We are on the cusp of Pride month and I have to say…this year is going to be amazing. Queer folks world-wide are fired up and ready to stand out and stand up for rights. I don’t usually suggest this, but if you can make a local Pride event…go. Be seen, be heard. Be you.

Yuri Anime

Our top news today is the theatrical release of Revolutionary Girl Utena The Movie: The Adolescence of Utena is coming to North American theaters. Yesterday I wrote up an article with links to theater chains that will be carrying it.  And hint – you can ask your theater if you can have the poster. They’ll only throw it out. ^_^

Coming on August 8 to Netflix is THE RIBBON HERO, a fresh take on Tezuka’s Princess Knight. It looks…good! Extra points for The Phoenix reference in the trailer.

Rock Is A Lady’s Modesty Complete Collection is out this week from Sentai Filmworks!

For folks enjoying Kamiina Botan Fully Blossoms When Drunk on Crunchyroll,  Sr. YNN Correspondent Matt Marcus shared this X post by Wall  who recommends Professor Ken Suzuki’s book on SSM in Taiwan, for  those who Japanese fans who noted that Jinran’s older sister is married to a woman. Via Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean Gaffney,  the series is get a Blu-ray and DVD release in Japan this July.

Yuri Events

In Higashinakano, Tokyo, Japan, at loneliness books, queer Yuri creators Rica Takashima and Morishima Akiko are doing a talk event about Yuri in the 1990s and today, on June 18, from 8-10PM. With Utena in mall theaters, what else could we ask for? Well, this week on Pop Culture Jeopardy, Yuri is was the question to an answer. On Jeopardy. Joshua Bote served the Yurijin well, with the right question, “What Is Yuri?” to a clue in the category “Is That Russian?” that read, “No…It Covers Japanese Media Focusing on Relationships Between Female Characters.” I nearly fainted. Yuri is mainstream. Holy shit.

Akiyama Haru’s Watashi no Blue Garnet, Volume 2 (私のブルーガーネット) is up on the Yuricon Store.

Via publisher Number 9, Yuni’s digital comic Anata Mitai ni, Volume 1 (あなたみたいに) is getting a print volume. This story follows a woman who falls in love with another woman for the first time.

Via Comic Natalie, Asumi-chan and Kocho-chan, Volume 1 (亜澄ちゃんと胡蝶ちゃん) is out. This rom-com is about a selfish girl and a selfless girl who are dating.

Also Via Comic Natalie, in Kareshi no Onna Tomodachi ga Guigui Kuru (Watashi ni) (彼氏の女友達がぐいぐい来る（私に)), Takanashi Mao is seeing a guy who really doesn’t understand her and it’s affecting her. When she meets her boyfriend’s friend, Shiraishi Sayu, she finds her life being pieced back together.

I keep forgetting to post this. Senno Knife has a self-published Yuri manga Carmilla (カーミラ) on his Booth page. This is a girls’ school story based on the classic lesbian vampire novel.

Fans of Ohsawa Yayoi’s Hello, Melancholic! might be interested in a Hello, Melancholic! Saki and Chika Special Ep. (ハロー、メランコリック！-SAKI CHIKA SPECIAL EP-) she put out. You can get that digitally on Bookwalker JP.

Via Matt once again, Iron Circus has JOE THE PIRATE, about Marion Carstairs, b. 1890, who “came out of the womb queer,” & lived life as Joe: WWI ambulance driver, speedboat pilot, lover of Marlene Dietrich.”

I bought myself a present this week of Tille Walden’s graphic novel adaptation of Charity and Sylvia. I really enjoyed Rachel Hope Cleve’s book on this early American lesbian couple and reviewed it here on Okazu in 2015.

Live- Action

Via Olivia on X, a subbed version of a TV show about lesbian life on Nippon TV. This aired in the days leading up to a  Japanese Supreme Court decision about same-sex marriage, while pride celebrations are happening countrywide.

Taiwan Travelogue is slated for a live-action drama! This will be a Japan-Taiwan TV adaptation. I will move heaven and earth to watch this.

