Yuri Manga
The July issue of Comic Yuri Hime (コミック百合姫) is out in Japan.

June will be a double-barreled festival of Hayashiya Shizuru books –  Hayate x Blade, Volume 16 (はやて×ブレード) and Jigoku NEET (地獄ニート)! More crazy humor in our Yuri, woot.

And just a reminder, Kimino Tamenara Shineru, Volume 1 is now available on JManga.com. Let them know if you like it! (They have a Faceook comments field right on the page itself.)

Snatches of Yuri

Yume Yori Sutekina (ゆめよりすてきな) seems Yuri-ish, like so many MangaTime KR comics these days.

Yurikam ~ Yurika’s Campus Life (ゆりキャン~ゆりかのキャンパスライフ) is actually getting a Volume 3. I weep.

And Kanojyo no Kamera to Kanojyo to Kisetsu  (彼女とカメラと彼女の季節) is appearing on all the Yuri lists, so there must be something to it.

Random News

Kochi Indies Magazine Cover Illustration Contest has been announced.  Western manga artists welcome! Submission Guidelines have been posted on Crunchyroll (follow the previous link)  in English, so there’s nothing stopping you. ^_^

Just what we needed! A new Kekkou Kamen live-action movie is in the works. I hope this one doesn’t suck like the last one did.

Random House/Kodansha is looking for an editor, ability to read Japanese is a must. Ability to live on very few dollars a day will probably also help. ^_^

That wraps it up for this week.

Yuri Manga

Comic Yuri Hime presents Yuri Hime Selection comic on video site Nico Nico Douga.  (This is, of course, in Japanese and you will need to register, but trust me, it’s not hard.)

Kimi no Tame nara Shineru, the Heian period gag Yuri comic translated by ALC Publishing will be released on JManga on the 24th of May.  Bonus features include a short essay on life at the Heian Imperial court (so you know what the heck is going on) and a contest to win a copy of Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book.

We all worked extra hard on this, so we really hope you like it!

Amano Syuninta’s new collection Hatsukoi Kouzoushiki (初恋構造式) hit the shelves this week, as does Hadashi no Chimera (裸足のキメラ) by Ookita Hiroko.

Yuri Anime

The most recent issue of Comic Yuri Hime announces that the second season of the Yuru Yuri anime, Yuruyuri♪♪,  will begin on July 2, 2012 at 2AM Japan time.

RightStuf announced a pared-down litebox version of Maria Watches Over Us, Season 1. All 13 episodes and video extras in a single DVD case, for only $24. If you’ve been holding out because the artbox version was too expensive, this is a heck of an opportunity. That’s less than $2/episode.

Other News

From the “Do Want” file, a series of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha devices in standby mode as accessories. My father’s name means “War Hammer” so I lean towards Graf Eisen. Also, I love how cheerfully he says “Jawohl” when Vita tells him to attack.

Tokyo Disneyland Resort OKs Same-sex marriage ceremonies was the big news this week from Japan. A contact from Twitter tells me that public reaction in Japan has been largely negative. I have every belief that while the reaction to change is negative now, one day soon it will be just another normal day at Tokyo Disneyland. The two key takeaways are that Japan’s LGBTQ community spoke out and were heard and Disney changed their position about outdated gender roles, and will let two brides or two grooms marry. A third major consideration is, while same-sex marriage has no legal standing in Japan, having a location where a public ceremony can take place is a huge first step forward.

Sort of an interesting coda is that the women who started this discussion aren’t actually planning a wedding at Disneyland. ^_^

I just learned about a new Kickstarter from Brian Daniel, Tomorrow Jones. This looks very much like the kind of female superhero we’ve been waiting for. I’ve donated to the Kickstarter myself and have very high hopes for the series. Additionally, when I asked Brian to tell me why this story was worth promoting he 1) answered, 2) politely, 3) with enthusiasm. He passes all my tests, so promoting it I am! There’s only a few hours left and he’s close to the goal, so I really hope a few of you can did in your pockets and help him out.

Happy Children’s Day!

