My Little Pony ~ Friendship is Magic, Season 1, Disk 4 (English)

December 17th, 2013

mlpfim1And here I am, at the final disk of My Little Pony ~ Friendship is Magic, Season 1, where I watch episodes with commentary, laugh at in-jokes I don’t know, but can figure out and sit through a fabulous musical grand finale episode. But I can’t enjoy that episode, because the one before it is the most hackneyed, miserable plotline ever…the dreaded “surprise birthday party” plotline, which I loathe and despise. You know the one – “All my friends are avoiding me, so they don’t like me any more, oh wait I forgot it was my birthday and they were throwing a surprise party! Tee hee!” GRRRRRRR.

Yes, it makes perfect sense that they chose the “surprise birthday party” story for Pinkie Pie, but every time I read or watch that stoopid story, my teeth grit harder. The lesson of that dumb episode is not “you should trust your friends and not come up with paranoid fantasies.”

The true lesson of this story is this:  Surprise birthday parties are evil, terrible things, and people should not throw them.

My point was best summed up by Celestia when she, speaking of the Grand Galloping Gala, but more properly of all parties, ever, commented that it was always a terrible night. Yes, exactly.

I have a longstanding agreement with friends and relatives that easiest way to get me to never speak to them again is to throw me a surprise party. ^_^

My Little Pony ~ Friendship is Magic, Season 1, Disk 3 (English)

December 11th, 2013

mlpfim1I’m at that point in my pile o’stuff to review where I’m down to manga I’m less enthusiastic about, box sets of anime and Light Novels, so it’s taking me longer to make my way through things, and some of those things are things I keep talking about over and over. ^_^

So…way back a few years ago, when My Little Pony ~ Friendship is Magic popped up on the scene, I asked you all whether you thought Rainbow Dash was lesbian or not. Obviously, I was being silly. MLP~FiM is a kid’s show, pleasantly free of romantic complications (unless you count Spike’s crush on Rarity.) But as I watched “Suited for Success” on Disk 3, I had an epiphany.

When Rarity tells Rainbow Dash that she’s making her a dress for the Great Galloping Gala, RD’s response is, “A what for the what now?” At which point I looked up from my work computer, laughed and said, “Okay, she’s one of us.” It’s not just that she’s interested in athletic endeavor, is brash and uninterested in finery – it was the complete and total disinterest in/unawareness of the typical rites of, shall we say, more average ponies. Applejack is a tomboy. Rainbow Dash is a lesbian.

I don’t even know if I’m being serious or not, so don’t ask me. ^_^

Dear Brother Set 2 Hits Full Funding in 24 hours on AnimeSols

November 30th, 2013

HappyReiThis weekend, classic anime streaming and crowdfunding site AnimeSols announced a Double-Up weekend in honor of the Thanksgiving Holiday, which is traditionally celebrated by manic buying of consumer goods, as you know.

Along with other series such as Creamy Mami Set 3 and Black Jack Set 2, they launched the second DVD set of Riyoko Ikeda’s shoujo classic, Dear Brother on Black Friday, with a very special deal – every pledge will count double. In the first 24 hours it was fully funded. In 24 hours, 152 donors, $13000+. With 70 days left and a totally reasonable $30 level that gets you the DVD Box, it’s now merely a pre-order.

AnimeSols founder Sam Pinanasky adds, “The enthusiasm we’re seeing during our Black Friday double up promotion is really amazing. Anime fans really want to know that their money is helping bring them more great classic anime and this is the perfect time for that to happen.”

