Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – January 8, 2022

January 8th, 2022

I foolishly took New Year’s Day off, so we have a LOT of news to get through today. Ready? Let’s have at it!

Yuri Manga

Seven Seas has announced the license of Ratana Satis’ Yuri webtoon, Pulse. And they seem to be specifically launching a new Seven Seas Webtoon‘s section of their website.

Via YNN Correspondent Laurent L, French manga publisher Taifu Comics has licensed Takeshima Eku’s Sasayakuyouni Koi o Utau as Whispering You a Love Song. This was among my top series for 2021, so yay French readers!

While I’m gathering up some amazing news about the international licensing scene, I want to add this piece of non-Yuri news: Webtoons is publishing a comic by Princess Jellyfish creator Higashimura Akiko. Alex Mateo has the news on ANN.

Tokyopop has licensed a new title, this one from Comic Ryu – Yuri Espoir. The OASG broke the news on Twitter. I think Ryu titles suit them and hope to see them pick up some others.

The Adachi and Shimamura light novel series will reach Volume 8 next month, with a release from Seven Seas and, based on the summary alone – will have not moved forward at all as a plot. Reminder kids, being obsessed with someone to the point that you are incapable of handling anything else or them interacting with anyone else, is super duper unhealthy and not at all romantic.

We have a few titles in Japanese and English that are on the Yuricon Store!

Heading our way soon is Miyako Miyahara’s I Can’t Believe I Slept With You!, Volume 1, from Seven Seas (originally known as Even If It Was Just Once, I Regret It).

Chasing After Aoi Koshiba, Volume 3 is now fully loaded with affiliate links to various print and digital vendors. No clue why, but Bookwalker just wasn’t coming through with that.

Also on the Store:

Yuzaki Sakomi’s Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna, Volume 2 (作りたい女と食べたい女), which I just finished reading, is so good. ^_^ YNN Correspondent Patricia B has written in to let us know that this series was voted #2 in manga for female readers by “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!.” Look Back, which I reviewed recently, turned up at #1 on the list for male readers. Alex Mateo has the whole list over on ANN.

We have Inui Ayu’s adorable autobiographical comic Kyou mo Hitotsu Yane no Shita, Volume 1 (今日もひとつ屋根の下) in print or digital format on the Store. It’s just so charming. ^_^

From webnovel to light novel to manga and back to revised light novel, Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou. -Revolution-, Volume 1 (私の推しは悪役令嬢。-Revolution-) is Ichijinsha’s rebooted light novel for inori’s series, now with illustrations by Aonishimo-sensei, who does the art for the manga. My copy should be arriving today! Can’t wait to see it.

Ane no Shinyuu, Watashi no Koibito. (姉の親友、私の恋人。) by Fujimatsu Mei is a complicated story of a woman with a siscon who falls for her sister’s friend. Via Yuri Navi, there is a 18-minute long voice comic on Youtube for this story. Having listened to it, I am really waffling on how I feel about the whole thing. ^_^;

Akuyaku Reijou to Ai No Tamenara Nan Demo Suru Onna – Ane Ido Hyaku Go Sakuhinshu (悪役令嬢と愛のためならなんでもする女 姉井戸・百合作品集). This collection of work by Ane Ido has a title story of a woman summoned to another world to meet her favorite character, the “villainess.” I love the cover art and plan on giving it a try.

Via Comic Natalie, the first volume of Yuri love comedy, Oshi V ga Oshiego de Watashi ga Mama de!? (推しVが教え子で私がママで!?) Volume 1, is available for those who may enjoy the hijinks between a student teacher and her student Vtuber.

Also via Comic Natalie we have news of Volume 1 of Anata ga Watashi wo Terasu kara. (あなたが私を照らすから。) from Comic Cune, by Muku. In this cute-by-design story, the school holds a “best couple” contest to determine the Student Council President and VP. Akie has fallen for Yuki, will they be the next best couple?

Yuri Anime

Egan Loo at ANN reports on new details of cast, staff, music and more for the spring debut of The Executioner and Her Way of Life.

Via YNN Correspondent dm, Kodansha’s series My Master Has No Tail is getting an anime! This is a great choice. I have no doubt it will make a fun anime. Egan again has the report on ANN. I’ve reviewed Volume 1 and Volume 2 in Japanese here on Okazu. Check out the trailer on Youtube. The novels are available from Yen Press, and I have reviewed Volume 1 and Volume 2.

