Short report this week, while I go out and have some fun.

Yuri Game News

YNN Senior Correspondent Grisznak reports that the English language edition of the Love Live! game is set to mostly remove all implications of Yuri relationships between the characters from the script. I did a little checking and the company, KLab America, is the American office of the original Japanese company for the game, so if this is important to you,  write them and politely let them know how you feel.

24 May update: KLab America has responded to your comments on their Facebook page (click the link for the full response. They apologize, but don’t appear to plan to change anything:

“We would also like to address one specific concern raised by some gamers, namely that we were engaging in self-censorship by removing or softening some playful same-sex banter from the English version. This absolutely was not our intention. We localized the game based on our interpretation of the original anime contents, but at the same time, we also respect our gamers’ interpretations as well. We take to heart the comments from some of our gamers who felt we were dismissing them in some way by some of our translations. We truly regret any hard feelings that we may have caused. We love our games and our gamers and don’t want any of them to change!”

The creator of Starlight Vega wants thank everyone for their tremendous support of this Yuri-themed visual novel. You can still download the trial on Greenlight. If you’ve played this and have any thoughts and would like to write up something about first impressions, drop me a line!

Yuri Manga

YNN Correspondent Jackie S has amazing news -“per Takashima Hiromi’s twitter, the Kase-san series is getting a third volume sometime in August.” and she also points out that there is new chapter online (“Lemongrass and Kase-san“) to read for free.  I’m going to seriously give Shinsokan Publishing some props here. When they said they were going to keep publishing Hirari manga, I did not believe them. I was completely wrong and I’m glad about that. ^_^

Citrus, Volume 4  which will hit streets in July in Japan, will also be available in a special edition bundled with a Drama CD, reports Comic Natalie. (Just as an aside,  Comic Natalie also calls this a “sister-love” title, so folks who think that incest is not the main selling point, that’s just denial talking. ^_^ )

I’m adding this one in because I find the description amusing. Comic Natalie calls Kuzushiro’s Love Desu (which hit streets this past week) a tale of expressing love through gun and knife. ^_^

Yuri Webcomics and Kickstarters

Comic Natalie reports on a new Yuri love comedy webcomic debuting on Japanese webcomic site Comic Walker called Only You~ The Plan to Get You and Me Alone Together  (オンリー☆ユー ~あなたと私の二人ぼっち計画~). You can read the first chapter (in Japanese) for free on the Comic Walker reader.(The big red button with the yellow arrow launches the reader. )

A few weeks ago, we mentioned a Korean Yuri webcomic, Fluttering Feelings. YNN Correspondent TN has discovered that it is being translated into Japanese here. I hope this is a legit translation!

We found this cool Kickstarter from DieGo Comics Publishing: European Comics Journal #02 – LGBT characters in comics, with some nice, affordable perks. They are super close to funding, and are down to the final few days. I’ll be throwing a few bucks into the hat.

Event News

After last week’s amazing Queer & Comics conference, there have been any number of reports. Here are three that you should definitely take a look at:

Elizabeth Beier sketched panels as they were happening and created these conference notes .

Sara Lautman has created an illustrated report of the event.

Soizick Farre created this entertaining video journal of the event.

Other News

NPR has an article covering the Shibuya same-sex marriage law in this article on The First Place in East Asia to Welcome Same-Sex Marriage.

Via YNN Correspondent Elizabeth F and ANN, we now have confirmation that the Sailor Moon musicals (which have been pretty decent, I think) have reached the third “season” and will now add the remaining Outer Senshi. :-D

If you’re in the Toronto area, this weekend is the exceptional and always exciting Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Loads of manga and LGBTQ-friendly content and programming and admission to the event itself is free (some programming may have registration or costs associated, so check the program.)

June 6th will see a Yuru Yuri Field Day event in Japan in Hibiya.

I’ve got a lot to think about after Queer & Comics, but I hope to have a report for you tomorrow.

Other News

Tokyo Wrestling’s Yuki Keiser has put together an article for Time Out Tokyo of 10 LGBTQ-friendly places in Tokyo. I get this question from time to time and can’t really answer it, so I’m thrilled to have this article to point to. The article is in Japanese, but you can always look the names up on Google Maps (and use Google translate features to make your way through the article.)

I haven’t had a moment to watch any of it, but Wish Upon the Pleiades, the collaboration between Subaru car company and Gainax is streaming on Crunchyroll. It had, I thought, room for Yuri, but we’ll see when I finally watch it. ^_^

Yuri Webcomics

From YNN Correspondent Feifei W., a lovely little Chinese Yuri webcomic, 麻杆和大奶. Feifei commented that she loves the fact that it’s all portrayed as normal everyday life. Of course so do I. ^_^

YNN correspondent Celes R suggested this sweet tale of two lovers through their lives together by Pixiv user Tsubakin ◎の「セイ」, which she translates as “Born This Way.”

Yuri Manga

ANN Reports that the Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion-, Vol. 1 manga has been pushed back to December.