Light Novels

Mob Shoujo ga Last Boss Majo o Shiawasenisuru made (モブ少女がラスボス魔女を幸せにするまで) is an isekai about two friends who are reincarnated on opposite sides. Rozelika is determined to make Grace smile again.

Yuri Manga

Yen Press announced the license for Snowmelt and Agapanthus at Anime North!  I reviewed Volume 1 here on Okazu in Japanese in 2024. This is a classic Yuri school story, with likable characters.

Yen is also doing a The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All, hardcover Vol. 2 Numbered Edition Web Exclusive. 

Yuama’s newest story, being serialized right now in Comic Yuri Hime magazine,  has it’s first collected volume.  Tayutau Koi no Chirisai ni, Volume 1 (たゆたう恋の散り際に) is available on Bookwalker JP.

Note: Because shipping from Japan and buying books due to payment processors being hampered by right-wing bullshit is making things more expensive and slower, going forward I’m going to default to Bookwalker JP for Japanese manga links, until I put things on the Yuricon Store. 

Creator Ayukawa Ao on X says that this week Sunday Webry will begin serializing Natori to Shizuha (なとりとしずは), a story about two young women who meet and become close through Judo. May not be Yuri romance, but will be intimate friendship, which is fine by me.

A new series that has been getting some praise and some criticism is Gansaku ni Dai Juuban (贋作の第十番) which runs in Champion Cross. This series is a Yuri mystery about a butch orchestra conductor who pairs with a femme historical musical score analyst in order to recreate the score of Beethoven’s 10th symphony…a score which was responsible for the death of the analyst’s mother. By Kajimoto Reika, the art and story in this are all over the place, but there are also reasonable allegations of AI use in the color pages. That’s a shame because otherwise, the story is fascinatingly too much in a good way.

Sazame to Rio (さざめとりお ) is a story about two women’s lives together. 

Another Yuri manga named after the couple (which does seem to be a trend…) is Mikoto to Rei, (ミコトとレイ」), by Kudo Eru.  According to Comic Natalie, this story about a girl who is chill and a member of the morals committee at school began on social media and now has a collected first volume.

One-shot Gesso by Kurose Yu won a Kadokawa Editorial reward. This short about a girl who paints is on X.com to read for free. Gesso is the medium one paints on board or canvas as a primer for before painting.

inori. on X.com announced that the German edition of  I’m In Love With The Villainess, Volume 2  from Dokioco “will be released as a Deluxe Edition featuring the complete second part and a new cover by Hanagata-sensei.” inori.-sensei also added that she has written a bonus story for this edition!

About to give up, You meets Aoi, who encourages her to open a shop. Various customers come to “Sun Maid” with various wishes: A bride who pursues perfection, a young man who admires stiletto heels, a girl who is devoted to what she loves…” “Custom-made magic cannot be broken even at midnight.” This is available on Bookwalker JP. I’ll add that to my reading queue. ^_^

The extraordinary Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāngzǐ has won the International Booker Prize. The NY Times utterly failed to make it make sense, but Waterstones on X summed it up beautifully, “A metafictional triumph blending a queer love story with both intimate and sweeping reflections on colonialism, culture and complexities of translation.” Here is a translation of translator Lin King’s acceptance speech.

Warsaw, Poland has just recognized its first same-sex marriage after an EU ruling that they must recognize marriages from other EU countries.

Last up, you know how I love girl gang stories. One of the three great series that will never die is YajiKita Gakuen Douchuuki. It’s not explicitly gay, but Kita is a chick magnet. Today I realized that the newest iteration of the series is YajiKita Isekai Douchuuki (やじきた異世界道中記) , which is to say the cast of this modern-day Taiga Drama have all been sent..to another world. Outstanding. ^_^

On May 28, Yume in Brooklyn, NYC will hold a Yuri Mart. I’m really hoping to make this just to see what art folks are making. ^_^

May 30 at Shirayuri Women’s College in Chōfu, Tokyo, Cobalt Bunko is holding a 50th Anniversary Commemorative Symposium “Cobalt Bunko 50 Years and Girl Culture“.  How cool is that! Maria-sama  ga Miteru creator Konno Oyuki is one of the speakers.