Yuri Manga

In a slightly different take on JManga, Michelle and Melinda over at Manga Bookshelf take a look at some of the Yuri titles on their Off the Shelf: BL GL Bookrack column.

From Dan Kanemitsu on Twitter, The Witches of Andorra, a spinoff manga of Strike Witches by Togeshi Nogami has been released on Nico Nico Channel’s Kadokawa Magazine in English.

The July Comic Yuri Hime  (コミック百合姫) is up for pre-order. It will be released on June 18th.

My Pure Lady, Volume 13 has a story about an affair between two women. No clue yet about quality and I’d guess not a happy ending.

And there’s a new Yuri anthology on the block, Yuri Anthology – dolce (百合アンソロジー dolce). The name alone leads me to believe it’s by the folks that brought us Feuille, Petale, etc.

The Live Online Yuri Panel last weekend was a total hoot. All 5 parts of the Panel have been uploaded to Yuri Studio channel on Youtube and to a dedicated page on Yuricon. We’ll definitely be doing that again. In fact, we already have a question or two for the next time. Go ahead and send your questions in to us at yuricon at gmail dot com – use the  subject “Yuri Panel.”

Yuri Anime

YNN Correspondent Steven D sent us this kind of amazing news: “I’ve been watching Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos on Crunchroll and it’s with mixed feelings that I bring it to your attention that there is, technically, Yuri in it. For clarification’s sake I say “technically” because they’ve given genders to unspeakable horrors from beyond the stars. Both Nyarlathotep (Nyarko), described by Lovecraft as a “mad faceless god” and never having a consistent form, and Cthugha (Kuko), described by Lovecraft as a ball of living fire, are personified as teenage girls and Kuko is in love with (read: obsessed over) Nyarko (who is in turn obsessed over Mahiro [the boy who suddenly has girls living at his house]). So yeah, the Yuri in the show is the creepy/obsessive kind, though it is used as a mirror for Nyarko’s own creepy/obsessiveness towards Mahiro instead of being just for fan-service. To it’s credit Mahiro’s classmates (because of the inevitable transferring into his class by Nyarko and Kuko) don’t bat an eye at Kuko’s declaration that she’s Nyarko’s wife and Nyarko’s objection towards Kuko’s advances never go into “but we’re both girls so we can’t” territory. Hence mixed feelings. The thing this show’s best at though is draining away the sanity of its viewers.”

For more mixed feelings, I also suggest watching Jormungand on Funmation’s streaming channel. (You will need to register, but that’s all.) Stylistically, it’s just like the manga, so Valmet’s feeling for Koko are intact.

The trailer for the second season of Yuru Yuri anime has gone live. “Mixed feelings” seems to be the anime theme of the day.

Yuri Doujinshi

Steven also wants you all to know about a doujinshi buying service that is importing doujinshi (as opposed to illicit downloads,) called Doujinpress. The stock is heavy on the Yuri. They are based in Sacremento, California and seem to be attending some local events there, if you want to see what they have aside from shopping online. They also have a printing service, which is a cool feature.

Other News

ANN reports a cyber-crane game launched in Japan that charges 100 yen for a go at prizes from Nanoha, Strike Witches, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun, among other Yuri-friendly series through a browser. I’m gonna guess that it’s Japan-only because shipping the prizes overseas would be very expensive. ^_^

There’s this thing called the Aniblog Tourney that pitches various blogs against each other. This week Okazu is one of the blogs and if you aren’t opposed to voting in kind of meaningless polls about such things, please vote for Okazu!

Yuri Manga

Mahou to Houko to Kurobuchi (魔女とほうきと黒縁メガネ) seems a Hakamada Mera-esque story about a loli and the glasses-wearing girl she likes.

Tsubomi volume 18 (つぼみ) will be on sale in June. Joining the lineup is bb-sensei, who brought us A Channel. As you might imagine, I’m just thrilled. -_-;

I’ve mentioned this before here, but Eden of Xeno, a Yuri-themed online doujinshi magazine, also has a blog by the CEO, Nakayoshi Tomino, (who is a really swell person, btw!)

