YNN Breaking News: Maria Watches Us/Maria-sama ga Miteru News

September 9th, 2010

Today’s post is an early bit of linkblogging, a pre-Saturday mini YNN report, if you will.

Yesterday we had some breaking news from Right/Stuf Nozomi. From their press release:

RightStuf/Nozomi Entertainment Streams Maria Watches Over Us  Season 1 at http://www.YouTube.com/NozomiEnt

They also present Q&A with creator Oyuki Konno at http://www.mariasama.rightstuf.com

Also, from the world of Maria-sama ga Miteru, here’s a whip with which to flagellate ourselves: Those folks who are seeing the Maria-sama ga Miteru Movie in Japan will receive a pile of commemorative items, including a clearfile and a “Secret Episode” book! I’ve already checked the flight costs and man, if it weren’t highway robbery, I’d so be there to see the movie. Thanks to Komatsu-san for the tip on this.

Appropo to nothing, here is a incendiary post by David Welsh, in which he calls out those folks culpable in the lack of critical respect given to Moto Hagio and other female writers (including the crime committed by A Drunken Dream and Other Stories‘ own publisher of saying “this isn’t like other shoujo manga – it’s not crappy.”) I contributed a confrontational comment and am waiting to be called sexist for it.

Yuri Anime

I still haven’t bothered to figure out what it’s about, but Tamayura is on all the Japanese Yuri lists, and Ogata Megumi is playing one of the character’s mothers, which is all I need to get to me to watch. It’s by the same staff that did Aria, which might help convince some of you. :-)

Yuri Manga

The next wave of Yuri Manga from the Tsubomi anthology is on the way! Kono Kutsu ha Shirimasenka? by Mizutani Fuuka, has an October street date.

Comic Lily Plus, Volume 2 the “other” Yuri quarterly anthology, also has an October release.

Actually, there’s going to be a veritable Yuri pileup of manga in October. So much in fact, that I’ll be talking October releases all month. Let’s just do one more today…Utena-inspired Shitsurakuen, Volume 4 is also a-coming in October.

…Okay, one more. ^_^ Here’s one for the gender-switch fans here. Trans Gals is, apparently, an actual anthology about, according to YNN correspondent Erin S., CIS women who have been transformed/de-aged into girls, instead of yet another teen gender-switch comedy. If one of you gets it, I’d love to have a guest review!

Erica In and Around the Internets

I’ll be part of a Yurilicious blogtalk radio show, starring myself, host Allaine and co-host and Yuri Fanfic author Dreiser for an “Anime-ted” discussion about Yuri Fanfic on Femmslash4Fans. The show will be broadcast on Thursday, September 16 at 10PM (EST, I believe). September will be filled with more Yuri interviews with popular Yuri fanfic authors so bookmark this page! And do drop by for a fun conversation about Yuri fanfic. I know it’ll be fun, because Dreiser and I are old drinking buddies and we always have a good time. :-)

Speaking of the Internet, it was my incredible pleasure to be part of a Manga Out Loud podcast with host, blogger and a person I consider it an honor to know, Ed Sizemore. We discussed…wait for it…moe. You think I’m kidding, but I’m not. ^_^ It was a great conversation and we had a lot of fun. Keep your eye out for this podcast early next week on the above website.

Tomorrow, Sunday, my next post for Hooded Utilitarian will publish. This month I talk about Wonder Woman Day at the Best Comic Store in the country. Wonder Woman is totally on topic for Yuri fans, I think. :-)

Lastly, another chance to pimp for MangaNEXT, because they’ve just added alternative Japanese manga artist Kondoh Akino (AX magazine) to the roster of guests. In the last week, I also had the chance to read this incredible exchange about copyright between ManagaNEXT guest Nina Paley and author Cory Doctorow. It was an amazing discussion that blew my brain out as it tried to expand to be half as smart as either Ms. Paley or Mr. Doctorow. As a result of the exchange, I contacted Ms. Paley, introduced myself and suggested a few bits of reading material for her before she arrives at MangaNEXT, so she understands some of the larger issues that we have in the manga world. She’s asked if she can print my correspondence with her, I gave her my permission, so hopefully, you’ll see that on her website sometime soon, as well.

If you are an aspiring manga artist, doujinshi creator or are just really interested in the history and/or industry of manga and sequential art, ManagNEXT is the place to be this year.

That’s a wrap for this week.

Yuri Manga

Today is “Read Comics in Public Day” and ALC Publishing is celebrating with a contest!

Take a picture of yourself reading any Yuri Manga in public, send us the link to @Yuricon on Twitter, post it on the Yuricon and ALC Publishing page on Facebook or send it to the Yuricon Mailing List, and you’ll be entered to win “I Love Yuri” goods. We’re even giving away one Amazon gift certificate!

