We have some new titles on the Yuricon Store!

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Deluxe Edition, Volume 5 hits shelves next month and I cannot wait for an end of the world which is far gentler than that which we are headed into.

If you have not read it, please do give The Moon On A Rainy Night, Volume 5  a read. Things are changing here in ways that are remarkable. I love this story so much.

We’ve also added Kiss the Scars of the Girls, Volume 1, which was reviewed here by Christian LeBlanc.

Lastly, Yukidoke to Agapanthus, Volume 2 (雪解けとアガパンサス) continues a story of which I reviewed the first volume of here on Okazu. Will Summer be thawed by Spring? Yes, obviously. ^_^

There is a delay with The Rose of Versailles Episodes, Manga, Volume 1, which contains the 40th anniversary comics for the series. I am amazed at the complications this series has faced, falling through every single possible crack in all the awards it could possibly ever have been eligible for. This absolute fucking classic of manga has been utterly ignored by the Eisners. It’s a crime, honestly. But I beg you to please get this volume. It is SO worth it.

Great news for Yuri fans in France, via YNN Correspondent Manga’Albine. Meian has licensed This Monster Wants To Eat Me, Volumes 1 & 2 are on their site so far. Meian also put together a list of their French-language Yuri licenses on Twitter that is very impressive!

More evidence that Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta is definitely being set up for success. My local Kino had both volumes of the series front and center on their Pride month display and had acrylic art plates (which I absolutely might have bought but they were $80 each and I just couldn’t,_ so I bought a couple of blind box pins and got them in a promotional bag! YNN Correspondent An Over Acheiving Potato noticed the “retro music” soundtrack CD for the series on store shelves. I am delighted at this and wonder if this could lead to a live-action drama, given the complexity of licensing any of the music.

And, for those folks in Tokyo, there is a Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta cafe in Tower Records in Omotesando. Do let us know how it is!

Comic Natalie tells ups about Bodokan (ボドカン) that takes place in a prison where the female prisoners” play boardgames and form Yuri couples.” Points for the cops being literal pigs. Check out a sample chapter on Comic Walker in Japanese.

Anime News

Anime Expo hasn’t brought us much in way of manga, but the anime news is good.

A Rose of Versailles anime movie has been announced for 2025. It looks awfully like the Rose of Versailles anime movie I saw a trailer for at the Tokyo Animation Fair a decade ago. Hrm… Anyway, check out the trailer on the official Twitter account and sit up a bit straighter when you hear that they picked Sawashiro Miyuki as Oscar and Hirano Aya as Marie Antoinette. Nice choices.

Viz Media announced an anime (and probably more manga) license for RWBY, which…good! It’s a series I have stuck with since the beginning and deserves to get a decent end. Plus, Blake and Yang are kind cute together. ^_^

Momentary Lily premiered and ANN’s MrAJCosplay said of it, “I felt like I was having keys dangled in my face while multicolored bleach was poured into my eyes.” So, exactly what we expected, then ^_^

On the 40th Anniversary of  Magical Angel Creamy Mami, Studio Pierrot announced that they are planning a new Magical Girl series. Crystalynn Hodgkins has the details on ANN.

Rafael Antonio Pineda says that Crunchyroll will be adding Go! Princess Precure and Witchy Precure (presumably ahead of streaming the new Mahoutsukai Precure Mirai sequel anime). I will continue to pine for a Heartcatch sequel.

Yuri Live-Action

Based on Sal Jiang’s Shakaijin Yuri rom-com of the same name, Ayaka-chan ha Hiroko-sempai ni Koishiteru (彩香ちゃんは弘子先輩に恋してる) Live-Action series has premiered on GagaOOLala and TVer.jp.

Yuri Apparel is Back in the Yuricon Store!

After a number of delays, we have returned our most popular shirts to the Yuricon Store on Printify!

To make it easier for me to sell them, I am also added them back to the Yuricon Store under Yuri Apparel. Right now, we have the incredibly popular 50 Years of Yuri Couples T-Shirt and the 100 Years of Yuri T-shirt, which comes in 7https://www.yuricon.com/product-category/yuri-apparel/ colors. All shirts are available in sizes Small to 3X.

