Yuri Live-Action

Let’s start off with something a little different today. Takarazuka has announced that they will be doing a Phoenix Wright show in February through March. The Takarazuka website has a peek at the poster for the show. This performance is Cosmos troupe, for those of you who follow TK. :-)

Yuri Anime

Right Stuf has announced that they have updated the Maria Watches Over Us website, with new trailers and spiffy downloads for fans of the series. There’s also official character profiles now for Touko and Noriko.

Meanwhile, on the Japanese-language Marimite website, Gokigenyou.com, you can see the character design for Shouko – a character I cannot *wait* for you all to meet.

Also, because this ought to be a challenge….The Rose Mansion is coming to life again in Second Life, on 12/12 and 12/19 at 11PM Japan time. News about the events can be found here – in Japanese, of course. I’m going to try and make one of the events. I don’t know if it will work, and I’ll probably be hopelessly lost, but…

Yuri Drama CD

I’d completely forgotten to mention that there are BLUE DROP drama CDs – Volume 1 and Volume 2 – that were put out this year. They both seem to deal with the story from the first volume of manga (not the anime) and are further delineated into “Lover’s Side” and “Traitor’s Side.” Intruiging, huh? I’ll add these to the “to-get” lists and report back when I’ve had a chance to give them a listen. :-)

Yuri Manga

The newest 100% Yuri anthology from ALC Publishing, Yuri Monogatari 6 is up for a limited time/limited audience pre-preorder special. Members of the Yuricon Mailing List and J.D. Glass’s newsletter were treated to a special discount and extra gift order. Expect a more open pre-order period after the holidays. And I’ll do a sneek peak then, too. It’s going to be a fabulous anthology!

No “Snatches” today. It’s been a long week. I’ll try and play catch up next week with a list of obscure stuff you don’t care about. lol

This Week in Yuri – November 29, 2008

November 29th, 2008

This week is a veritable cornucopia of Yuri news!

Yuri Live-Action

There’s little more than a promotional image and a bundle of hope, but AIC has announced that a live-action Bugglegum Crisis is not entirely fantasy. Will we finally get the totally dyke-y Priss we want and deserve? Probably not. lol But we can hope, can’t we?

Fans of Yuricest will want to keep an eye out for Brulee, a movie that stars twin sisters, playing twin sisters that are separated and, upon reunion, fall in love with one another. Expect dry, unromantic Japanese kiss scenes. :-)

Yuri Anime

With the US release of the second season of Maria Watches Over Us just around the corner, and the fourth season of Maria-sama ga Miteru coming this January, we’re all aquiver for Marimite news around here. And boy do we have it! To celebrate the fourth season, a New Year’s Eve event has been announced in Japan. Not only will it feature sneak peeks at the fourth season – it will also feature a 3-dimensional “story so far.” LOL How’s that for an exciting use of CG, huh? Long lingering shots of the 3-D Rose Mansion, the table in the council room, Catholic schoolgirls standing around talking…. (I’m guessing that it’s based on designs created for the Bara no Yakata in Second Life and expanded from there.) I’m sure it will be cool, if a little weird.

And exciting news for the three or so of you who enjoyed it, Project ICE is being made into a movie for the theaters. Two streaming trailers are available online now.

Snatches of Yuri

It’s almost December, and therefore the publishers of Yuri Hime, Ichijinsha, are gearing up for their winter releases. The 18th of the month will see the next Yuri Hime S magazine, and several collections from same.

Keep your eyes open for links to order the first collected volumes of Flower Flower, Honey Crush and Cassiopeia Dolce. Also Otome Kikan Gretel which will be the only one I’m planning on getting for myself.

Also coming out this month (pun intended, yes) is the second and final volume of Strawberry Shake Sweet. And a second volume of the light novel Wild Bouquet, this one subtitled “The Flower Whose Name Means Desire.” Sounds spicy, but I’m not holding my breath. (Review of the first volume of Wild Bouquet to come soon, btw.)

