Yuri MangaYNN_Lissa

A lot of rebooting, reworking and re-releasing is going on in the Yuri manga world right now. With the dissolution of Hirari and Tsubomi magazines, Ichijinsha has picked up a number of older titles for Kindle-only releases. This means that they are not available to buyers based outside Japan, but it’s darn interesting to see them bring so many old series back as digital releases.

Here’s a small selection of older Yuri titles I’m seeing up for JP Kindle release:

Mitsukini Hajime’s Musou Honey (妄想HONEY)

Hakamada Mera’s Yozora no Ouji to Asayake no Hime (夜空の王子と朝焼けの姫)

Yoshitomi Akihito’s Futari to Futari (ふたりとふたり)

Himawari Souya’s Sakura Buntsuu (さくら文通)

Sakamoto Mono’s Pie wo Agemasho, Anata ni Pie wo ne   (パイをあげましょ、あなたにパイをね)

Kindaichi Renjurou’s fascinating Josei collection by a male author, Mermaid Line (マーメイドライン)

In addition to loads of Kindle releases, Ichijinsha is releasing new editions of several older titles:

Rokuroichi’s  Kuchibiru ni Saketa Orange New Edition (くちびるに透けたオレンジ 新装版)

Fujieda Miyabi’s Iono-sama Fanatics Special Edition Volume 1 (with new original Drama CD) and Special Edition Volume 2 (with new original Drama CD.) Also available on Kindle.

I love that so much Yuri is available digitally and frustrated as heck that I can’t just buy it that way.

An anthology about which I know nothing, called Kimashi (キマシ)

Kuzushiro’s spin-off from Inugami-san to Nekoyama-san, Ryuuzaki-san to Torao-san, Yuri Hime Short Story Collection. (龍崎さんと虎生さん ~百合姫短編集~)

Saburouta’s 4th volume of Citrus, with an option for a special edition that includes a Drama CD.

And the September volume of Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫 2015年 09 月号), which will ship mid-July.

Yuri Game

The folks over at St. Michael’s School for Girls, are at Anime Expo right now(!) and have a  Sono Hanbira short story collection, Shiroyuri Memorial, planned (白百合のメモリアル).

LGBTQ Event

YNN_MariKWhat a way to end a week. As most of you probably know, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that marriage equality is the law of the land here in the USA yesterday. What an amazing way to start Pride weekend. I’m blinded by rainbows and practically weak from thanking people for their good wishes.

Here’s random wonderful things, separated by pictures of Yuri couples getting married.. ^_^

Comic Natalie reports that Auri Hirao’s newest attempt at a Yuri manga Oshika Budokan Itte Kuretara Shinu (推しが武道館いってくれたら死ぬ)  will follow an idol and her fan. I wonder if it will have any Yuri.

YNN_LissaYuri Anime

Starting off with ANN, they have any number of reports of interest for us:

Aria the Avvenire anime trailer is posted and has characters new and old. Clearly, they feel that we should be over our hurt feelings by now. They are probably right. ^_^

UK fans can look for K-ON Season 2 complete sets from Manga Entertainment. (Presumably, they have previously released Season 1.)

The first 12 minutes of the new Ghost in the Shell movie has been released online. And Funimation will be streaming the 4 Arise OVA episodes as they are shown on Japanese TV under the name Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture.

Yuru Yuri is getting new Natsuyatchumi episodes before the new season premieres in Japan in October. The cast is singing the theme songs.

Live Action

More from ANN:

I imagine that some of you will be interested to know that all-female musical troupe Takarazuka is planning a Rurouni Kenshin adaptation. They’ve obviously been successful with recent anime and manga adaptations, which is sort of interesting.

And Blood-C: The Last Mind is getting a stage adaptation. I cannot imagine. In fact, if I were to see it, I am 100% certain, I’d be laughing hysterically into a handkerchief the entire time. Just LOOK at those “evil” faces. Gawd. ^_^

Ghost in the Shell: Arise is also getting a stage adaptation.  I bet Kusanagi falls backward off a “building.” ^_^

Comic Natalie has a link to the continuation of the Denpagumi live action series, called Innocent Lilies: The End and the Beginning.

LGBTQ Webcomic

From Senior YNN Correspondent, Erin S, Misunderstood. “A pure hearted warrior is sent on a quest to retrieve an emblem stolen from a local village. Yet this warrior is in for a surprise when she enters the territory of the demoness who stole the trinket.” The comic is available for purchase on Gumroad.

