Yuri Events

There are a double handful of spaces left for the 20th Anniversary Yuricon Community Event. I hope you will join James Welker, Verena Maser and myself for an event celebrating you, the global Yuri fandom – in one week, on August 14, at 8AM Eastern US time on zoom.

Yuri Studio

We have a new video up on Yuri Studio. Following S02 E03 Gateway Yuri Anime Part 1: The 1990s, in which we looked at anime that had a powerful impact on developing what we now think of as the Yuri fandom, in Yuri Studio S02 E04 Gateway Yuri Anime, Part 2: The 2000s  we talk about the anime that helped a new Yuri fandom grow and evolve! Please do not forget to like this video on Youtube and subscribe to the channel. It is a huge help.

We have plans for more events, more videos and more direct support of
queer creators and reviewers – and we need your help to do it.

Yuri Manga

Out now from Seven Seas, we have the conclusion of Days of Love at Seagull Villa, Volume 3 and Doughnuts Under A Crescent Moon, Volume 2!

Coming next winter from Seven Seas, we are getting Monologue Woven For You, a full-color Yuri manga that has been on my to-read pile for months. I’d better get to it!

Shizuku is directly involved in Kaori’s trauma, but wants sincerely make it up to Kaori in Volume 1 of Kimi to Tsuzuru Utakata, (君と綴るうたかた). Complicating matters, Kaori is Shizuku’s favorite author!

In Doukyuusei no Oshi Sakka ni Yuri Mousou ga Bareta Kekka (同級生の推し作家に百合妄想がバレた結果) a classmate finds her classmate is the writer of her favorite Yuri novel! Which is like the same plot as above without trauma.

The Manga Park app has sample pages of a new occult Yuri comedy up for free in Japanese. Occultken ha Sonzashinai!! (オカルト研は存在しない!!) is also coming to Japanese shelves as a collected Volume 1 later this month.

Yuri Anime

The historical fantasy Yuri manga Uchi no Shishou ha Shippo ga Nai, about a Tanuki who learns Rakugo from a Kitsune woman is getting an anime adaptation! ANN’s Egan Loo has casting details and Alex Mateo has the rest of the story. I reviewed volume 1 of the manga here last winter.

Adrian Hazra on ANN has the news that Retrocrush has picked up Revolutionary Girl Utena Movie – The Adolescence of Utena for streaming.

Yuri Doujinshi

This news item was a whole story in 4 panels: Lilyka has licensed a new doujinshi (Yay!) call Hakuba Run. It’s an action adventure story! (YAY!) I’ll just go over and read that synopsis….(What the ever-loving fuck? What did I just even read?) I won’t spoil…go read that synopsis for yourself. It’s an adventure, for sure.

Yuri Light Novels

Seven Seas tweeted that Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight For An Ordinary Life With My Love and My Cursed Sword, Volume 4 is on shelves. It’s been a pretty violent series, even so, let me suggest you read Sean Gaffney’s review before picking this one up.

Other News

Hayate x Blade Fans! Hayashiya-sensei has put together another round of limited shirts on her webstore. Some of the Black Group characters are available and Nagi and her shinyuu.

AkiYanagi on Twitter wants us to know that Yahoo News JP announced that  Takarazuka will be making an appearance at the Olympics closing ceremony, with a Rose of Versailles performance.

Among a number of other anime/manga homages at the Pandemic Games, the Uzbekistan rhythmic gymnastics team performed their routine to Sailor Moon theme Moonlight Densetsu.

Princess Weekes has news on The Mary Sue that Renee O’Connor and Lucy Lawless will be teaming up for some episodes in Lawless’ new series. It’s heart-warming to know that they are still out there, enjoying their fandom enjoying them. ^_^

The Journal of Anime and Manga Studies is a relatively new open-access peer-reviewed academic journal about anime and manga studies. This journal is hungry for your submissions and is a fantastic resource for independent scholars. You can find them on Twitter, where they retweeted this discussion by Billy Tringali on the Importance of LGBTQ+ Representation in Anime.