Yuri Games

No specifically Yuri, but the game Fable II for the Xbox is being given same-sex options on partnering, with dialogue that is supposed to be more representative of those relationships. Since one of the creators is gay, the dialogue will at least be more representative of a gay male relationship. The only lesbian option mentioned in the article I read was a cross-dressing pregnant lesbian, which didn’t really make me sit up and go “yay” or anything. lol (The wife says “God, you’re never satisfied, are you?” lol)

One last thing – this a personal request. If you are considering purchasing *anything* from Amazon or Amazon Japan this holiday season, please consider doing so through the Yuricon Shop. Just click through any item at all and then go ahead and shop as usual. It won’t cost you anything extra and it will give me referrer fees that are, at the moment, much needed. Many thanks in advance.

And that wraps it up for now – happy Yuri hunting until next week!

Yuri Manga

Anonymous wrote in to let us know that the first collection of Chi-Ran’s Yuri Hime stories, Shoujo Bigaku is now available in Germany! Cool for European Yuri fans.

Yuri Anime

Sleepy is pleased to share the news that new Ichigo Mashimaro anime is slated to be released on January 29, 2009. More Miu madness, more 5 girls doing absolutely nothing cutely. lol

emilie wanted to remind us that Nabatome Hitomi is confirmed as the voice of Nana in the upcoming Maria-sama ga Miteru fourth anime season – and wants us to know that the new radio drama is is up for that! It includes a short story from the 30th novel. (You may remember that Nabatome Hitomi played Eriko in the previous seasosn, so it’s either a genius move – or a cheap one. You decide. lol)

Yuri Webcomic

Creator Leia Weathington asked if I could let you all know about Legend of Bold Riley, the ongoing adventures of a lesbian princess. Of course I can. :-) She also wants you to know that a collected volume will be out in 2010, so keep it on your radar!

Snatches of Yuri

Okay, there’s a series running in Comic Rex magazine called Onigokko . I have no idea what it’s about, but there’s chicks with weapons, so one has to suppose there’s some Yuri, doesn’t one? :-) Japanese Yuri blogs seems to think so.

I don’t even know what to say about this one. Abunai! Tosho-inchou! seems to live in that world where library workers dress like maids. Beats me why anyone would want that. Again, the kinds of people who think that is right and just, will certainly find there be Yuri.

And just to remind the faithful that there is Marimite outside the anime, the most recent book, Maria-sama ga Miteru: Sotugyousen Shoukei is available for sale. It happens to be the next book I’ll be reading. Cannot *wait*!

That’s it for this week, but keep the news coming and I’ll be sure to share it!

Yuri News This Week – November 15, 2008

November 15th, 2008

Away we go!

Yuri Anime

Mediaworks has announced a Strawberry Panic anime box set in Japan. It’s not out of the pale to think that we might see one for the English release as well one day.

Right Stuff has announced a slightly delayed release date for the second season box set of Maria Watches over Us. Now it’s slated to hit the streets on December 9, 2008. And they’ve given us an initial release date of February 24, 2009 for the third season, the OAV box set!

Katherine shares news about an upcoming anime called Queen’s Blade, which will include women fighting in bikini-like battle armor for the approval of the Queen. (I’m kind of loosely summarizing there, lol). In any case, she thinks we’ll find it relevant to our interests and there’s plenty of Yuri-service for those as who find that good enough. :-)

Winterbraid has weighed in to let folks know that the third volume of El Cazador de la Bruja hit the European market without fanfare – or indeed, without promotion of any kind. I want to take a moment to include some of Winterbraid’s review here, because no only do I sympathize, I think it’s worth reading:

Unfortunately, the release leaves much to be desired. The translation
goes down the toilet right from the start of this volume, and doesn`t
get much better towards the end; I have caught a typo in the polsub that
would for sure give any of my former language teachers a heart attack,
and the characters mostly use language you`d expect from a
half-illiterate person.