Other News

You know how I’m always encouraging you to read books without pictures, too? ^_^ Well ANN obviously feels the same way, so Gabriella Ekens put together a list of literature that gives insight to Psycho-Pass, from 1984 to Heart of Darkness. Good stuff and worth a read. (As are the books she suggests!)

Yuri Webcomics

YNN Correspondent Kimber Stormer wanted to share the news that the first Italian Yuri manga-novel Orange Cream by Scarlett Bell and Aeryn Sun, is now available in Spanish and English. The tropes are strong with this one, but the art is nice.

You are *so* going to want to read Mahou Josei Chimaka, available complete and free on Sparkler Monthly! What happens to magical girls who don’t beat the bad guy?

If you enjoy it as much as I did, you can buy a digital copy or pre-order the print version on the Sparkler site.

LGBTQ Comics News

Publisher’s Weekly is getting into the Pride month spirit with 13 Great LGBTQ Comics.

At CBR, Brian Cronin takes a look at the history of Trans characters at DC and Marvel.

DC Comics put together a video history of LGBTQ characters in their comics.

It’s a random news kinda day. ^_^

Manga and Comics News

A collection of Shimura Takako’s color paintings has been collected and is being released in June. This will include her watercolor cover images for Horou Musuko /Wandering Son and Aoi Hana /Sweet Blue Flowers. Fans of this talented and compelling writer might be interested. Shimura Takako Painting Collection (志村貴子画集) hits shelves in Japan in late June.

In 2013, I talked a bit about a “gentlewoman thief” series by Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin called Bandette. Volume 1 and Volume 2 have been collected for this terrific YA-friendly tale of a good gal rogue and her friends.

Kia Asamiya, best known for his Silent Mobius series has just wrapped up a new Silent Mobius series! I’m actually very interested to see where his art has gone, since it was always so clean and adult. But that’s not the trend anymore. Anyway, if you, like me, want to spend time with the women of AMP, check out Silent Mobius QD. (サイレントメビウスQD)

Remember the reboot of Read or Die from 2013? It made it all the way to a collected volume before they killed it – R.O.D. Rehabilitation.

Tagame Gengoroh’s bara manga My Brother’s Husband (弟の夫) tells the story of a man whose twin brother is comming home to Japan to visit, bringing the man he married in Canada and their daughter. Bara like this is pushing on those sore points of gay identity and marrriage equality and I’m very glad. ^_^

Hoshino Lily has a new art collection that Comic Natalie reports as having both BL and Yuri gems. Hoshino Lily Precious Gem Gallery (宝石廻廊) hit streets yesterday. I love her art.

ANN reports that Japanese publisher Kadokawa has launched a Global version of their Comic Walker website. Targeted at Japanese readers, it’s bringing comics, manhua and manhwa into the digital platform from Singapore, China and Taiwan. I know I’ve mentioned it before, but their Japanese Comic Walker site is worth taking a look at, not least because they do have some Yuri and some English works (although not many that are both.)

Non-Fiction Book News

For the folks out there doing research, scholar Casey Brienza is bring two critical works into the world in the near future. Global Manga: ‘Japanese’ Comics without Japan? will look at manga-influenced comics from countries outside Japan:

This book takes seriously the political economy and cultural production of this so-called ‘global manga’ produced throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia and explores the conditions under which it arises and flourishes; what counts as ‘manga’ and who gets to decide; the implications of global manga for contemporary economies of cultural and creative labour; the ways in which it is shaped by or mixes with local cultural forms and contexts; and, ultimately, what it means for manga to be ‘authentically’ Japanese in the first place.

Global Manga will be published in July 2015, edited by Casey with a host of expert authors.

Coming in the beginning of 2016, Casey has also written Manga in America: Transnational Book Publishing and the Domestication of Japanese Comics.

Other News

Well. It appears that Denpagumi inc.’s live-action series Shiroyuki Gakuen was so popular that they are making another crappy live-action series! Comic Natalie reports on Shiromajyo Gakuen: Kyoshitsu ni Omoide ga Nai! Like the first series it is most likely to be a thinly-plotted series of soft core cosplay with, I have no doubt, some Yuri.

And at least I will be happy to hear that Kanno’s Ano ko Kiss to Shiroyuri wo series is getting a Drama CD (again, via Comic Natalie)! Unexpected and pleasant. Volume 3 has a June street date, no link as of yet. I guess I never reviewed Volume 2.  Huh.

Crunchyroll News reports on the most obvious collaboration ever – Yuri Kuma Arashi and Gloomy Bear. ^_^

Onto a slightly different topic, Mary Review,  a magazine for women writers and for all readers, is getting it’s start after a successful Kickstarter. Just thought some of you might find that interesting.