Once everything is back up, I’ll think about some new designs…maybe featuring some of the art for By Your Side.

Other News

Not Yuri in the slightest, I want to just give my recommendation to The Apothecary Diaries light novels. They are super fun, great summer reading. Volume 1 is out now and Volume 2 is headed our way in August. This is one of those rare series that my wife and I agree upon.

Also notable, this weekend at Anime Expo, an anime for award-winning manga Witch Hat Atelier was announced. This series is something I have long be meaning to read, so maybe I’ll finally get around to it now. ^_^Alex Mateo has the news on ANN.

ANN’s Bamboo Dong reports on an AX panel of interest in The Beauty of Takarazuka Transcends Borders.

Yuri Live Action

Ayaka Is In Love With Hiroko, based on Sal Jiang’s manga of the same name (of which I have reviewed Volume 1 and Volume 2 here on Okazu) is getting a live-action series and is pounding the internets with updates. ANN’s Crystalyn Hodgkins has news of the premiere of the opening theme and  ending theme for the series.

This series is meant as a comedy, so I think the character of Hiroko is going to be key to the success of the thing, as she is the overtly gay character. Happily, the trailer seems like she’s going to be handled well enough by Mori Kana.

Okazu Staffer Frank Hecker notes that this series will be getting an international release with subtitles on the GagaOOLala pan-asian LGBTQ+ media streaming service, on July 5th.

Some Thai GL news from Frank, as well. The Secret Of Us, Episode 1 is up on Youtube! This appears to be  story of a professional women rekindling a love with a former lover who had broken her heart.

Yuri Manga

ANN’s Rafael Antonio Pineda wants you to know that Usui Shio has a new series beginning in Comic Yuri Hime, which looks like a stark departure from her recent gentle romances. Bokura no Ai wa Kimochi Warui, is yet another fetish relationship in a magazine that has become increasingly laden with them among the fantasy stories.

Rafael also has the sad news that Yuri Is My Job manga is on indefinite hiatus as the author is in ill health. We all wish Miman-sensei a speedy recovery.

Yuri Anime

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has been released in a smexy Steelbook Blu-ray set. Season 1 and Season 2 are up on the Yuricon store!

Dollip Daze has hosted a Q&A with the English voice cast for I’m In Love With The Villianess. Check it out on Youtube.

Whisper Me A Love Song continues to have production issues through Episode 10. I’m only mentioning this here, because I do feel that I’m In Love With The Villainess had a visibly very low production budget and I really hope Ichijinsha stops trying to make anime on a shoestring. It makes it harder to tell people that it’s worth it to watch. Alex Mateo has details on ANN.

On the premise that all PreCure are of interest to Okazu fans (which may be a stretch, I know, but oh well) Anita Tai wants you to know that the Wonderful PreCure! Movie theme song has been released. This movie will have appearances from characters from Hirogaru and Mahou Tsukai PreCure series. I am shocked, honestly that I am still watching and enjoying Wonderful Precure! Given the premise I didn’t think I’d last a week, but here we are and I’m still watching.

Continuing the stretch, let’s talk Sound Euphonium, for a bit. Episode 12 aired and it was an *amazing* episode, except for one fatal flaw that I cannot forgive. I promise to discuss in  future review. But today, let’s look at what Ken Iikura-Gross has to say on ANN, about the novel author’s reaction to the episode. It is a bit interesting and may make me seek out the manga.

Stilllll stretching, Alex Mateo on ANN notes that Bad Girl manga is getting an anime. Let’s cut to the chase here – good girl pretending to be delinquent in a Mangatime Kirara Carat manga series, so…good chance on Yuri-adjacency.

Yuricon/Okazu trivia time. Back in the late 1990s when we had a Yuricon Mailing List on Yahoo groups, I ran a poll about people’s favorite Yuri character. The very first winner of that poll was….Priss from Bubblegum Crisis. For more than a decade after that, I would periodically receive angry ranting emails, “explaining” to me that Priss was not a lesbian, goddammit, how DARE I think so. The fact that this was not my personal choice aside, it was always so sad/funny how angry people got at that. Anyway. I watched Crisis and Crash and 2040 and Priss is bi, get over it. ^_^

Udon Entertainment is hosting Bubblegum Crisis and Crash (and Gunsmith Cats /loud throat-clearing, Misty/) creator Sonoda Kenichi at San Diego Comic Con to mark the publication of Bubblegum Crisis: Complete Archive Artbook. Rafael Antonio Pineda has details on ANN.