JAMS also shared ANN CEO and Publisher Christopher MacDonald’s editorial about How Much Does It Cost to License Anime? This was a direct response to the AnimeTube debacle of a Kickstarter that expected to license anime for bout $4 an episode, so was probably only 100000x off projection.

Yuri Manga

Playing some catch up this week! First, we have a couple of new items up on the Yuricon Store:

Cocoon Entwined, Volume 3, out from Yen Press is now available in English and the story is becoming more compelling and creepy.

The Whole of Humanity Has Gone Yuri Except for Me is out now also from Yen Press. This is a sci-fi story in which a girl finds herself in a world where everyone is in a Yuri relationship. And yet, I bet there isn’t a single lesbian. /eyeroll./

Ami-chan no Nikki (あみちゃんの日記) is a new Galette publication. Yatosaki Haru’s school diary about the prettiest girl in school, is now a collected volume.

Asumi-chan ha Rezu Fuuzoku ni Kyoumi ga Arimasu! (彩純ちゃんはレズ風俗に興味があります!) is a Comic Yuri Hime manga about a woman who…you know what? It’s about sex. The plot is meaningless. It’s just about sex.

Meijou Shigatai Kanojo to, Ano Goro Okubyoudatta Watashi no Hanashi (名状しがたい彼女と、あの頃臆病だった私の話) is a horror series about a withdrawn girl who meets a woman who manipulates monsters.

UDON Entertainment has announced the project I just finished up, Rose of Versailles Episodes, the final 4 “new” volumes of Riyoko Ikeda’s epic. These volumes were drawn for the 40th anniversary of the series, and will be released here as a 2-volume set. They are *fantastic* and I know you will love them. ^_^

Via Comic Natalie, Volume 3 of a series I hadn’t been following at all, Yuri de Naru ♥ Espoir (ゆりでなる♥えすぽわーる), a sory of a girl who draws little Yuri scenarios about women she sees, but who is herself fated to return home and marry, is on sale now and all the various stores in Japan where it can be found are selling it with special goods.

Ane no Shinyuu, Watashi no Koibito (姉の親友、私の恋人。) is, exactly as it sounds, about a love triangle between two sisters and the older sister’s friend, which debuts in Vol. 94 of Kadokawa’s Dengeki Daiouji magazine.

I haven’t had  a chance to read Volume 1 yet, but Volume 2 of the schoolgirl x mermaid Yuri, Watashi o Tabetai, Hitodenashi (私を喰べたい、ひとでなし) is on Japanese shelves.

And surely this deserve an award for squeezing in a few extra current trends, Kukkorose no Himekishi to Nari, Yuri Shoukan de Hataraku koto ni Narimashita (くっ殺せの姫騎士となり、百合娼館で働くことになりました。 ) which I am reading as “To become a female knight I am working in a Yuri brothel,” because omg, no one has lick of imagination, good heavens. <– This is me rolling my eyes so hard I strained them.

Yuri LNs

Via Yurimother, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Vol. 2 has hit shelves. According to RightStuf, Volume 3 is looking at a November release date.

Yuri Anime

ANN’s Alex Mateo has the trailer and news about the upcoming Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie: Walpurgisnacht: Rising .

And Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story 2nd Season -Eve of Awakening- OP has premiered and Rafael Antonio Pineda at ANN has details.

I’m also going to draw your attention to Caitlin Moore’s review of Stellvia, an anime that was pretty big in Yuri fandom in the 00s but has been lost to time.  I reviewed it as it came out here, and there was a lot to like and some significant stuff to hate. It has long painful character arcs and the grandest coming out in anime. It’s totally worth a rewatch – and you can get the complete series from Discotek!

Yuri Games

Alex Mateo has the detes on Blue Reflection: Second Light with trailer, on ANN.

Via Yuri Navi, Yuri Visual Novel FATAL TWELVE is now available on Switch.

Via press release, Symbiotic Love – Yuri Visual Novel from White Dew Games and Kikai Digital, is now on Steam!