On May 29-June 2, Manga International Network (MINT) is running a Japanese Manga in NYC series of events that will include Battan, creator of Run Away With Me, Girl. This is a fantastic looking series.

COMITIA 156 is taking place on June 7, at Tokyo Big Sight, and plenty of Yuri circles will be there. Galette WORKS will be premiering Galette No. 38!

On June 8-15 Comic Yuri Hime is running a 20th anniversary art exhibition at the Namba Marui in Osaka.

The next Girls Love Fest is on June 21. It’s back in Keikyu Kamata/Ota Ward Industrial Plaza PiO, Ota Ward, Tokyo. They’ve shared their specific themes and future dates on X.

The 2nd Annual Queer Feminist Zine Fest will be held Sunday, October 4, at A’ Work Sōzō-kan in Osaka Japan. That sounds awesome.

Atelier LILIUM shared a short video of an initial look at this permanent Yuri cafe/reading room in Ikebukuro. They are hosting an inaugural event featuring art by Hirao Auri. They also shared some photos of Inui Ayu dropping by with some signed books at their opening.

New work in English from Thai creator Ratana Satis, Yuri creator X An Assistant with Zero Experience Vol.1 is up for pre-order. The site says that the book will begin printing when they hit 200 orders.

In English we have a new license from Yen: Contract Sisters, “Kasane Hayafuji cannot live without making trips to a certain eatery in order to see Aoyama, a waitress working there. But the next thing she knows, Aoyama comes to her with a “sister contract”…?!” 

Via Yuri Navi, we have “Cafe Lily no Madobe Nite” (カフェーリリーの窓辺にて) a stylish one-shot by Tsuma Bokuto that has run in the July issue of Asuka magazine. You can read it in Japanese on Comic Walker.

Yuri Anime

Revolutionary Girl Utena is getting a theatrical release in the US! I first saw it on the big screen at the Japan Foundation in NYC. It’s worth seeing that way.

Manga Mogura on X offers up this trailer for the upcoming Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games anime.

Cho Kagura-hime is coming out on Blu-Ray in Japan, according to Sr. YNN Correspondent Matt Marcus. No news yet on an EN release.

The anime for Let Me Fix You is going forward with production, but without FAR, or ButaPro, after accusations of sexual harassment by FAR were made publicly, then retracted. Crystalynn Hodgkins has the detail on ANN.  The subtext of that situation is extremely loud.

Once again GL Bunko is offering a Light Novel by inori on US Kindle! Furimukinasai, Watakushi ni! Volume 1 (振り向きなさい、わたくしに) has Japanese text, but the translation tool on Kindle makes it a snap to read. This is the first volume of the sequel to I’m In Love With The Villainess, starring twin Aleah. Via Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean Gaffney, Tokyopop has licensed Hiraeth Remained by Nitamoto. “Sanayama Kazura, a girl who just wants to be loved, discovers that the girl she had been spending all of her money on to look her way has betrayed her. In her moment of despair, she is approached by Yoshibe Kinka, who asks if she would like to die with her.”

Chinese Baihe News

Baiheverse has two announcements this week!  Have No Fear, Shijie’s Here!, is”a xianxia transmigration story created by the independent manhua creator CantNameThings.” The first 10 chapters, along with all future extra chapters, will be completely free to read.  I’ll try to make time for this.

They also have announced the long-awaited collaborative work with nihaohaohaojun, Long as We Have Loved. The synopsis for this reads, “Years later, after another call from her mother about getting married, Zhou Ruoheng couldn’t help but think back on her school days—how, once upon a time, there had been someone she loved.”

Yuri novelist 九夏／Irene309 says on X that they were interviewed by Litmus  magazine about Idol Yuri and several of their novels. They go on to say that they are glad that there can be this kind of exchange across oceans. This interview is in Chinese, but hopefully I’ll be able to find and read it one day. 

Korean GL News

Via GirlsLoveInfo on X, Korean GL comic, The Wingless White Angel (하얀 천사에게 날개는 없다: 타락 소녀) “follows a bullied girl who meets someone who feels like an angel… but is she salvation or something darker?” This will premiere this month on Lezhin Snack. I’m guesssing that this is shorter form comics.