If I recall correctly, and it’s been a long time, so I may not, somewhere tucked into Seven Seas’ new license Franken Fran, there’s some Yuri.

Yuricon Store

We are approaching the end of Phase 1 on the new Yuricon Store, in which I backfill all the Yuri from past years that is still available. It’s slow work (and full of decisions like “there’s 1 copy left of this on Amazon JP, do I bother listing it?) but we’re getting there!

If you want a quick bookmark or feed to check to see what we’ve recently added, thanks to our beloved and talented webmaster, Lissa Pattillo, you can now do that easily: http://www.yuricon.com/store/new/ is text only, but you’ll be able to see quickly what was added.

Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – May 2, 2015

May 2nd, 2015

YNN_LissaYuri Manga

Now is a great time to start leaning Japanese. ^_^ There is a huge pile of new Yuri manga to tell you about, but above them all, tucked away in a little tweet I saw this week is something that made me realize that something critical and important is happening. First, the news…then I’ll tell you what I think about it.

Hayashiya Shizuru-sensei tweeted that May 19th Shuiesha’s Young Jump Comics imprint is publishing Strawberry Shake. (ストロベリーシェイク). I have no doubt that this is a re-publishing of her Yuri Hime series Strawberry Shake Sweet, which came out in two volumes (Volume 1 | Volume 2) in 2006 and 2009.

Fujieda Miyabi-sensei’s series Iono-sama Fanatics, originally published by Mediaworks in 2005-2007, is also getting a new edition, this time from Yuri Hime Comics in a 2 Volume-set; with Drama CD (Volume 1 | Volume 2) and manga only (Volume 1Volume 2) .

We already can see that Yuri Hime has re-released a number of volumes that originally ran in the defunct Yuri magazines Tsubomi and Pure Yuri Anthology Hirari and, we’ve seen a few other companies scrambling to pick up artists known for Yuri (such as Morinaga Milk-sensei at Hobunsha and Morishima Akiko-sensei at Gentosha,) I think we can do a little conjecturing on what we’re seeing right now.

Yuri was effectively born as a genre of its own in 2003. Yuri Hime magazine launched in 2005 with a roster of top names creating original Yuri manga they thought would sell. And they sort of sold. Because “Yuri” was still so new, a lot of people didn’t know or care. They knew these folks from doujinshi, but didn’t necessarily want to think of themselves as a “Yuri” fan.

In 2010-2013, Yuri had a growth spurt and since it now existed as a genre, a few new magazines joined the fray. Yuri sections started, tentatively, to exist in Japanese bookstores. Publishing priorities changed, and some magazines were closed up, but the audience and the existence of Yuri as a genre was firmed up. Now in 2015 when “Yuri” is a new, but established genre, we’re seeing an interesting retro wave – just over a decade into this evolution, current publishers are looking back at the top-notch stuff that sort of just slid under the radar in the mid-2000s.

There’s more of an audience now for original, non-trope-y Yuri than there was in the mid-2000s. There are more publishers who will publish Yuri and more artists who are creating Yuri series. It makes sense for publishers to look at their established, successful artists and revisit older, completed works that just need some tweaking. It makes sense for the artists, too.

Those of you who missed Strawberry Shake Sweet the first time around will get a chance to see it for the first time (and hopefully, Hayashiya-sensei will get a chance to fix the things she didn’t feel worked.) And for those of us who loved the series the first time around, we’ll be enticed by the new content that is sure to be included (and Drama CDs.)

Don’t hold your breath on either of these titles being licensed. Seven Seas has already flatly stated that they will not license Iono-sama, and they do not have a working relationship with Shueisha. By all means feel free to write them and ask them to change their minds, but don’t expect it to work. You know how emotional men are, they just get all sulky. ^_^

In other upcoming Yuri news…

Yuri Hime Comics is releasing Sukoyaka’s collection Yometori (よめとり), a collection of Morinaga Milk-sensei’s Tsubomi shorts, Ohime-sama no Himitsu (お姫さまのひみつ) and do not forget Kuzushiro’s Love Desu ~Short Story Collection~ (ラブデス。~短期集中連載集~).

Otsu Hiyori’s incredibly sweet and awkward tale of friendship and love Otomodachi kara Hajimemashou (お友達からはじめましょう。) is continuing in a second volume. I reviewed Volume 1 back in 2013.

One more for Hayashiya-sensei. The second volume of Hayate x Blade 2 (はやて×ブレード2 2 )  hits shelves this month. Whee!

Volume 3 of Akili’s Stretch (ストレッチ) also has a May release date.

No title as of yet, but according to this tweet, Hirao Auri-sensei is starting up a new Yuri series in Comic Ryuu magazine about an idol and a fan. The series will start in the August issue (which is released in June, for reasons that make sense only to magazine publishers.)

A new light novel series in the wake of Maria-sama ga MiteruYonin Seishimai Yurimonochou (四人制姉妹百合物帳) tells of an exclusive club in an exclusive school, “The Salon” where the girls are as close as sisters.