Don’t send the picture to me by email, or link to it here. This is a Twitter/FB/mailing list contest only! And by “in public” we do mean where other people can see you, thanks!

Heads up, a Strawberry Panic Omnibus is headed our way in late September! That’s all of the collected chapters of Strawberry Panic, for just over $10 if you pre-order now.

Manga expert Jason Thompson wrote up a very lovely overview of Rica ‘tte Kanji!? and Yuri Monogatari in his ANN Column, “House of 1000 Manga.” Thanks, Jason!

Yuri Anime

YNN Correspondent Eric P. is very excited to share the news that Section 23 has picked up the licenses for Uta-Kata and Taisho Yakyuu Musume/Taisho Baseball Girls. I very much hope you will all support the second title, as it is a truly remarkable series, for many reasons.

Snatches of Yuri

A Day Without Me writes in to tell everyone of a Yuri sighting in hentai series Aki Sora and Aki Sora Yume. ADWM says, “Essentially, to sum it all up: Kana has a crush on Sora, Nami’s twin. Nami offers to practice kiss Kana since Nami looks so much like her brother. Nami gropes Kana, who freaks out, but stops when this happens and apologizes. I was totally flabbergasted at this point, since generally this would just lead to coerced sex or flat-out sexual harassment. Nami continues to try to help Kana get her brother after this, although there is a very heartbreaking kind of moment where she does kiss Kana after Kana passes out from accidentally seeing Sora naked.

Now, the second episode of Aki-Sora: Yume no Naka isn’t being released until November, and it is supposed to focus more on Nami and Kana instead of the sibcons. It could very, very easily become totally trashy at that point. But at the moment I am feeling impressed and a teeny bit hopeful, so I thought I’d pass along the information.”

Other News

Right Stuf/Nozomi Entertainment announces an Azumanga Daioh limited-edition Lithograph available in November.

New YNN Correspondent Jeanette T. writes in to bring our attention to a live-action series called ラブ・コレ~東京 Love Collection Tokyo. It is “not about schoolgirls” and has, as part of the cast a lesbian couple that is portrayed sympathetically – and openly. Here’s a link to the description of the series on Japanese lesbian media site Tokyo Wrestling. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for it.

And while we’re on live-action news, the Maria-sama ga Miteru movie Perfect Book, full of photos and stuff is now available! S.Q.U.E.E.

Event News

For folks in Florida looking for something to do *this* weekend,* YNN Correspondent Katherine H. is running a Yuri panel at Mizucon in Miami on Sunday, August 22 at 10AM. She’s pretty awesome, so please join her and show your support!

New York Anime Festival has not approved a Yuri panel (feel free to write them and ask for one to be included) but I will be part of a LGBT comics and manga panel at the event. That panel is being run by a librarian, and seems to be pretty librarian-filled (including myself) so I’m thrilled to be a part of it. Please take a look at the NYAF schedule and join us for a non-otaku approach to things like BL/Yaoi and GL/Yuri.

This is not Yuri-specific, but I have a friend who runs the comic book store everyone wishes existed somewhere: Comic Fusion in Flemington, NJ. The store itself is not huge, well-lit, with big pluffy chairs, but the people are friendly, welcoming, part of the community in a way that comic book stores never are. They look up and say “hello” when you walk in. :-) On October 24, 2010, Comic Fusion runs Superhero weekend, featuring Wonder Woman Day. If this isn’t of interest to Yuri fans, I don’t know what is! People come by in costume, they do a silent auction to raise money for a local battered women’s shelter…. It’s an awesome thing. I hope you’ll drop by.

Last, but my god, not least, is MangaNEXT.

Let me disclaimer about MangaNEXT. I was on the original organizing committee for this event. I have *very* strong feelings about where it should go and what it should do and have, for this reason, avoided being involved with it up until now. I volunteered this year to provide their social media.

I have of course applied to run a Yuri panel there, and also panels on how to read manga (you know my rant about how manga readers read badly…) and how to talk to publishers. Not sure yet whether any or all of them will be accepted.

But that’s not what I wanted to say. I wanted to tell you that comic LEGEND Lea Hernandez will be there. She will likely be running an intensive comics creation class, from blank paper to full story and if you every thought to yourself that you’d like to be a professional artist, you should really sign up for this.