Thai GL News

Thai GL novel, 4 Elements: The Earth by Salmon, which was made into a live-action drama starring AppleMim, is getting a Japanese translation as 4 Elements: The Earth（フォーエレメンツ：アース）.

Japanese Yuri News

Urusekai Picnic (裏世界ピクニック) manga, Volume 16 is getting a May 12 release in Japan and Square Enix holding a release commemoration fair, with extras at every retailer.

Galette WORKS is releasing GALETTE ILLUSTRATION BOOK 06 on 6/6! Fun with numbers. ^_^ Check their website for purchasing links. 

Here’s a classic lesbian pulp-style Yuri novel on Bookwalker JP – Hannari Yuri-iro Onsenkyou (はんなり百合色温泉郷). Mio loses her job and home and ends up working at an onsen…where she and the landlady start a steamy affair. The description warns that there are “lesbian scenes between women.” I actually grinned reading this description.

Via Yuri Navi on X, we have  Koushaku Reijō No Rouraku Misshon ~ Maou To No Seiryaku Kekkon Ga , Jinrui Saigo No Kirifuda Desu ! … ~Tsu Te , Maou Ga Onnanoko No Baai Wa Dousureba Ii No Desu Ka ! ? (公爵令嬢籠絡ミッション～魔王との政略結婚が、人類最後の切り札です！…って、魔王が女の子の場合はどうすればいいのですか！？) is a ridiculously titled story about a young noble sent to seduce the Demon King to save humanity, only find her target to be is a Demon Queen. I’m definitely going to read that nonsense. ^_^

Via YNN Correspondent Roxie, Dance of the Butterflies is “a WLW psychological thriller visual novel with 4 yurious love interests… and no choice that comes without a cost.” This was created by a Vietnamese studio, Parapuro. Wishlist it on Steam!

Studio Lightbulb on X is working on Tsurugaoka no Nanafushigi (鶴ヶ丘の七不思議) “a science fiction x yuri feature-length free ADV”  about a beautiful girl who saves beautiful girls. This is in production, an we’ll keep an eye on it. ^_^

One of the most amazing things about doing the weekly report these days is that we almost never have no Yuri news anymore.  Since I took last week off, get ready for a multi-week deluge of Yuri News! ^_^

Yuri Anime

This season has -thus far- given us two top-tier Yuri anime.

A Hundred Scenes From Awajima, based on creator Shimura Takako’s manga about  girls at a famous all-female musical revue troupe school, will take us in and out of several generations’ drama.

Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk has made a splash with Yuri fans. This travelogue, product endorsing alcohol advertisement with college age lesbians is way popular.  Apparently, there was some kerfuffle with some viewers making straight ships for characters online, and the creator, Hey, came on to X to confirm that they consider this a GL series. This fills me with a happy glow, and sadness for all those series in the past that were clearly Yuri, but the creators were like, “you can see it if you want, I guess.” Times sure have changed for the better!

HIDIVE is bringing back Blue Drop! For fans who were not here in the 00s, let me give you a quick rundown. Blue Drop anime is a pretty good anime set in the past of the Blue Drop manga, which was weird and decent, then got awful enough that I didn’t even bother reviewing Volume 2, then had a decent Drama CD Lovers Side and a very good Drama CD, Enemies Side. ^_^  Because this is a series by Yoshitomi Akihito there are many uncomfortable-making features. Age gaps are gappy, teachers are literally alien, consent is canonically non-existent, and other potential icks. But the anime is not the manga and is full of intensity and longing and a VERY SYMBOLIC ship breaching out of the water. Just…go watch it.

Seven Seas wants you to know that The Delinquent and the Transfer Student, Volume 1 is up for Pre-order now! I started to read that years ago and forgot to continue, so I’m excited about reading it in English. ^_^

Kadokawa’s CandleA Yuri imprint is out there banging the Yuri drum. sono.N’s new series Hoshi no Taion, Meguru Yume(星の体温、巡る夢) is an adult age gap romance between a woman in her 20s and a woman in her 40s. (It can’t work – she won’t get your music references. ^_^;) Read it free in Japanese on Comic-Walker.