Yuri Live Action

Stardust Telepath is getting a live-action TV drama! With the girls looking far more age-appropriate than the infantilized moe design of the original manga, it’s probably going to feel way more intimate and Yuri. Komatsu-san over at Crunchyroll News has the details and the trailer. You can follow the official account on Twitter.

YNN Staff Writer Matt Marcus wants you to know Ohsawa Yayoi has drawn an illustration of the characters for the live-action stage play of one of her short Yuri manga, Koko kara tsuredashite 〜 jigoku no HELL hen 〜
(ココから連れ出して 〜地獄のHELL変〜), which is running this weekend. You can read some of the comic in her posts on Twitter.

Via Comic Natalie, we have more cast announcements from the upcoming TV drama abased on Sal Jiang’s comic Ayaka-chan ha Hiroko-sempai ni Koishiteru (彩香ちゃんは弘子先輩に恋してる).

Yuri Manga

Via Sr. YNN Correspondent Cryssoberl, Citrus+, Volume 7 is getting a special edition from Ichijinsha. You can find that and a lot of other limited goods on Ichijinsha’s Comic Yuri Hime Store. Okazu Staff Matt Marcus adds that Oshichalle is running a Citrus + lottery for special goods, as well.

Yuri Events

For folks in Japan, July will see the group art show for four Galette magazine artists in Kichioji, Tokyo. July 17-22, at the Sabineko Gallery, art by 4 Yuri artists, Hakamada Mera, Morinaga Milk, Yatosaki Haru and Yorita Miyuki will be displayed for the Shoujo to Shoujo ~ Yuri Sakka Yonnin Ten (百合作家4人展).

Girls Love Fest 41 will be happening on June 30, in the Keikyu Kamata/Ota Ward Industrial Plaza PiO, Ota Ward, Tokyo, once again. 41 shows, wow!

I spoke last night with the amazing folks at BlymeCon, Brazil’s BL convention, about the history of BL and Yuri. They are going to be subtitling my presentation in Portugese for the event later this summer!

I’ll be at AnimeNYC in the Artist Alley as a Guest. Join myself, TJ ‘Tiff’ Ferentini, Nicole Roderick, Jacqueline Hung as we talk about “The Rise of Queer Manga.”

And I will be doing a presentation of that same name for CitrusCon, also an online BL convention. It has been fantastic to me that so many BL cons are open now to discussion of Yuri, and LGBTQ+ manga and media. This is an incredible direction for fandom.

If you’d like to have your event or panel listed here – or you’d like me to speak at your event, let me know through the Yuricon Contact Form. ^_^

Yuri Anime

Fujimoto Tatsuki’s Look Back anime movie premiered at the Annecy Film Festival and was “warmly received by the (very demanding) audience of the biggest animation festival in the world.” Matthieu Pinon has the report on ANN. I very much look forward to seeing this. In a room, by myself, with tissues pressed to my face as I bawl my head off. (T_T)

Once again, from Matt, The Executioner and Her Way of Life Premium Blu-Ray Box Set is shipping in August from Sentai Filmworks.

Cryssoberyl is back with news from Manga Mogura that the Shy anime will have a Season 2. Paul Chapman over at Crunchyroll News says that a Season 1 recap as functioning a trailer for the upcoming S2.

I’m still not entirely sure, but am willing to be convinced, that this will be Yuri, but CR News’ Darryl Harding reports on a key visual for Momentary Lily.

Komatsu-san also has the news that all 4 of the original cast members for Mahoutsukai PreCure will be returning to their roles in the Mahoutsukai PreCure Mirai Days sequel.  This appears to shift Mirai from midde school to college-aged. Clearly Toei has found it’s new cottage industry, aging up the Cures. ^_^

Yuri Doujinshi

Once again, via Matt, he’s discovered a Yuri doujishi circle, YURI HUB, on Melonbooks that includes Inui Ayu and a few other creators’ works. Some of these are available as digital downloads (for which you will need Melonbooks’ proprietary reader, but they make that available when you dl the doujinshi.) Most of these have sample pages in Japanese for you to check out.