And Yuri-iro Coordinate Futari no Kiss Moyou (百合色コーディネート ふたりのキス模様) is a romance novel about a girl with a dream to become a fashion designer and model she meets at school. It’s so cute and “girl’s romance comics” sounding, I think I’m going to have to get it. Of course it also looks servicey as hell. ^_^;

Event News

If you can’t make this week’s Queer & Comics, you can still be a part of this historic event. Help fund an artist so they can make the event themselves. The perks are great and you’ll help make history!

The next Comitia is being held on May 5th at Big Sight in Tokyo. Takemiya Jin-sensei will be selling a Chou Chou Nan Nan sequel. And Circle UKOZ has put some teasers up on Pixiv for their original releases. If anyone is going, can you pick me up a copy of these? ^_^

Other News

Lauren Orsini has published a new book that might be of interest to some: Build Your Anime Blog: How to Get Started, Stand Out, and Make Money Writing About What You Love. I’m quoted in it, but in my standard “stream of consciousness” style of talking, since it was a phone interview. So expect me to sound breathless. ^_^

YNN Correspondent James W. thought the researchers  among us might be interested in a new Girls Novel Encyclopedia in Japanese, (少女小説事典) that traces the history of shoujo shousetsu and the various booms that they have undergone with encyclopedia entries for series of note.

Translator friend Jocelyne Allen is promoting her newest effort, Red Girls: The Legend of the Akakuchibas by Kazuki Sakuraba. It’s a scifi-fantasy about several generations of women in a family, with forays into the occult, girl gangs and more. It sounds like beach-reading to me and is now on my summer-book list.

Let’s end up on a squee note: Check out this fantastically creative Sailor Moon Battle armor cosplay!

Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – April 25, 2015

April 25th, 2015

YNN_MariK

We’re starting off today with some time-critical news.

A new Yuri Anthology out of Europe is down to the last few days of crowdfunding and they can really use our support –  Freya Anthology is planning on being 300 pages as a physical book. I’ve already chipped in for a copy – they are shipping anywhere in the world. and they are getting very close to their goal, so if you can, this sounds like a great way to support Yuri globally!

Time is running down on registration for the upcoming Queer & Comics conference in NYC, May 7-8. I’m going to bang this drum every single chance I get for the next two weeks. If you are into LGBTQ comics and can make this ground-breaking event, do! Alison Bechdel and Howard Cruse are keynote speakers. Really…do not miss this opportunity!

Roundup from the Field

YNN Correspondent Alex has this to say that – the creator of Kuttsukiboshi, Primastea before he worked under that name, also has made a very very short and simple animation Docchi mo Maid (どっちもメイド); “silly, stupid, with Yuri in it (a little bit, gags and fanservice).” It appears to be on YouTube at least in part.

From YNN Correspondent Day, “Triage X (トリアージX) isn’t a Yuri anime, but (and unsurprisingly), it does have some eau de Yuri in the mix. I’d describe the show as Weiss Kreuz but with medical professionals/assassins swapped for the florists/assassins of WK, and with a whole hell of a lot more boob/butt/crotches fanservice. In episode three, a rival, unassociated assassin, Chikage, is introduced, only for the lead female, Mikoto, to befriend her in school (without, of course, either cottoning on to their assassin identities). The two get a bit touchy-feely-gropey, there’s a brief fantasized shot of them embracing while naked, probably orgasming, and some blushing. Other Yuri-type content includes subtext between one of the female doctors and her assistant, as well as the same female doctor and a couple of minor character nurses. The show itself is garbage, although I’m enjoying it a horrific amount – tons of fanservice interspliced with stabbing, shooting, burning, etc. of sleazy bad guys (and its all men so far who’ve been slaughtered in various manners). I will add the caveat that there are some threats of sexual violence in it, although the would-be rapists all get the crap kicked out of them and are killed before they can follow through on those threats.”

Senior YNN Correspondent Grisznak has this exciting news to share; Polish company Kotori announced that they have the license for Iono The Fanatics. First volume will be published in August, the second in October in Polish.

YNN Correspondent Jin wanted to make sure we all knew that Hanamonogatari: Suruga, has some Yuri feelings and little to no fan-service.  Jin says, “There was indeed Yuri feeling and tension, also I saw the ending credits even featured a type of classic Yuri tribute as a mini story.  For some who were not aware they may find it interesting.” The series is currently available on Right Stuf as a Blu-ray set.

I want to recommend the not-Yuri, but exceedingly excellent read, The Evil Queen, by Jessi Sheron. I picked up a copy at MoCCA and found it so good, I asked my wife to read it. (You know I never do that.) She also thought it excellent. Luckily for all of us, you can read the whole thing as a webcomic on Jessi’s Tumbr.

We’ll end up with this analysis of  Yuri Kuma Arashi which was an excellent read and wholly at odds with my feelings. A fantastic and very positive perspective!

Next week we’ll be back with a pile of upcoming Yuri releases, so see you then!