[nag]
I don’t get it; Polish is in my opinion one of the most beautiful and
poetry-friendly languages in the world (not that I know that many
languages, mind you ^-^;), yet most translators write as if they`d
stopped their education at elementary school level. (Although I remember
being able to write way better than that in the elementary school.) It
makes me recall a very wise sentence, which says that a person doing
translations doesn`t need to know the language of the original work
perfectly; however, they must excel at the language they are translating
into. Sadly, the majority of translations indicate that the reverse is
more often the case. :/
[/nag]

Gerdub doesn`t fail at life any less than it did previously;
unfortunately, I listened to quite a bit of it, `cause Mplayer went on
strike and VLC switched to gerdub by default on every new track. >_Maybe it`s just me, but even the postcards in this volume seem a bit
weird. The cover is Ellis and Nadie with cat ears, the inside is the bad
guys on one page and Lilio on the other, and the DVD label is E/N in
waitress uniforms;

LOL, we sympathize on those dub issues, Winterbraid!

Winterbraid also wants us to know that the Murder Princess OAV is available in a single box set in Europe. A bit pricey, we’re warned, but hey – it’s all in one.

Yuri Manga

Silapa is proud to announce that the CoYuHi forums have launched their original Spanish-language Yuri Project manga. Good luck to them!

***

Yuri Contests

Just as a reminder, Okazu is holding a special Hayate x Blade contest. Entries will be accepted until November 30, so entertain me and get a copy of HxB for yourself or for a library near you!

Johann writes in to let us know that not only is there a spiffy Maria Watches Over Us poster in this issue of OtakUSA magazine, but they are holding a contest as well! The current giveaway, Johann says, includes two Marimite S1 DVD box sets. Nice.

***

Yuri Artbook

Johann also pointed out Flamboyant artbook by Ugestu Hakua, the artist for Burst Angel, (aka Bakuretsu Tenshi,) has been translated and released by DMP. He tells us that the first half of the book is all BA pictures, so if you ever wanted Meg, Jo, Amy and Sei-who–is-not-named-Beth in full color, here’s your chance! Great catch, Johann!

***

I think that’s everything for today. My continued thanks to the folks who write in with tidbits (or, perhaps I should use the British alternative for that?) and news items for us all! Please feel free to send any news you come across of Yuri interest and I’ll share it with everyone. :-)

Yuri News this Week – November 8, 2008

Yuri Anime

Forgot to mention this previously, but the Lyrical Nahoha A’s season boxset pre-order is available for an early 2009 release.

A new ero-fan book has been annouced for the series Ikkitousen. LFs of both genders can marvel at the fact that the female characters of Ikkitousen have genitalia and secondary sexual characteristics, creatively (not realistically) rendered by people who have never actually seen a woman naked. Go fans.

Live Action

Osama Tezuka’s MW is being made into a live-action movie. It’s clear from the trailer that the creepy remains intact, but whether the relationship between the two male leads will be kept is yet to be revealed (based on the movie description, they’ve taken out the fact that the priest and the kid are lovers.) The chances of getting even a cameo for the one stable, normal, and completely emotionally healthy character in the book – the lesbian newspaper editor – is unlikely, but we can hope. Because her insertion in the story as everything is going to hell was not at all capricious, and sends a powerful message.

***

Snatches of Yuri

In the interest of mentioning novels none of us will ever read, Kanjou Kyouiku seems to be more of the same high school love stuff, taking place in a slightly fantasy school setting. In fact, the synopsis made it sound just like the movie Teresa and Isabel (which, if you have not watched, you should. It’s quite nice.) The love is real, but not “real,” I’m betting.

And speaking of fantasy schools, Youkai Gakuenki is about – you guessed it. Girls at a fantasy school. Looks way too moe for me, but the Yuri blog boys in Japan give it top ratings for Yuri. So…expect service. Looks like you’ll like it if you like the whole animal-eared girl thing.

Sugar ha Otoshigoro – instead of moe animal ears, you’re back in the huge breast fetish world. Although I’m prepared to bet that it’s all still schoolgirls. Oh look at that, it is.

***

Okay, that’s enough today. I’m schoolgirled out. When I get home tonight, I’ll have the newest issue of Gunjou so I can stop thinking about “pure” and “innocent” (blecch) love during school years and think about horribly broken, violent adults instead. Phew.