Yuri and Shoujo fans, thank you and congratulations for making this set such a blowout success! Even Saint-Juste is happy. ^_^

Yuri Gift Guide 2013

November 28th, 2013

In honor of the spirit of the season, that is to say, rampant consumerism along with seasonal shifts ^_^, I’ve been putting together a Gift Guide for folks who are Yuri fans for the past few years. (Click the link to see the previous years’ Gift Guides.) Finally, you have a short, simple list with links, that you pass over to your family, and say – “Here, I want this.” ^_^

This year’s list is in no order, just as they come to mind. As usual, feel free to suggest ideas in the comments!

downloadCrunchyroll Subscription

Don’t know what get or what to ask for? This gift is good for anyone, pretty much, especially now that CR has added manga to the mix. There’s bound to be something there for any fan. For as little as the cost of a sandwich per month, you and/or someone you love can access tons of anime, and watch as the selection of manga grows! There’s no real down-side to this gift. ^_^

Kisses, Sighs, Cherry Blossoms Pink by Morinaga Milk

Popular with Yuri fans of all kinds, this high-school love drama is available complete in one volume. Translated by our friend Anastasia Moreno, you can be sure that the girl gets the girl.

This completeset also includes other one-shot stories by Morinaga-sensei that ran in Comic Yuri Hime in the magazine’s early years.

 Whispered Words by Takashi Ikeda

If you or your friend can wait until spring for it, this Volume 1 of 3 will be a great Yuri gift. This silly, then serious, then realistic, then delightful school romance contains every Yuri trope ever…including the one where the girl gets the girl and lives happily ever after. You just gotta wait for it. ^_^

I have every reason to believe that this will be an exceptional addition to every English-reader’s Yuri collection.

Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi (Volumes 1-6) (Volumes 7-12)

Because Sailor Moon changed the world and changed both anime and manga in ways we’re still feeling even now. Because we would not have had Yuri the way we think of it without it, (and you should meet Haruka and Michiru if you have never formally met.)

If you have not yet had a chance to experience the manga (so you can compare it with the upcoming anime) this is a perfect gift to grace your shelves!

Wandering-Son-5Wandering Son by Shimura Takako

This manga is not “Yuri” but has characters that are sexual and/or gender minorities.

This is exactly the kind of book holiday lists are made for. Hardcover, beautiful reproduction. This is a keepsake, the kind of thing you hold on to and re-read over and over.

swbAoi Hana/Sweet Blue Flowers Anime Box Set

I know this was on last year’s gift guide, but just in case you haven’t had the chance to get it yet, this makes a perfect gift for you or a fan close to you who wants to have you over for a watch-a-thon. ^_^

A very slightly idealized story of a girl falling in and out of love and learning to be the person she is.  A terrific story, told be a terrific storyteller.

Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda (Box Set 1) (Box Set 2)

This classic, containing the second Girl Prince to grace anime, is epic in scope, soapy of story, and shiny and tragic and wonderful. Like too-rich chocolates, it’s best savored in small doses. But is definitely should be savored.

When you’re enjoying any anime with a suave, masculine female character, when Sei is being the consummate Takarazuka Top Star, or Haruka is making Usagi blush, remember it was paragon of honor and nobility Oscar de Jarjeyes who set that benchmark – and she has never been bested. (And thanks to AnimeSols, we can look forward to Oscar’s complete opposite – tortured, depressed Saint Juste from Dear Brother, in days to come.)

I don’t have any real coals to offer this year, so I’ll just go out of the pale and suggest that if you’re looking for something good whether it’s Yuri or not, I suggest Attack on Titan. Giving nothing critical away, this is a not-cute or sweet story with characters who have more than one emotion each, which has hooks into the current zombie craze and an interesting storyline. It’s especially good for teens and adults who don’t find typical Shounen Jump-style fighting series to be compelling.