Yuri VNs

Bad Faith is a “solo-developed psychological horror/drama visual novel about sanctuaries, secrets, and serious consequences.” This new Yuri VN looks like a pretty dark take on the private school trope. It comes with content warning as soon as you hit the page, so they ain’t playing around. Still, it looks interesting if that’s your cup of tea. If you are giving it a whirl, let me know, I’d love a review.

Yuri Doujinshi

Lilyka has a new title, A Manga About An All Girls’ College Student by Yuriemon. “Miwa Wakamatsu is a female college student who is interested in studying psychology…? and LIKES GIRLS! One day she goes out to casually confess her love but is immediately turned down, which makes things very awkward.”

Other News

It was a week of mergers and acquisitions in the anime world. AMC has acquired Sentai Filmworks and HIDIVE, and Cinedigm has purchased RetrocrushTV. I expect that to kill the free-with-ads model for Retrocrush, so watch what you want to see now if you’re opposed to paying for anime. As Justin Sevakis noted on Twitter, this makes Discotek the only independent anime distributor now.

Yuri Manga

We have a lot of new titles on the Yuricon Shop, so get yourself a gift or two – you deserve it. ^_^

One of my favorite series in recent years, Ohsawa Yayoi’s Hello, Melancholic, Volume 1 will be hitting shelves in Februrary 2022. Music and romance and healing. ❤

A White Rose in Bloom, Volume 2 by Nakamura Asumiko. This series took a unique turn in it’s concluding volume and I can’t wait for you all to be able to read it!

Also in February, How Do We Relationship, Volume 5 will be out in English. This is where everything begins to change.

5 Seconds Before a Witch Falls in Love is a cute one-volume story about a with and witch hunter.

School Zone Girls, Volume 3 is out and I am assured it is as fun as the rest of the series!

Kuzushiro’s school life story about a musician and a deaf girl who changes her and her music,  Uyanotski, (雨夜の月) is up on the Store.

Comic Yuri Hime, January 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年1月号) started the year off right.

The Pixiv Comic Rankings were released in Japan and if you scroll down a bit, you’ll see that their number one title for the year was Usui Shio’s Onna Tomodachi Kekkonshitmeta. (女ともだちと結婚してみた。) followed by inori’s Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou.

Another notable winner was in the Futari Gohan category Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna (作りたい女と食べたい女) by Yuzaki Kaomi, about two neighbors who bond over food. It includes depictions of work place harassment and thoughts around sexual identity. This series is ongoing. Volume 1 and Volume 2 are on the Yuricon Store. It’s really quite good. Check out the rest and see what you think. ^_^

Yuri VNs & Games

We’ve added two new items to the store:

OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos ~Love・or・die~, which is available on Steam or  from Lilika.

Yuri Ranbo High-speed battle Yuri Harem Strategy Card Game (合乱慕/高速対戦百合ハーレム形成カードゲーム) was too just unique to not list. ^_^

Other News

Egan Loo over at ANN has the details of the first Penguindrum movie which is slated for a spring 2022 opening in Japan.

For those of us who like comparative media analysis, I have two items!

Caroline Kerjean’s memoir and essay on anime and literature, A Bloody Song: How Anime and Literature Collide. I’m looking forward to reading this.

And my pal Mani wrote a brilliant look at Steven Universe and Horror for Kidz on his blog, EYEZ AND TEEF.

One last time, if you missed the Japan Foundation of NY talk Shojo Manga: The Power and Influence of Girls Comics, you can watch it at your leisure on Youtube.

Yuri Light Novels

I’m in Love With the Villainess Light Novel, Volume 4 is up for pre-order and let me tell you how good it is…it’s great. ^_^

Bookwalker has their 50 Bestselling LN and Manga list up and I’m in Love with the Villainess came in at #14! (As Sean G. pointed out, if you take the manga out of the list, it was #10.) Roll Over and Die came in at #38.

