Okazu turned 22 years old this past week! Given the fact that 38% of websites from 2013 no longer exist, to have 22 years of Yuri reviews and news is miraculous. ^_^

If you’d like to see us continue, please consider supporting us on Patreon or Ko-Fi! Love can do many things, but it doesn’t pay the bills. ^_^

AnimeNYC is upon us! Friday, August 23 – Sunday, August 25 at Javits Center in New York City, I will be at Table E01 in the Artist Alley with Rica Takashima, where we will be signing By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga. We also will have a fun little display of Yuri Anime History, that you can photo yourself with! Drop by, pick up a signed copy of our book and say hi!

I’ll be moderating a panel on Friday, August 23 – The Rise of Queer Manga, featuring editor TJ “Tiff” Ferentini, Letterer Nicole Roderick and Translator Jacqueline Fung! Join us at 3PM in Panel Room 3, A121. It’s gonna be a fantastic conversation.

Author Zack Davisson and I will be moderated by the awesome author and librarian Jillian Rudes on Sunday, at 12:30 for Manga By The Decade: Manga’s History Two Books At A Time in Panel Room 2, 1A12. I had a LOT of fun choosing my choices for this. All three of us will be talking about our books, including Zack’s and my upcoming work with Frederik Schodt, Rachel Thorn and Jonathan Clements, Manga: A Visual History.

As a result, there will be no YNN next week, but I hope to see you all at AnimeNYC!

For those of you who cannot make it, I’ll be doing a presentation of The Rise of Queer Manga for CitrusCon online on Sunday, August 25 at 9AM. Join us on Discord. It’s free to attend, but you do have to register.

There are two other interesting queer content panels, too at ANYC I want to should out: It’s a Serve! Queer Themes in Haikyuu!! and Transgender Representation in Anime. Drop in and see what they have to offer.

The inaugural North American Manga Awards will be held on Thursday, August 22. A couple of queer books have been nominated, including both She Loves To Cook and She Loves To Eat and The Summer Hikaru Died for Best Continuing Manga Series and My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, Special Edition for Best Publication Design. These awards are very long in the making and I’m going to be covering them for Anime Herald, so here’s hoping for an amazing first event!

Comiket is past, and a lot of Yuri circles rolled out for that! If you have FOMO about that, and can deal with wading through a lot of stuff that is porny, check out Melonbooks Comic Market 104 section. Comitia begins tonight my time, on the 18th in Japan. Two amazing comic shows back to back!

Yuri Games

Via YNN Correspondent Patricia Baxter, The Songbird Guild Demo is on Steam. This Yuri RPG/VN is about the secrets of a corrupt fantasy world and fighting creepy (yet somehow adorable?) monsters in turn-based battles, all to pay the bills in this world where being a magical girl is a regular 9-5 job and where magical girls fall in love.

Kitsune Tails is available on Steam and Itch.io! “Run, jump, and dash across a land inspired by Japanese mythology and untangle the love triangle between three young women on a journey of self discovery. Explore the complicated relationships between kitsune and humans through classic platforming action.” I know Eniko from way back – support their work!

Via Megan Catherine Rose, some fabulous reading as she and Patrick Galbraith interview animator Colin Armistead and voice actress Phoebe Chan in the Journal of Femininities. Megan says on her FB post, “In this interview we explore why anime cuteness, in particular the bishōjo figure, is significant for transfemmes. We discuss concepts of hyperfemininity in anime, its excess and boundless potential and what this can mean for those negotiating trans-feminine identities.” Read Animated Femininities, Queer Discontent for free on Brill.com.

Yuri Manga

New items up on the Yuricon Store!

Chasing Spica, Volume 1, by Chihiro Orihi, follows the tried and true formula of a popular girl who is targeted by the head of the morals committee at school. Volume 1 is available now from Seven Seas.

Also from Seven Seas is the final volume of my beloved end-of-the-world series, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Deluxe Edition, Volume 5. I’m so glad to have been able to get this in English. It is just so beautiful.