There you have it – my suggestions for 2013. Please feel free to toss in your own in the comments and if any of them really rock, I’ll move them up into the post. Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating. Once again, I am so very thankful to each one of you for reading Okazu, today and every day. ^_^

Freezing Vibration Anime (English) Guest Review by Grisznak

November 13th, 2013

778369299_origIt must be Wednesday, because we have a Guest Review! Even better, we have a brand new Guest Reviewer. I love when that happens. ^_^ Today we welcome Grisznak, who has kindly offered to review something I had never heard of, much less watched. So let’s settle in with some popcorn as Grisznak takes the stage. /applause/

Anyone here remember Freezing? Yes, this series from 2011 with lot of bloo… I mean boob… well, technically, with a lot of boobs and blood as well. Another generic danger to the humankind (this time an unknown monster called “Nova”) and some scanty clad girls with super powers – we’ve seen this lot of times, haven’t we? Usually, in such series we can find some Yuri hints. But was that a good reason to watch? Not this time, trust me. Freezing wasn’t bad a anime – it was a very bad anime. So, why even mention it here? Because it is getting a second season. And, surprisingly, Freezing Vibration (sic!) isn’t THAT bad. After all that what I can say after watching some episodes. Full opinion can be made when this series will be finished. But let’s take a look…

This time our bunch of superpowered girls (called “Pandoras”) arrive in the USA, where group of scientists work on a program that allows turn every girl into Pandora. This project is called “e-Pandora” and you can probably guess that there’s something fishy about it. But before we find what’s going on, some dresses will be torn, some boobs revealed and some blood will be spilled.

There are some major differences between the two seasons. Freezing focused on Satlizer el Brigett, blonde meganekko whose nickname was “Untouchable Queen”. With such a nickname it’s rather easy to predict that character will be touched lot of times.

And most of the series was about that – Pandoras were fighting against each other, girls were doing something that could be called “Strip Fighting” and everyone was waiting until Nova appears.

The second season shows Pandoras on duty – there’s little place for girly fights and arguments,  there is serious business going on.  We have two groups – Pandoras and E-Pandoras. They are different, but they’re meant to cooperate. Of course, it won’t be easy, because E-Pandoras not only have to compete with original Pandoras, but they need to survive deadly experiments their makers are performing on them.

Lot of fights, lot of drama, but what about Yuri? Those who were watching first season already know that each Pandora has her male sidekick called a “Limiter.” To cooperate at full power, they need to perform a “Baptism.” (It amazes me how the Japanese creators use Christian terminology for what is simply sex). Our Untouchable Queen had problems with that and still has, but her Limiter was really the protagonist of the first season. Now he’s in the shadows; he rarely appears and hasn’t much to do. The second season is about girls. And this is good, especially if you’re Yuri fan.

Almost since beginning of the story we can see tension between leaders of both groups – Elizabeth Mably and Amelia Evans. And, this is not the usual love-hate, but rather a much more complicated relationship between two strong women who holds responsibility for their people. Yes, Yuri fans could be happy, seeing Amelia in Elizabeth arms at the end of the fourth episode. Of course, we have lot of groping, boob touching and other fanservice moments in this anime as well. Boys are still there, but they’re merely tools, without much use in the plot.

I’m always curious if they make clothes from some kind of very frail materials in anime. Remember Ikkitousen or any other series like that? Right, those anime where you can perform a punch and the girl’s blouse is ripping apart, often with bra as well. Freezing has same problem –  in almost every battle, participants have to lose some of their clothes. Years ago I found this amusing, today I found it boing… I mean boring. Still, original Freezing had an annoying tendency to mix fanservice with gore. Freezing Vibration has lost some of gore. And it’s good.

With a plot (finally), less gore and some nicely done relationships between characters, this series looks watchable. Still, I’m not calling this anime good – it’s a deep valley between Freezing Vibration and lot of good series. But, if you like to see something action and fanservice-oriented and already watched Ikkitousen, check this out. Of course, you have to break through first season (or just read summary in the web), but some sacrifices always should be made.

Erica here: Funimation is streaming both Freezing and Freezing Vibration online for free (with regional restrictions) so you too can “enjoy” what sounds like it might be some kind of fun.  Thank you Grisznak for the highly amusing review. I’m almost tempted to watch it now…but I expect that will pass. ^_^
