Yuri Anime: Maria-sama ga Miteru OAV 1, Vacation of the Lambs

December 17th, 2006

Buy the raw, untranslated collector’s (and therefore more expensive) edition of the Maria-sama ga Miteru OAV, Volume 1: Kohitsujitachi no Kyuuka (Vacation of the Lambs)? What are you, insane?

You betcha. ^_^

The outside has a lovely clear plastic cover with Yumi and Sachiko holding hands, over the actual cover that has a red rose and “La Vierge Marie vous Regarde”, as you can see in the picture above.

Inside is a faux-leather novel cover with the Lillian seal on one side and the text logo for “Maria-sama ga Miteru” on the other, with a very cute leaf bookmark.

There is also a Lillian folder with postcards – original art by Hibiki Reine of Yumi and Sachiko holding hands, of Yumi and Sachiko separately, of the DVD cover and the three rose families from the opening credits.

The DVD cover is, IMO not such a great picture, but it does show a happily embracing Yumi and Sachiko. And for once, the title of the story actually sounds *worse* in French. ^_^ The booklet that comes with the DVD has character designs for all the characters.

I thought it the anime was excellent. They kept “Pastel Pure” as the OP, which made me glad, and they managed to actually de-angst what is really the last of the angsty Yumi novels. Yes, they cut stuff out to fit it, and a very few changes were made – but nothing of consequence and nothing that radically altered the story. In general, a very decent adaptation.

My *only* complaint…we don’t get to see/hear Touko play the violin. I wonder why, since we get all the other performances. And I am thrilled no end that Kashiwagi exlpains that Great-Grandmother isn’t infirm, she’s just pissed. (Although, you don’t get the full explanation, just a truncated one. )

They definitely upped the touchy-feelyness of the story, leaving in pretty much every embrace and hand/arm holding. There was a moment when Sachiko and Yumi decide to go to the party that was animated exactly the way kiss scenes are done – close up, then the a view from far away, which cued up the “romantic moment” tag in my head. The image stands out in my mind, because the surroundings are animated with a lot of detail and color. It’ll make a nice screencap.

Last night I watched it for the third time (the first straight through, the second for a script check and the third with the seiyuu commentary. The seiyuu present are Ueda Kana (Yumi), Itou Miki (Sachiko) and Ikezawa Haruna (Yoshino) and it’s pretty much like sitting in the middle of them as they watch what’s going on (or don’t, when they get distracted.) They wander in an out of talking about the characters as if they were real, as if they actual are the characters, and as if they are just three women sitting around watching an anime. ^_^ They discuss Mount Fuji, gasp and squeal at key points (point out the service) and laugh about random events in the story. It’s a very relaxed, not at all profound, commentary – and the bits I was able to follow were thoroughly enjoyable.

As is usual for an OAV, it’s better quality animation than the TV series. And if you check out the credits a few familiar names scroll by – including Bee Train. The character designs are strong – stronger than I had feared. I was particularly concerned with Sachiko because of the DVD cover picture, but she looks great throughout. And when the Yamayurikai all show up in day clothes, they somehow managed to convey their personalities in what they are wearing. (I *will* be annoyed about one of the character designs for the next OAV, be warned. Oh…and what was with Yuuki’s hair??)

The characters all remain charming. Three times I’ve watched it, and three times, I’ve grinned like a loon at the end.

As I always say, this series will never be half as popular with the lowest common denominator as Strawberry Panic, which is yet another good sign that Marimite is really quality in every way. ^_^

Yuri Manga: Maria-sama ga Miteru, Volume 6

November 16th, 2006

Maria-sama ga Miteru, Volume 6, Valentine’s Gift, Last Part, is simply chock-full of Yuri love-love, as it covers the second half of the Valentine’s Day arc. This includes all three of the half day dates with the bouton, and the creepy, yet pity-worthy Sachiko stalker, Mafuyu’s, story. The manga much more closely follows the novels which means, thankfully, no stupid fake cliffhanger as Yumi loses sight of Sachiko for a millisecond, and much more lovey-dovey ends to all the dates.

The manga begin with a replay of the “Surprise Chocolate” scene from the end of the first half of the arc, at the end of which Yumi and Sachiko agree to go on a half day date. Having agreed to that, Yumi is now completely at loose ends on where to go and what to do. Once that’s settled, we turn to the trials and tribulations of ace cameraman Tsutako and newspaper club president Minako, as they try to snag a good story and photo.

Yumi and Sachiko have a painfully cute date. We get to watch them wooja-wooja at each other as Sachiko talks about not ever fitting in, and enjoy Yumi raging at how unfair it is that Onee-sama is richer, taller, skinnier and more beautiful than she is. Most enjoyably, we can watch Yumi overheat at the thought of Sachiko undressing on the other side of that changing room curtain. ^_^ Yumi hangs on Sachiko romantically as Yoshino shouts “go go!” from behind, as she did in the novel. (Big grin from me on that.)

Next up, we follow Yoshino, as she stalks Rei and Chisato on their date. I am rapidly coming to find Yoshino so adorable that I’m in danger of exploding when she pouts. ^_^ When Chisato pays her a visit and admits that she’s insanely jealous of Yoshino and acknowledges that Rei called her “Yoshino” 5 times, Yoshino really shows how decent a person she is.

Shimako’s date begins at the end of Valentine’s Day, as she and Sei walk out of Lillian together, and Sei thanks her for the cake. Shimako is unaccountably shy about it; Sei takes her hand. Shizuka, at the beginning of the date seems a little cool and far off, but when she gazes at Shimako intimately and says she wants to get to know more about her, Shimako, and this reader’s, heart pounds just a bit. ^_^ Their date is, of all of them, I think the most interesting. But that could be because I find Shizuka a fascinating character. The day ends as Shimako breaks down, for the last time, in Sei’s arms and we get to see her be “big sister like.” Because of the way the characters were portrayed in the anime, this relationship is the hardest to get a bead on, but looking back now, its easy to see that of all the soeur relationships we see in the Rose Mansion, Sei and Shimako are very much like real sisters.