There’s No Freaking Way I’ll be Your Lover! Unless…, Volume 4 continues this love triangle / polyamory story by Teren Mikami.

Via her post on X, Mira Ong Chua’s ROADQUEEN: ETERNAL ROADTRIP TO LOVE ~afterglow edition~ “is an 288pg 18+ romcom graphic novel about love, revenge, and getting your bike back. This new PDF edition includes everything from the original, plus a new preface and bonus story. Also, it’s free!”

Amayo no Tsuki, Volume 7 (雨夜の月) is up on the store.  I cannot WAIT to tell you about this volume of Kuzushiro’s story. It was perfection. Volumes 1-5 of The Moon On A Rainy Night are available in English from Kodansha!

Two girls who are a little introverted try grabbing their springtime of their youths in Inkya Gal Demo Ikigaritai!, Volume 1 (陰キャギャルでもイキがりたい!)

Yuri manga artist Aneido has launched a kickstarter for Now No One Lurks Beneath the Snow: A Queer Fantasy Romance.

Hanakage Alt’s ALL BE PLUS Yuri manga about a heavy woman is available for preorder on DLSite. Check out some sample pages.

The Galette magazine kickstarter has passed it’s third stretch goal with 3 weeks left to go. I’d like to see it get to the 5 million yen stretch goal. To encourage folks to pick up the top reward level, they are adding more rewards to it! I’d love to, but $1000 is a little steep for me right now. They are going great guns, though and are only a few hundred away from fundraising 2x what they wanted for the initial goal.

In a conversation on the Okazu Discord, I noted that supporters for the Japanese edition are credited inside every issue of the magazine, so I counted how many people support that edition. As of Issue 30 (the one before the most recent issue) there are 210 supporters.  As an interesting point of comparison the English edition has 279 supporters as of this morning. So probably about what the JP edition began with. I’m too lazy to dig out the first issue and count. ^_^

The magazine crowdfunding has gone through a couple of platform changes  – and Fantia just stopped accepting overseas credit cards, which has caused support drop-offs.  Comic events are back in Japan, so some of their sales may have shifted back to those as well as on online bookstores and digital platforms – so the low number of supporters may be deceptive, but the fact supporters give them guaranteed income they can go into the creation of each issue before they sell issues through other venues. On this Kickstarter, they intelligently accounted for 6 issues, so about one volume’s worth each of the ongoing stories.

Yuri/Baihe Novels

In extremely exciting news, via YNN Correspondent Patricia Baxter, Yáng Shuang-zi’s novel Taiwan Travelogue is being released in English by Graywolf Press, with a November release date. You may recognize Yang’s name as the co-author of Girls’ Love: The Development History of Lily Fan Culture in Taiwan’s ACG Industry 2023 Revised Edition (少女之愛:台灣ACG界百合迷文化發展史 2023增修版), which I reviewed here on on Okazu in May. She is a famous lesbian novelist – I’m thrilled to have one of her books headed our way.

Via YNN Correspondent Sean Gaffney, Yen Press announced the license of the novel Lycoris Recoil: Ordinary Days. I reviewed it back in 2023. It was very like the anime, which makes sense, as the writer is the same. There is a little Yuri at the end in a dream sequence.

New friend zhufree on X has these pics from an ice cream shop in China that is also a Baihe novelist qxhs goods shop! We agreed that we are both jealous. ^_^

Now that it has a manga, I finally added the first novel of Twinstar Cyclone Runaway, Volume 1 (ツインスター・サイクロン・ランナウェイ) to the Store. In a world where only married straight couples can fish the skies, two young women decide to believe in one another.

August is always such an amazing time of year with tons of stuff going on and this year is no different. So let’s get into it. ^_^

Yuri Manga

The Galette Magazine in English kickstarter launched today and has already cleared it’s first goal! As I am typing, it is very close to clearing the first stretch goal in less than 24 hours. I’m very excited that you’ll all get to see what I have been talking about for 5+ years!