Via Comic Natalie, Haganai writer, Hirasaka Yomi has started a Yuri story in Big Gangan Comics, Shimekiri mae ni wa Yuri ga Hakadoru (〆切前には百合が捗る). You can read a sample of the story on the GA bunko website, liked above. Someone recently asked me if I’d read this and while it looked familiar, I couldn’t place why I hadn’t. Now I can –  Gangan and I have not had a harmonious relationship. ^_^ This does look nice but, yep, the color images jump right into bathing, don’t they.
So…maybe…I will read it. No promises.

And Volume 7 of Urasekai Picnic (裏世界ピクニック) has hit shelves this week in Japan.

Yuri Manga

We have a few new items up on the Yuricon Store.

The Girl I Want Is So Handsome! – The Complete Manga Collection, is an omnibus version of Ikemen-sugi, Shiki-sempai!,  very cute short girl meets-absurdly-cool-and-handsome-girl school love story.

Watashi no Oshi ha Akujyaku Reijou., Volume 3 manga (私の推しは悪役令嬢。) is up on the Store. It’s the big battle between Claire and Rae!

Comic Yuri Hime, January 2022 (コミック百合姫2022年1月号). New cover story, new design, great Yuri manga!

Minna Watashi no Hara no Naka (みんな私のはらのなか) by Chisako, is a Shakaijin Yuri story about a women with a huge appetite looking for  someone who accepts her whole self. Take it for a test drive in Japanese at Takeshobo’s Storia Dash website.

Ichijinsha has a new themed anthology out, Maid-san to Yuri ni Tsuite no Anthology (メイドさんと百合についてのアンソロジー). As you might be able to surmise from the title, it is a maid Yuri anthology. ^_^

Via Comic Natalie, Futari Escape (ふたりエスケープ) is getting a 3rd volume. It’s a fun manga….but is it Yuri? I still can’t decide.

Iwami Kyoko’s new series, Kyou ha Kanojo ga Inai kara (今日はカノジョがいないから) has a collected Volume 1 hitting JP shelves this weekend!

Kodama Naoko has a new short works collection called Suki Dakara H Shitemasu. (好きだからHしてます。)

Via Yuri Navi, we have Comic Zenon online running a one-shot Mermaid and Idol manga, Namatatsu Mermaid
 (波立つマーメイド) by Makise Hatsune.

Yuri Visual Novel

Lilyka is selling another Yuri Visual Novel, SukeraSparo’s OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos ~Love・or・die~.

Yuri Manga

We have (finally!) a bunch of titles on the Yuricon Store!

Chasing After Aoi Koshiba, Volume 3 will be out in January 2022.

Eri Ejima’s popular Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games, Volume 2 is out this month. Check out Luce’s review of Volume 1 last month on Okazu.

You can pre-order the print volume of Our Teachers Are Dating, Volume 4. This book has been delayed from a February release to an April one.

The pre-orders for the print edition of Tamifull’s How Do We Relationship, Volume 5 are up as well. This is still slated for a February release.

I’m in Love With the Villaness, Volume 2 of the manga is available on all three of our affiliates (at last!)

Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou., manga Volume 3 (私の推しは悪役令嬢。) is up on Amazon JP for pre-order to be released net week.

Watashi no Yuri ha Oshigoto Desu! Volume 9 (私の百合はお仕事です!) by Miman is on shelves now in Japan.

Seven Seas has licensed SHWD, by sono.N. Alex Mateo has the details on ANN, I reviewed volume 1 in September (after having also picked it up as doujinshi at Comitia AND bought it as translated doujinshi on Lilyka, so that out to give you a hint of how I feel about it.) I’m really thrilled that Seven Seas has clearly developed a relationship with Comic Ruelle & Comic Jardin, as well. They’ve so far had some great Yuri series.

Via Yuri Mother, Adachi and Shimamura has been named one of the Top 10 Manga of 2021 by School Library Journal.

Yuri Events

This week is smoking hot with two amazing events, I’d love to see you at! Shojo Manga: The Power and Influence of Girls’ Comics by The Japan Foundation will be held this week, on Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM EST. Registration is free and yes, barring disaster, the video will be posted on Youtube for folks who miss the discussion.

Following immediately after this, on Friday, Dec. 17, from 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM EST, please join myself and James Welker for a discussion of how BL and Yuri have grown over the last few decades, at CasaCon, on Discord! Registration is free. Last year we had a blast, so drop by for our casual conversation about massive changes in culture and media. ^_^

In case you missed it last week, the entire discussion from the Yuricon 20th Anniversary discussion event is up on Youtube. Thanks again to James Welker and Verena Maser for joining us.

