Comic Yuri Hime, October 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年10月号) was a pretty darn good issue!

The cover continues the colorful travel theme with photos, (one blurry one clear, which was a lovely touch) of a beach scene. The water is genuinely outstanding. I love that this looks like it was painted using brush strokes that are visible, even as it is obviously done digitally. Isshiki’s work has been a lot of fun, visually.

“Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata” starts to move forward. Kaori’s illness has paralyzed Shizuru once again, but finally she’s shaken out of her own PTSD, when confronted by Kaori’s little sister who resents Shizuru and the upcoming loss of Kaori deeply. Even as this series comes towards a close in Japanese, you will be able to read it in English, next month as The Summer You Were There, from Seven Seas.

The Scales of Love Arc has begun and Manaria seems dead set on taking Claire away from Rei. As a commoner and Claire’s maid, Rei has no way to fight back and is, apparently throwing herself recklessly into the monster hunt before the festival. Things are tense in “Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou.,” written by Inori and illustrated by Aonoshimo. So, so good.

Keyyang’s “Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru” has gotten a bit more serious. Faced with the near impossibility of getting a job without a degree, Hi-chan is thinking of taking a major step and going back to school. What will this do to their idyllic life?

“Onna Tomodachi to Kekkon Shitemita,” by Usui Shio is also taking a turn for the serious. Now that Kurumi and Ruriko are settled in, an old acquaintance has turned up and is causing chaos for the pair when she goes missing!

The last pieces are put into place in Shiho’s back story, in “Sasayakuyouni Koi wo Utau” as Himari learns that Shiho has been competing with – and singing for – a dead girl, for years. This was a very moving chapter. Shiho’s still a jerk, but I’m now inclined to be a little bit forgiving, because she’s 15, ffs.

Boots drop all over the place in Miman’s “Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto Desu!” Sumika and Nene have a long, long, long overdue talk about important stuff that needed to get said. As the chapter ends, we can see the dark cloud of confrontation around the corner approaching. Story aside…as the adult in the room, how does Mai not see any of this going on?

I’m starting to wonder if “Natsu to Lemon to Overlay” has a plot. Like Yunimaru, I cannot see the end game at all, for Konno’s playing around and having fun before, presumably, dying, maybe, but we can’t tell?

“Odoriba Skirt ni Naru” hit me really hard for randomreasons this chapter. We’ve dealt with Kiki’s body image issues, and this time we deal with Michiru’s strong objections to being seen as cute. CW for an attempted assault on a child. 

“Lonely girl ni Sakarenai” starts with a happy, cheerful school trip and everyone ganging up to figure out how to support the other couple in the group, but ends in crisis.

A few new one-shots and features, comic essays and the usual columns made for a really chunky 500 pages of Yuri manga and a very good issue. ^_^

The November issue has hit shelves in Japan and I’m waiting impatiently for it to arrive at my Kinokuniya.^_^

Comic Yuri Hime, September 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年9月号) offers some dramatic Yuri as the seasons turn.

In “Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru” by Kiiyang, our protagonists suddenly are confronted with the fact that summer doesn’t last and neither do summer jobs. What will they do for money during the off-season?

In “Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou.,” Rae is confronted by the fact that, even with her power levels and skills, she’s no match for Manaria. Will she lose Claire to her rival?

The SS Girls get together for a strategy session, (but it’s more like therapy, amirite?) in “Sasayakuyouni Koi wo Utau.”

In “Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto Desu!” Nene has had it with the straight-girl combo of Sumika and Kanako. And, frankly everyone has had it with Kanako…except Hime who is increasingly worried about her friend. The boot is about to drop, and damn is it gonna be an ugly one.

Sora and Ayaka spend a last high school summer festival together in “Lonely Girl ni Sakaraenai” and it dawns on us that this story is over and we’re just lingering….which is fine by me, because I don’t want to say goodbye, either.

“Hibiku Koe” by FLOWERCHILD is a meet-weird about two coworkers, one who is masked all the time, and their encounter that takes them to bed together.

A traditional crisis has appeared in the form of a friend with a previous, tenuous, and grasping claim on Ruriko’s affection in “Onna Tomodachi to Kekkonshitmita.”

In “Natsu to Lemon to Overlay” our aspiring voice actress and the woman who has hired her to read her final wishes go on a date…and it is as confusing to Yunimaru as it sounds to us.

Inui Ayu’s “Kyou mo Hitotsu Yane no Shita” wraps up the final chapter and what will be a second volume, as Inui-sensei and Kon-san go to buy matching rings. Congrats to them; my tears are not because I cry at weddings, but because I will miss these fun little snippets of lesbian life. ^_^

As usual, there are many other stories I have read in this volume. It’s a very solid volume with something for folks who like the cute, the sweet, the strange and the adult!

Comic Yuri Hime August 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年8月号) begins with a seasonally appropriate colorful travel image that put me in mind of nothing so much as a beach ball. ^_^

In Takeshima Eku’s “Sasayakuyouni Koi wo Utau” Yori and Himari face a crisis of spending an evening alone together without parental supervision. Of COURSE our good girls are adorably sweet and cute about it. Kisses and embraces are shared and we all smile gently at them.