Yodokawa has a new series on Comic Walker as well, Neko ni Hakuchou, Hotaru ni Koban (猫に白鳥、蛍に小判). According to the author, this is a story about “a runaway girl in love and the adult who is swayed by her.”

KadoComi on X has…are you ready?… an actual sports Yuri manga! I am so happy, I could scream.  Slow Step (スロー・ステップ！) is about a baseball pitcher who is recruited to her new school’s handball team. Via ThaiHyper on X, Thailand’s smash-hit GL novel *Cranium クレイニアム* manga adaptation now available for early release on Renta!” Episode 1 is free, with 4 chapters available now. “A small plane crashes in the countryside of central Thailand, killing all 15 people on board. Japanese store Surugu-ya has created a Yuri page, with suggestions for games, manga, novels, a short history of Yuri and books with “Yuri-ish elements.”  Melonbooks also has a new Yuri Recommendations Feature on their socials. This…is a new trend I like. ^_^

Yuri Light Novels

Found on BookWalker JP, Kimi no Kyoushitsu ga Eien no Nemurinitsuku made (君の教室が永遠の眠りにつくまで). This is a school horror Yuri romance that sound super intense. Last time I found a cool Yuri LN on Bookwalker JP, J-Novel Club went and licensed it. Let’s see what magic will happen this time. ^_^

Yuri Visual Novels and Games

Studio Élan and Ebi-hime announce that Our Home, My Keeper is out now, on Steam and Itch.io. “This is a fairytale-inspired yuri visual novel full of magic. Follow Paige, a struggling writer, as she moves into a spacious home in the English countryside, where she meets the mysterious Faye.”

Via Sr. YNN Correspondent Ashley, Backtrace: Mechanisms for Forgetting, is a “yuri mystery and puzzle game inside a retro computer. Log on night after night to uncover a story of internet exploits, unexpected friendships, and a chaotic crew of 80s hackers. Solve 2D grid-based puzzles to piece together the mystery. ” has been listed on Steam. Add it your watchlist.

Yuri Live-Action

OUTChina, an LA-based organization that tells the stories of Queer Chinese people, is crowdfunding a Chinese lesbian reality show called LaLaLes: Fluid Love. The trailer is on Youtube and…you know, I’m rooting for this to succeed. 

Sapphic Film Updates has news of several (potentially) upcoming live-action film adaptations of queer books. Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me caught my attention, for sure. I don’t know how many will make it to fruition. A lot of these die in process.

Yuri Events

Yuri Cafe and event space, Atelier Lilium is opening for their trial event, May 16-20 in Ikebukuro, right by the Animate Flagship store. That is a perfect place. I think it’s so interesting that where Ikebukuro began it’s growth with BL on Otome Road, it’s renewal and expansion is coming from Yuri. I cannot wait to visit.

Melonbooks is having a Yuri event/exhibition/pop-up called Prism Garden, May 2-6,2026, with multiple Yuri artists contributing works and merch.  Here’s an example of goods for Takeshima Eku’s Sasayakuyouni Koi wo Utau / Whisper Me A Love Song.

Not a “Yuri” event, but guaranteed great queer artists, the exhibitor list for Toronto Comics Art Festival is live. Manga Maverick Books will be there with great Yuri manga!

 CandleA  on X shared some pictures from the PIAMYFest in April that featured art from Morishima Akiko’s The Single Life,  Yuzaki Sakaomi’s Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna and Hanakage Alt’s Unnie ‘tte Demo Ii Desuka? 

Yuri Merchandise and Pop-up Shops

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All and Muzzle are doing a merch collab through Sugoi Shop France. 

Kadokawa, which is an anime and manga merchandising powerhouse in Japan, is moving hard on the US with MangaSpot stores in major cities. Heidi MacDonald over at The Comics Beat has the details.

Kinokuniya NYC has a limited amount of signboards from inee, when you buy the Kino edition of Love Bullet.