Other News

Well, it’s official. The audience of Yuri Danshi is the editor-in-chief of Comic Yuri Hime. They’ve launched a Yuri Danshi Character Song and Drama CD as a deluxe edition of Volume 2, with a web page for the series. That explains that.

Speaking of “that explains that” YuruYuri is doing a woman-only event on May26 (oh, sorry, “girl”-only…) But it’ll be streamed live online for male fans of the series. I know I’m cynical, but I’d put money down on this being mostly attended by the female staff of Ichijinsha publications, roped into going to this and being streamed for creepy guys to watch online. I mean, seriously.

ANN’s Zac Berstchy sat down with the CEO of Viki.com to get the full story on the crowdsourced legal fansub site. Read it here. For the record, I’d love to see them get Candy Candy too, but does he know about the legal baggage that comes with the series? Not sure. ^_^

In other news, NHK World Radio has an English-language segment on the Gold Ring manga, collaboration between Qais Sedki and Japanese manga artist team known as Himekawa Akira. The interviews were set up by my friend Komatsu-san and I hope you’ll all give this a listen. I really hope that the English-language edition of this becomes available soon, so you can all read this shounen fighting manga based around the sport of falconry.

In keeping with this week of Moribito-based reviews, I learned that Moribito, Guardian of the Spirit was also translated into Italian. And, Italian writer Massimo Soumaré includes Moribito in his discussion of Asian horror in a two-part article: Part 1 and Part 2. (I also learned that this is not, technically, the first volume of the series, it’s the second, but the first isn’t a Balsa story. And that there’s a Balsa cookbook!)

Big news from Japan yesterday. Manga artist, BL pioneer and one of the Hana no Showa 49 group, Moto Hagio, will receive Japan’s highest civil award, the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon this year. She is the 14th manga artist – and the first female manga artist – to receive this award.

Yuri Manga

Big news, from Comic High magazine, Morinaga Milk-sensei will be launching a new Yuri manga titled Gakuen Porichi. (学園ポリーチェ) It’s Yuri, it’s School, it’s Police!” says the short write-up on the Comic High website.

The Mawaru Penguindrum Fabulous Anthology (輪るピングドラム ファビュラス・アンソロジー) has pages filled with names you’ve come to know and love, like Morishima Akiko, Sakamoto Mano, Hoshino Lily (the very same Hoshino Lily who did the fabulous still art for the series) and others.

ALC Publishing has just wrapped up the the (grueling!) work of translating, adapting and editing Kimi no Tame nara Shineru – and threw in an essay to provide context for those of you not familiar with Heian Japan, for good measure. I’m going to say something about this series I *never* say about a 4-koma…it’s laugh-out-loud funny. Erin did a stellar translation job and even the letterer is throwing himself into this one with vigor! When it’s released on JManga, I hope you’ll purchase it, because this may well be the most amazing translation job *ever*. ^_^

Yuri Event

Next weekend, April 29, I will be doing the first-ever live online Yuri panel. I’ve done my best to come up with a time that is most accessible globally. Check out the details of the event on Yuricon and send in your questions or come to the event with a question or two. I hope to see you there.

Yuri Games

Michael H wanted to let you all know that Magical Diary, an indie game from Hanako Games, has some Yuri in it! He says “The female protagonist has a grand total of 5 potential love interests in the game and two of those are female. Therefore I think it would be relevant to Yuri fans.  I found the Virginia romance path in particular to be especially interesting.” He also thinks the writing is quite good, especially for an indie game.

YNN Correspondent Mara has been following the progress of the Yaneura no Yuri Rei game and notes that it now has shipped. (He also points out that two of the artists he follows on Deviantart are working on a Yuri webcomic called Picture This.)

 Other News

Maria-sama ga Miteru ~ Farewell Bouquet (マリア様がみてる フェアウェル ブーケ) is now up for pre-order, and will be hitting shelves next week.

Either wall space is at a premium or people are far, far more delusional that we previously presumed, because waterproof Yuru Yuri and K-ON! posters are available in Japan, so you can stick them up in your bathroom.