The air conditioning is broken and Ruriko proposes that she and Kurumi camp out in the living room in “Onna Tomodachi to Kekkonshitemita” by Usui Shio. Sleeping together in a way that they do not normally do, has Kurumi thinking about their lives together and finding it…nice.

Three for three on sleep-cutes this month, because Haru and Hinoto wake up extra early on their day off and decide to walk around their new home town while it’s empty and dark. They watch it wake up. After breakfast, they head back home for a sleep until noon. I adore this series by Keyyang. I’m all in for people just being happy together. Please…tell me more about your little town and how cute those pajamas are and how yummy breakfast is!

Ru’s “Natsu to Lemon to Overlay” is leaning hard into the “what is her motivation for dying?”  Konno-san is a mystery, but I hope we’re not being oversold on this as a plot.

We continue to wallow with Nene in “Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto Desu!” Her relationships with Sumika and Youko are starting to spiral together. Youko has clearly set them all up for revenge on Sumika, but I hope Nene and Kanako can maybe reverse the trajectory, if only they’d have a conversation.

Aaaahh! “The Scales of Love” arc has begun and Manaria-sama has arrived in “Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou.”! I love Aonoshimo-sensei’s casually boyish Manaria, taking down Rod with a “snap.” I’m ecstatic that this manga has gotten to Volume 2 of thr novels. At the very least, I hope we get through the Revolution arc. I say that, but tomorrow the 5th volume of the Light Novel lands on your digital devices and I cannot *wait* for you to read it! So I really mean- I hope that we get every last piece of this story. Every side thought, every reversed perspective. Everything.

Utatane Yuu’s “Odoriba ni Skirt ga Naru” moves past trauma into training! Michiru and Kiki have a long way to go. This issue, they discover how long that road will be.

Sacred Dance by Miko Yuri wasn’t on my bingo card, but…now it is, with “Tsugai Miko no Nijimusubi” by Nanaji Yuuki.

Inui Ayu visits Kon-san’s family in this issue of “Kyou mo Hitotsu Yane no Shita.” In-law visits are fraught, but we are reminded that so is visiting one’s own family. ^_^;

Ohi Pikachi gets a little personal in this issue of “Pillow Talk ha Fuku wo Kite.” ^_^

As always, this is only part of what I read. I’m so excited for the Scales of Love arc, honestly the rest of the magazine could be crap and I’d be happy, but along with cute girls and cute women doing nothing and sex-focused stuff, there’s a lot of strong stories in here and enough to satisfy mostly all Yuri fans. Needs a little more action. And sports. ^_^

For a magazine with a big ending, Comic Yuri Hime July 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年7月号) left me feeling very hopeful.

The cover sets the mood. Instead of nightscapes and urban decay, our two travelers find themselves in a flat plain, accompanied by a horse who is calmly grazing. Colorful prairie flowers and a colorful sunrise greet them, as they search for love and themselves. As an issue that came out after the Summer Solstice in this hemisphere, it’s pretty spot on for mood.

We get a three-page spread on the upcoming anime, followed by a powerful and potentially heartbreaking chapter of “Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto desu!” by Miman. Having been given character designs for the anime, Sumika is now blonde…and hopelessly in love with Kanako. We know it’s hopeless – or, at least, we know it ought to be hopeless. There’s some rough times ahead for these two. I’m more invested in them than I was in Hime and Mitsuki, too, which means this is a little torturous. ^_^; Sumika’s a dumbass, but I like her. I’m still holding out for a concerted revenge plot against Youko.

Tsuama’s “Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata” is moving in an unexpected direction, as Shizuku is taking her new understanding of Kaori’s situation and actually trying to be a better person.

I’m really enjoying “Natsu to Lemon to Overlay” by Ru, purely for it’s unusual setup, but I’m hoping the story goes somewhere interesting, as well.

And then we come to the final chapter of “Kaketa Tsuki to Donuts” by Usui Shio. On the one hand, I would have been content to just pass time with Hinako and Asahi for longer, but the story had come to a natural conclusion. Hinako had worked out the nature of the weight she was carrying and, in doing so, has shed it. Asahi has determined to try living for herself for a change.  Usui-sensei nails the ending. That’s all I’m going to say for now. When the final volume comes out in English, we’ll talk more. ^_^

In “Onna Tomodachi to Kekkonshitemita” also by Usui-sensei, Kurumi gets to see the stresses inside someone else’s marriage, as her sister-in-law calls for some tea and sympathy.

Keiyang’s “Kimi to Shiranai Natsu ni Naru” settles down for a quiet chapter with Haru and Hi-chan settling into their new beachside town life.

Inui Ayu takes a look at her and Kon-san’s different comfort levels with public displays of affection in “Kyou mo Hitotsu Yane no Shita.”

As always there are many other manga in the magazine, some of which I read and some of which I did not.  There are two 18+ manga, Citrus+ is still running (and characters are still smiling) and many other new and continuing series.

The August issue is already on Japanese shelves, and hopefully will be on mine shortly, because “Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou.” is moving into my favorite arc – “Love Scales.” ^_^