We have some new items up on the Yuricon Store!

I Can’t Say No to the Lonely Girl, Volume 3 just came out this past month and I’ve got it here on the to-review pile. ^_^ This series has a rocky start, but ends up quite sweet.

The fourth volume of Cheerful Amnesia will be hitting shelves in September.

Futaribeya: A Room for Two, Volume 5 is up on the Store. This series has very limited numbers of early volumes left, I find.

Pre-orders are being accepted for Kase-san and Yamada, Volume 4 now, with an April 2025 release date.

We have Comic Yuri Hime, September 2024 (コミック百合姫2024年9月号) on the store and I’m reading it now, trying to stay caught up. ^_^

Catching up on one other series on the Store, we have Kuzushiro’s Heian historical comedy Kimi no Tamenara Shineru, Volume 12 (姫のためなら死ねる)

A-shi to Watashi 2 Gal x Yuri Anthology (あーしとわたし。2 ギャル×百合アンソロジー) is the second Gal Yuri Anthology from Kadokawa which they promise is a “little more sexual” than the first.

For folks looking for something heartwarming, try Salvia no Bouquet, Part 1 (サルビアのブーケ(上)) the story of a young orphan being raised by an also young magic master.

Drop by and grab a copy of By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga signed by both of us! She’ll have art prints, I’m bringing some ALC manga and some postcards and stickers as give-aways, and it’ll be a blast for all of us.

Don’t miss my two panels! The Rise of Queer Manga, with TJ “Tiff” Ferentini, Jacqueline Fung and Nicole Roderick.  We’ll be talking about queerness in manga and being queer in manga!

On Sunday, Zack Davisson and I will be talking about A History of Manga By Decade: Manga’s History Two Books At A Time. We were hoping to promote our upcoming book Manga: A Visual History, coming this autumn from DK, but we couldn’t get permission to share pages. ^_^; Jillian Rudes of Manga in Libraries will be our moderator, so it’ll definitely be a party.

One last super exciting AnimeNYC note – this year is the first North American Manga Awards ceremony. Deb Aoki and pals have been working their butts off to get this established. Huge news this week, as the folks behind quarterly, crowd-funded Yuri manga magazine Galette have announced an upcoming Kickstarter for an English language edition! Sign up now on Kickstarter to get updates and be informed when the Kickstarter launches. This is big news, as the magazine features some veteran creators, like Yorita Miyuki, Morinaga Milk and Hakamada Mera.

Galette is currently crowdfunded in Japanese on Pixiv Fanbox, I hope they open an English-language ongoing option for support. Fanbox is available in English as well. (Although Pixiv is a morally questionable company, management having been accused of sexually harassing employees.)

Sheep Princess in Wolf’s Clothing, Volume 3 is on shelves now. Grab the next volume of this furry, Yuri, fairytale from a link on the Yuricon Store!

Looking for something a little less cute? Otherside Picnic manga, Volume 11 might scratch that itch, with the Mountain Ranch and cult of Satsuki Uruma followers. Guest reviewer Sandy Ferguson caught us up to date in his review of Volume 10.

Adult Life can be complicated, as Haru and Hina learn in Throw Away the Suit Together, Volume 1, which hit shelves this month.

Other News

Unseen Japan ( a recommended site to follow on the social platform of your choice) has the news that Netflix is launching the very first same-sex dating show in Japan, called The Boyfriend.

And in a completely bonkers decision, the folks behind Lycoris Recoil are dragging NFTs from their grave to auction off. According to the announcement, a “portion of the money will go to the creators in charge.” The auction site is pretty slow to load. A quick summation of the response was captured beautifully by this poster, who said, “I’d rather have a second season than an art auction.”

Overseas response seemed to be pretty negative, while Japanese response was split a little more evenly.

On a happier note, Netflix has posted the Sailor Moon Cosmos trailer to Youtube and Kodansha has announced a box set for the first 6 volumes of anniversary manga of Sailor Moon. Rafael Antonio Pineda has the details on ANN about that.