The last story covers Mafuyu, the girl who has admired Sachiko since kindergarten and follows her as she hides the red card for the Valentine’s Day treasure hunt. Mafuyu is much less a creepy stalker in the manga than she is in the anime and WAY less creepy than in the novel, where she was downright creepy. ^_^ The whole story reads more like a tragic love from afar than anything else.

I just started reading the 17th novel of the series last night, so stepping this far back to the 6th novel was well…novel. Watching how unsure Yumi is “back then,” knowing how much more confident she is “now,” is interesting. And kind of charming. Yoshino is da bomb, and Shimako remains the most mysterious character – and a fitting companion for both Sei and Shizuka, in this volume.

Of the Maria-sama ga Miteru manga volumes, this one has most closely followed the novels. And, as a result, I’ve liked it best. ^_^

Maria-sama ga Miteru Drama CD 9: Itsushika Toshi Mo

August 3rd, 2006

For my last review before Otakon (Yuri Panel on Friday, Aug.4, 9PM, Panel Room 3 – don’t miss it!) I decided to write about something that I’ve been saving for a special occasion. Itsushika Toshi Mo, the ninth Maria-sama ga Miteru Drama CD, fits the bill nicely.

This drama CD covers the events of the 8th novel, Itoshiki Toshitsuki, often translated as The Loving Times. This is the story of Graduation Day at Lillian Academy, from the varying points of view of Youko, Sei and Eriko, the now-former Rosas Chinensis, Gigantea and Foetida.

We get to listen in as they reminisce on how they met, how they formed their friendships – and rivalries. How Youko is perfectly aware that she can’t stop herself from meddling and how much Sei really has changed over the last year, to Eriko’s fretting about whether Yamanobe is man enough to show up at her request.

Following these reminiscences is the emotionally brutal scene where we listen to Youko’s thoughts as Sachiko, her beloved little sister, breaks down completely on the podium, causing a wave of sobbing throughout the audience and almost making Youko break down.

And, at last, we say good-bye to the three, with pictures, tears, smiles and fond farewells.

This is good shoujo. Really. Emotional without being maudlin, girly without being caricature, and solid, solid voice acting.

Shinohara Emi is universally adored by every group she’s ever worked with – this Drama CD allows her to show some range. Maybe not as much as “Rosa Chinensis’ Greatest Day”, but still. Youko as an eager, energetic middle schooler, Youko as a tired, relieved and slightly stressed high school student, Youko the ever-competent honor student.

Toyoguchi Megumi also has a chance to show some mad voice acting skills. We get a real earful of Sei bored, cold and aloof, compared and contrasting nicely with Sei alive and warm. Of course we also get to enjoy Sei the angry child as well, an added bonus.

Nabatame Hitomi spends most of her time in Eriko’s usual flaky tone, but we get a brief, amusing glimpse of her as Sei’s childhood nemesis, and also a flash of an angry Eriko, something scarier than you’d imagine. ^_^

Thumbs up for the drama, and for lack of melodrama. Just grab some tissues when that Sachiko scene happens….

As I frequently do with Marimite Drama CDs, I find myself listening to this CD with a big, stupid grin on my face. It’s just that wonderful. Another great way to spend a few more moments in the company of truly great characters. And, as I always say, a really fun way to practice your Japanese language listening skills.

Shameless Plugs

May 25th, 2006

My brain is offline tonight.

If you are interested in reading something Marimite-flavored, feel free to wander over to my website “Worldshaking” Fanfic where I’ve uploaded a new Maria-sama ga Miteru fanfiction for this month. The new story is suitable for readers of legal majority in their home country/state/region/town only, but there are plenty of stories there for all ages.

In the meantime, let me also remind you that if you enjoy my writing, a great way to say thank you is to buy a copy of Shoujoai ni Bouken, Volume 1. It’s available on Amazon and on the Yuricon Shop. All proceeds go directly to making more yuri events, books and reviews.

And thank you for your support!

Maria-sama ga Miteru: Drama CD 8 – Itoshiki Saigetsu

April 24th, 2006

There’s a good chance that this, the eighth Maria-sama ga Miteru Drama CD, Itoshiki Saigetsu is my second favorite, coming close after Ibara no Mori/Forest of Thorns.

Considering that this, of all the Marimite stories has the very least Yuri of all, you’re probably wondering “why?” The answer is simple – this Drama CD is hysterically funny.

One of the things missing from the anime for this arc was the low comedy – the slapstick silliness that characterized Yumi’s impression of Rosa Foetida’s apparent waywardness. And the anime also cut Sachiko’s anti-adultery rant which is totally worth hearing, just because it *is* shocking. For a clearer idea of why this is a funny story, you might want to take a look at my review of the novel of the same name, Maria-sama ga Miteru Itoshiki Toshitsuki. It’s a funny novel, and this drama CD has a lot of fun with the goofy mistaken identities and implied sexual misconduct. The CD is also way faster paced than the anime, which worked well for broad comedy.

This disk also includes the story of the graduating Rosa’s party. Funny as hell, even without visuals – and Itou Miki gets to laugh a little harder this time around like she’s supposed to instead of Sachiko’s reserved chuckle from the anime. ^_^

As a silly little fun thing, I took a picture of all the plastic stand-up dolls that live on my work desk that were extras from the first half dozen drama cds. It’s not a good picture – I took it with my phone in poor lighting, but you’ll get the point.

Someone asked me a gazillion years ago for a picture of them. Here it is. ^_^