Hara Yukiko’s, Cocoon, Entwined, Volume 3 hits shelves later this month from the folks at Yen Press. I’ve got V4 next up in Japanese and I’m pretty sure it’s going to end just right. ^_^

Nakatani Nio’s Farewell, My Alter, also from Yen Press, is out now. This is her short story collection from the Éclair anthologies and some originals.

Kodama Naoko’s Day of Love At Seagull Villa, Volume 3, wraps up the series in early August.

Via Comic Natalie, Galette WORKS has released a new collection, Anoko no Hana ga Hoshi (あのこの花が欲しい), by Asuba Yui. As I mentioned yesterday, every collected volume that come out of Galette is a mark of perseverance and effort in trying times!  Galette No. 19 (ガレット No.19) in paper has gone up for order on Galette’s Fantia site.

Also from Comic Natalie an android x human story is staring up in Comic Yuri Hime, Android ha Keiken Ninzuu ni Hairimasuka?? (アンドロイドは経験人数に入りますか??)

Wada Shinji is spinning in his grave, as Sukeban Deka is getting a spin-off manga. He killed Saki off at the end of the manga, but cannot kill off corporate greed. ^_^; Rafael Antonia Pineda at ANN gives us the news of who and what the new manga will be.

Yuri Webcomics  & Doujinshi

In Yuri online comic news, YNN Correspondent Evie Starcross wants you to know that “Ratana Satis’s “Soul Drifters” has only 2 chapters left & they just released info about their next upcoming webcomic titled “Beast Knights” & the 3 new main characters are Lunar (Bunny Woman), Akela (Wolf Woman), & Synne (?). ” Thanks, Evie!

Lilyka has a new Yuri doujinshi for sale, The Story of Inhuman Girls, by Siu Yosiujima. “From fairies and mermaids to witches and zombies, The Story of Inhuman Girls, is sure to have a little of something for everyone.”

Yuri Light Novels

Otherside Picnic, Volume 5 is headed our way next month! Since Bookwalker’s running a sale, I’ve linked to it there. ^_^

The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Volume 2 is on Global Bookwalker, with coin boost this week!

I’m reading End Blue (エンドブルー) by Iruma Hitoma with illustrations by Nakatani Nio and stumbled across this voiced ad for it on Youtube!

Inori-sensei noted in a recent Pixiv fanbox post that there are now two free indy-developed browser scenario games for I’m in Love With the Villainess:
Revolution Lily!? ~Claire-sama’s Birthday Party~  and Revolution Lily!? ~Desert Island where can’t escape without ??~.  I started the first one and was awed by it’s wholesomeness. I hope to finish it up this week. ^_^

Yuri Anime

While we’re talking Executioner and Her Way of Life, let’s not forget that an anime of this grim, yet interestingly built world, is headed our way in 2022. YNN’s Rafael Antonia Pineda has the details and trailer. Thanks to everyone who kept me abreast of this news! (Yeah, pun intended.)

CR New’s Paul Chapman invites us to watch the Blue Reflection Ray creditless ED for some quiet time between the characters.

Komatsu-san has a trailer for the Tropical Rouge Precure movie that brings back some old friends from Heartcatch Precure! Amazingly, I am still watching Tropical Rouge Precure…. ^_^

Other News

I want to shout out to Kaelan Ramos on Twitter who deftly noted that memes about Takeuchi Naoko being a starving, lonely artist when she drew Sailor Moon is incorrect, and that “celebrating” women by not actually crediting them for their and work is a bullshitty and demeaning thing to do.

And, to that end, why not listen to the recorded session for No Friend to Girls: Kawabata Yasunari, Shōjo no tomo and the Appropriation of Girls’ Culture, to see how Kawabata Yasunari took Nakazato Tsuneko’s work and put his name on it.

In happier news, Zombieland Saga Revenge is getting an exhibit (and pop-up shop, of course) in Harajuku. Choo Sum Lee has the scoop on ANN!

Last, but not least, Takarazuka’s never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down. ^_^

Yuri Manga

JK to Tomodachi no Okan (JKとともだちのオカン) is clearly a comedy, about young woman who is in love with her male friend’s mother. But here’s something fun – you can get it in hardcover. Why? I have no idea, so I might just….. ^_^

Via Comic Natalie, Yuri ni Hasamarete, Esper!, Volume 1, (百合に挟まれて、エスパー!) is another comedy manga, this one about a girl who can read the Yuri-ful thoughts of her classmates.