Kenichi Sonoda (Gunsmith Cats, Riding Bean) was awarded an Inkpot Award at San Diego Comic- Con to recognize the impact he has had on his industry. Joseph Luster has the news on Crunchyroll.

Via Yuri Navi, the manga series Hana wa Saku, Shura no Gotoku (花は咲く、修羅の如く) by Takeda Ayano and manga artist Mushu, currently being serialized in Ultra Jump magazine, will be made into a TV anime. This is about a girl whose love of reading brings in friends as she helps out with her school’s broadcasting club. Looks to be a nice everyday slice-of-life, cute girls doing cute things cutely, anime. I’m all for that.

The schedule has dropped for Anime NYC and there are going to be a bunch of interesting panels. It’s got a nice mix of industry and fan stuff going on!. I’ll try and do a round-up before we’re live.

Please join TJ “Tiff” Ferentini, Jacqueline Fung, Nicole Roderick and myself on Friday, August 23 in Panel Room 3 for The Rise of Queer Manga and on Sunday, August 25 at 12:30, in Panel Room 1, for A History of Manga By Decades: Manga History Two Books At A Time, with myself and Zack Davisson, where we’ll be talking up our new book, Manga: A Visual History from DK!

Rica Takashima and I will be tabling together and we’re thinking of doing a little pop-up on where to get Yuri in Tokyo. In the mean time, I do want to let you know that Yuri Cafe Anchor has been rebranded to Anchor rainbowport Tokyo. It still is all about Yuri, and is very openly welcoming all genders, with a charge-free period every day, so it can function as a true “third space.” If you get a chance, you should drop by (and buy something to support them, anyway. ^_^)

I’ve put our very own Okazu merch back on the Yuricon Store just in time for you to show up at AnimeNYC wearing your love of Yuri on your chest. Our Okazu Mascots Love Yuri tee comes in 8 colors and sizes from Small to 3x. All of the new designs are back up on the Yuri Apparel section in multiple colors and sizes so I hope to see you proclaiming your love of Yuri at the con! You know I will be. ^_^

Also at AnimeNYC will be the first-ever North American Manga Awards! My very sincere congratulations to Deb Aoki who has working on the creation of this award for years. This is a much-needed award, as manga is regularly sidelined at the Eisners, even though manga is, as a category, the largest chunk of comic sales in the US. Two amazing lesbian works are up for awards: Sakaomi Yuzaki’s She Loves To Cook and She Loves To Eat, from Yen Press is up for a Best Continuing Series Award and the My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness Special Edition by Kabi Nagata, is up for Best Publication Design.  Check out the full nominations list on ANN by Rafael Antonio Pineda. Congrats to all the nominees! I’m so excited that this is a real thing after all that work by so many folks.

Yuri manga artist Inui Ayu shared some photos of the Shoujo x Shoujo 4 Yuri Managka Exhibition (少女と少女と少女~百合作家4人展~) in Kichioji this week, featuring work by Morinaga Milk, Hakamada Mera, Hatosaki Haru and Morita Miyuki.  My favorite photo shows the nicely framed Yuri prints in the window, where anyone passing by can see them. ^_^

Don’t miss Miguel Adarlo’s report on the The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All Cafe, this week on Okazu!

If you’ve attended any Yuri-themed event or location, we’d love your impressions, Contact us here to write something up for Okazu.

Rafael Antonio Pineda also has the news that Chaser Game W, the live-action series based on the manga of the same name, is getting a second season. Season 1 was reviewed here on Okazu by Staff Writer Frank Hecker, who has been amazing at  tracking down and reviewing live action Yuri!

Just want to remind folks, too to watch Ayaka is in Love With Hiroko, available on GagaOOLala streaming with EN subtitles or TVer.jp on for free in Japanese only. This has been a very entertaining adaptation of the manga, Aayaka-chan ha  by Sal Jiang so far!
