Atashi-tachi (不条理なあたし達) is available on on Hakusensha’s  Rakuen La Paradis Volume 24 (楽園 Le Paradis)  web site.

Takemiya-sensei has joined a number of other popular Yuri manga artists in Yuricon: Jimoto Hougenhen (地元方言編) which is available for your Kindle in Japan or in the US! Great name, too. ^_^

Via Mey on Autostraddle, the Hi-Fi Fight Club by Carly Usdin looks super fun!

Yuri Anime

ANN reports that Viz is streaming a clip of the dub of Sailor Moon Crystal‘s 3rd season.

Crunchyroll has added Haibane Remei, and Michiko & Hatchin (which is not Yuri, but was a damn good female lead anime) to their catalog!

ANN reports that the second of two films for the franchise, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Detonation has been announced.

Yuri Essay

I was asked to write a short piece on why we call the genre “Yuri” as opposed to the publisher-generated “Girls Love.” (Long story short, “Yuri” keeps the connection between the genre and lesbian culture.) Read Why We Call It Yuri on Anime Feminist.

Priscilla Frank wrote a great piece on Huffington Post about the hashtag – and why it’s stupid that the comics industry is still using tired excuses for not “being able to find” women to hire in The Comic Book Industry Officially Has No Excuse Not To Hire Women.

Yuri Manga

The Kase-san official Twitter account reminds us that, as of today,  Apron to Kase-san (エプロンと加瀬さん) is available in Japan. Also available, the deluxe version with the Asagao to Kase-san animation clip on Blu-Ray.

Hirao Auri’s idol group Yuri romantic comedy Oshi ga Budokan Ittekuretara Shinu  (推しが武道館いってくれたら死ぬ) Volume 3 is available for those of us who are actually rooting for Eripyo.

And don’t miss Volume 4 of Nakatani Nio’s (to me, controversial) Yagate Kimi ni Naru (やがて君になる).

Pixiv Yuri manga Deaike Site de Imouto to Deau Hanashi (出会い系サイトで妹と出会う話)  about a woman who signs up for a meetup on a lesbian site only to discover the woman she’s come to meet is her younger sister, is being collected into a volume.

Comic Natalie reports on Spirits magazine, in which a new “rap Yuri” manga, Catcher in the Rhyme (キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライム)  will be beginning this month in issue 34.  Comic Natalie also says that  Yuri “comedy,”  Sekai de Ichiban Oppai ga suki! (世界で一番おっぱいが好き!) will be starting up in Comic Cune‘s September issue, but I think imma pass on that one. ^_^;

Kat Callahan continues to take a deep look at NTR: Netsuzou Trap anime at Anime-Now. I still don’t agree that it is worth watching, but I think her perspective is valid and important. (It comes down to, I think, completely different ways of interacting with the story. It’s all “right” and no one is “wrong” here.) Kat is very clear that this is her interpretation, and I agree with the abuse angle, but, exactly as it is in Citrus, I do not think the apparent abuse is anything but a fetishy “here’s why she’s so creepy” handwave, and not ever meant to be dealt with honestly in the narrative.