MangaNEXT also has as guests illustrators Juri H. and Dirk I. Tiede and oh my fucking god, filmmaker Nina Paley. Sita Sings the Blues Nina Paley. I know that most of you do not know why this is an OMFG moment, so just go watch the movie. PLEASE. It’s free, online for FREE. It’s genius. Please, just go watch it. Then take a deep breath, blow your nose and think, “O.M.F.G!” and register for MangaNEXT. ‘Kay? Thanks.

Yuri Manga

Once more on the topic of the Shoujo manga Magazine Yuri Watch, Katherine wants to be the first to let you know that the first volume of Blue Friends is up for pre-order on Amazon JP. Get it while it’s still vaguely Yuri! :-)

Much more Yuri and more satisfying is Mitsue Aoki’s first all-Yuri manga collection, Princess Princess. She was all excited by it, I’m happy for her and for us!

Tokimeki Mononoke Gakuen continues in the current issue of Comic Yuri Hime, and Volume 2 is on the shelves and waiting to be bought! YNN Correspondent Erin S tell us that this is the end of the series, so you don’t want to miss it!

Other News

Because I can’t stop myself from talking about Twitter, here’s a new resource I’ve found for those of you who like to stare at manga artists’ Tweets – Tanbishugi has an enormous lists of Japanese manga artists who are on Twitter. Some might surprise you. If you do decide to follow any of them, try not to be weird, okay? And if any follow you back, remember to say thanks! ^_^

Have I mentioned my recent obsession with manga that passes the Bechdel test? If I haven’t, let me mention it right now, because I need your help. As you may know, I write a monthly column on The Comics Journal’s Hooded Utilitarian. I try to have topics lined up a few months in advance so we don’t get to the last week of the month and I start running around the house screaming OH MY GOD!!! I NEED A COLUMN!

Well, one of my future columns will be about manga that passes the Bechdel test. The rules are deceptively easy: Mo, from Dykes to Watch Out For would only see a movie in which the following three criteria were filled: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. Movies notoriously fail to meet these minimal criteria. Manga, actually, meets and exceeds them. To limit the things I’m talking about, I want to talk about the spirit of the Test, not just the letter. In effect – not just manga that technically meets these criteria, but might be something Mo or I (i.e., an adult, out, lesbian) might be interested in watching/reading.

So, while Strike Witches, or Ooku *technically* fit the criteria…neither really suit the spirit of the Test. (There’s a back story here, which I’ll tell you in the HU article. Trust me for the moment.)

I’m not looking for Yuri specifically, (in fact, most Yuri fails as being girls obsessing about other girls endlessly) if you can think of a manga that features adult women who discuss more than just men (or women) then by all means suggest them in the comments. I have a list already, but your help is much appreciated!

Yuri Anime

Eagle-eyed Nick noticed that Funimation has started streaming the first two episodes of Ga-Rei-Zero, with it’s ambiguously Yuri relationship, on Funi’s YouTube channel.

Yuri Manga

The first combined Comic Yuri Hime is on sale, so don’t miss your chance to see the historical super-combined powers of Yuri Hime and Yuri Hime S! (Admit it, that’s a great image.)

Yuri Hime Wildrose, Volume 6, which hits shelves on the 18th of this month, is available for pre-order.

Snatches of Yuri

Monthly Alive Comic Magazine has announced a new Kämpfer project. No guarantees that it’ll be any better than the last one. ^_^ (Not that the audience wants it to be good. First comment on the ANN forums says it better than I can.)

Other News

You may not be aware of it, but there is an organization for women in the comics industry. Friends of Lulu was founded in 1994 to highlight the achievements and contributions of women in sequential art. It came very close to disappearing this year.

They have pulled back from the brink, and have now opened their 2010 awards nominations to the public. I hope you’ll take a moment to visit the site, consider the issues, nominate and vote for women in an industry which, no matter how many of us work in it, is still seen as a boy’s world for boys.

This is as yet unconfirmed, but a Japanese acquaintance of mine has told me that the Ichijinsha Iris Bunko will no longer be publishing Yuri Light Novels, as they have not been doing well in sales. (She is an author and inquired about submitting a story.) It’s a hard thing to parse, because they weren’t really very good novels, so would they have done better if they had been better? I can’t tell.

One last news item of note: The folks who worked hard to bring Ladies Comics to America under the imprint of Aurora Comics have started up a new venture. Manga Factory’s first project is a tour to Japan crafted especially for fujyoshi and their friends. The tour will include options for a Takarazuka show in Tokyo, a visit to a Butler Bar, and a drag show, so if you’re interested in cross-dressing/gender bending, this is probably the tour you’ve been waiting for. Of course there will be other otaku must-visits, including Otome Road in my beloved Ikebukuro, the Nakano Sunshine Arcade, Akihabara and a host club. Check out the link above for details.