Light Novels

Via Inori-sensei’s Twitter feed, I’m in Love With the Villainess has been released in French by LaNovel Edition.

Again, I know no one cares, but the 4th volume of Kunoichi Bettegumi Igarashi Satsuki (くノ一別手組ー五十嵐五月) china’s batshit samurai x probably-a-vampire period drama (some people write Madama Butterfly, other people write this) is on the Store, now. ^_^

Yuri Anime

Via Lesley Aeschliman, Pluto TV has added The Rose of Versailles TV anime!

Sentai Filmworks has re-released Canaan, the Complete Series for a fraction of the price I bought it for, yowza. That’s on the Yuricon Store now.

Anime-adjacent, Charagumin is going to be releasing a resin kit of Anthy and Utena, hat tip to Gangablu on Twitter.

Event News

There’s still time to register for Shojo Manga: The Power and Influence of Girls’ Comics sponsored by the Japan Foundation of New York. I’m looking forward to it so much and hope to see you online for this fabulous talk, featuring Deborah Shamoon, Mia Lewis, Kazumi Nagaike and me.

Okazu Patrons will be receiving their invitations to our Online Holiday Party shortly, and while I know that this time of year is just the worst, I’ll be happy if as many of you can come as possible. We have a lot to talk about…and I am really hoping that we’ll be able to do a book cover reveal for By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga.

This summer’s 20th Anniversary of Yuricon Discussion Event is now live on Yuri Studio! I’m super sorry it took so long to get done, things just kept getting in the way. But this makes 8 videos for Yuri Studio this year, which is 2 more than my original goal, so yay us! Thank you very very much to Ashley for your video editing, you’ve been a tremendous help, and thank you to Okazu Patrons!

One last bit of serious news. I’m sure most of you have heard that there was a omicron variant case who was at Anime NYC. It’s 2 weeks today and I have had no symptoms, but I’ve got an appt. for a test as soon as I could get it, because I care about people who have seen me since. I expect it to come back negative. Let me be clear – everyone at the con was vaxxed and masked the whole time and I expect no more than a handful of folks will test positive. Nonetheless, I couldn’t help but make the worst joke about it all. ^_^;

Yuri Manga

School Zone Girls, Volume 3 hit shelves this week. More wacky school fun.

Seven Seas announced another Comic Yuri Hime license, Yuama’s The Summer You Were There. I’m still tapping my foot impatiently waiting for Odoriba ni Skirt ga Naru. ^_^

Not manga, but equally as fun: Jacqueline Lesnick has released all of her Girly collection for free on itch.io. I was and am, a fan of that gonzo Yuri series. She’s also making You Suck available and the first several chapters of her current story Princess Panic. These are name your own price and I hope you’ll all throw her a few bucks for the time, effort and entertainment these offer.

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda offered me a new reason to re-up my subscription to Rakuen Le Paradis magazine, with the news that Mizutani Fuuka is wrapping up her 14-sai no Koi series and starting a side story about Aoi and her relationship with the school doctor.  I referenced that relationship a few years ago in a review of Issue 26. ^_^ I’m kind of interested how it goes. That magazine – indeed, that very manga series – is full of problematic relationships, so it will hardly be alone in it’s “urk” value.

Live Action News

The next Sailor Moon Musical, Kaguya-hime no Koibito, will stream online in the new year, through Live Viewing Japan. Alex Mateo has details on ANN. I watched the last streaming musical because of course I did. ^_^ Nogizaka46 members are perfectly fine in their roles.

Yuri Light Novel

Look. I know, I am the only one who care about this series. But it’s my blog. ^_^ The Kunoichi Bettegumi ~ Igarashi Satsuski series has a fourth volume! I finally managed to make time to read Volume 3, review to come eventually, and I am actually glad that it’s continuing. I wish J-Novel club would pick these up. They are absurd, yes, but no more absurd than Girls Kingdom. A definitely-gay-probaby-a-vampire, a maid, a samurai and a ninja in a historical drama. Seriously. This series is a hoot.

Yen Press has released The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Vol. 3: The Cage of Iron Sand ahead of the 2022 anime.