Via Yurimother, Aquatope of White Sand manga will be drawn by Sakuragi Ren. The anime has already premiered on Crunchyroll.

Via Comic Natalie, Spica wo Tsukumaete (スピカをつかまえて) has begun in Comic Yuri Hime. It’s a disciplinary committee president x gal story drawn by Iwami Kyouko. I really like Iwami’s work and hold hope that this will exceed its opener.

Just gonna busk – again for Odoriba ni Skirt ga Naru (踊り場にスカートが鳴る) because this is an outstandingly lovely story about dancing and body shame.

Yuri Network News – (百合ネットワークニュース) – July 3rd, 2021

July 3rd, 2021

Yuri Manga

We had a bunch of new license this week from Seven Seas!

Monologue Woven for You by Syu Yasaka, is “a full-color manga series about two young women falling in love despite their conflicting experiences with the stage.” This was a fast license, I hadn’t even had a chance to read this yet! I’ll bump it up on the to-read pile. ^_^

Gunbured x Sisters about a vampire and warrior nun, by Wataru Mitogawa, creator of  Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet.

I had a look at this in Japanese last year, but now you’ll be able to read the My Next Life As A Villainess Side Story: Girl’s Patch. This came out from Ichijinsha and while the Yuri doesn’t burn the pages or anything, it was still a really nice book. ^_^

From Comic Yuri Hime comes this one-shot, 5 Seconds Before a Witch Falls in Love by Zeniko Sumiya about enemies who make a nice couple. ^_^

And my favorite license of the bunch, Hello, Melancholic! by Ohsawa Yayoi. I loved this series and am thrilled we’re getting some of Ohsawa-sensei’s work.

Late yesterday they licensed Even If It Was Just Once, I Regret It by Miyahara Miyako, about a landlady trading rent for favors, and the relationship that develops between her tenant.

Kodansha is re-releasing Princess Knight by Osamu Tezuka on Kindle. A new chance to get the first manga Girl Prince!

ANN’s Crystalyn Hodgkin’s wants you to know that FLOWERCHILD’s Warikitta Kankei Desu kara (割り切った関係ですから。) is coming to an end in Comic Yuri Hime.

We’ve added Yen Press’s The Whole of Humanity Has Gone Yuri Except For Me to the Yuricon Store. This alternate-world scifi hits shelves later this month.

Some folks expressed interest, so I added the Galette Illustration Book 01 to the digital listings on the Yuricon Store, with links to it on Amazon and Amazon JP.

Whisper Me A Love Song, Volume 3 hit shelves this week. Give me all the girl band Yuri!

Yuri Doujinshi

Lilika is running a July 4th weekend event. 20% off selected items with the code US21. And they’ve uploaded the video of the Mintaro live event, so catch that at your leisure for $4.95. ^_^

Anime News

Funimation has picked up Kageki Shoujo, Alex Mateo on ANN has the scoop on this Takarazuka-inspired anime. Crunchyroll is streaming The Aquatope on the White Sand and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, says CR’s Kyle Cardine.

Crunchyroll will be also streaming My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! X.

There’s a diminishing chance of Yuri, but Rafael Antonio Pineda at ANN has news that Shin Ikki Tousen will be getting an anime next year.

Paul Chapman at CR News wants you to know that the anime spin-off of a game spin-off of a line of dolls has a new short form web anime spin-off, Assault Lily FRUITS.

Yuri Visual Novel

Letters From a Rainy Day -Oceans and Lace- a “bittersweet sapphic story of a romance that begins with blackmail” has launched and is on sale this week on Steam.

Other News

Molly Ostertag looked at the value queer readings of stories offer in Queer readings of The Lord of the Rings are not accidents for Polygon.

Leslie Feinberg’s ground-breaking queer book Stone Butch Blues is available for free on her website as a pdf, or in print from Lulu at cost.