Other News

While I was at Kinokuniya in Edgewater, NJ, I noticed this awesome Pride Month display. Note Arai Sumiko’s manga Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta, prominently displayed. I’ll get back to that in a second. So I walked in and the staffer (Hi Yaz!) commented that they were going to put my book on the display – they are down to the last copy. So, I signed it. ^_^ If you get there and it’s gone, ask them – they’ll order more.

As my final thought, I want to note that Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta, Volumes 1 and 2 are displayed here, on an aisle endcap and on the shelves. Last night on Bluesky someone commented that they thought this series was about to become HUGE, with a live-action, and other media. Based on this store alone, I am inclined to agree. I have been going to this store (and all the other stores that have occupied this space, Sanseido and even Asahiya back in the day) for decades and I have only seen this level of saturation for massively popular Shonen Jump titles. This series is being primed to be huge. We’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled.

In the meantime, I am also running a Pride Month/2nd Birthday special on By Your Side” The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga. My book with a signed bookplate and an original art print by Rica Takshima! Limited supplies, so check it out if you can’t get to a Kinokuniya. ^_^

Yuri Manga

On the Yuricon Store this week:

The Moon On A Rainy Night, Volume 5 hits shelves this week! Do not miss this wonderful story by Kuzushiro from Kodansha.

I Can’t Say No to the Lonely Girl, Volume 2 also hits shelves this week.  While the premise was a bit sus, I will continue to promise that it does get better and ends in a terrific place. Just bear with this volume. ^_^;

How Do I Turn My Best Friend Into My Girlfriend?, Volume 2 by Syu Yasaka will hit shelves in September, which seems impossibly far away, but will be here all too soon.

Twinstar Cyclone Runaway, Volume 1 (ツインスター・サイクロン・ランナウェイ) is the “comicalized” version of an award-winning story from the Literary Yuri Short Story Contest run on Pixiv annually. It tells a science fiction story of a young woman who is looking for a marital partner so she can go out and fish (something only married partners do on this world,) and the restaurant server (which is sort of meant to explain the incongruent maid costume) who joins her. It was a fine short story, I guess we’ll see what it becomes as a manga.

Via Comic Natalie, V Drive (Vドライブ!) is about a girl who joins a talent agency that is a front for saving the earth from alien invasion and is paired with someone who can’t stand her, but with whom she is in” Business Yuri” relationship on stage. Throwing everything at the wall to see if anything sticks, I guess. ^_^ Check out a sample chapter in Japanese on Comic K.

Genkai OL to Joshidai-sei ga Rei Rei Suru Hanashi (限界OLと女子大生が〇〇する話) is about an office worker and a student  who become friends, then more. Check out a sample chapter in Japanese on Comic Walker.

Yuri Drama CD

We’ve added the Kininatteru Hito Ga Otoko Janakatta Drama CD, Special Edition (ドラマCD 気になってる人が男じゃなかった) to the Yuricon Store. How exciting that Drama CDs are making a comeback. This is particularly a fun one as the entire premise is about retro music. ^_^

Yuri Live-Action

Big news from Sal Jiang, creator of Black & White! Her office romantic comedy Ayaka-chan ha Hiroko-sempai ni Koshiteru is being made into a live action drama for Japanese TV. (Yet again confirming my long-held belief that Josei work is almost always more suited to live-action than anime.)  This will begin next month on several JP networks and I’ll be looking for some way to watch this without bending the rules of time and space. ^_^ I have reviewed Volume 1 and Volume 2 here on Okazu, but have not yet had a chance to read Volume 3. I’ll bump it up, now.

Sailor Moon News

Netflix has announced that Sailor Moon Cosmos will be headed our way in August. ANN’s Egan Loo has details. Fans are, predictably, relived that we’ll get the final two movies of the Crystal series.

Now. Wouldn’t it be cool if the next time they redo the anime, Toei doesn’t rush or shortchange it, puts directors on it that understand the franchise and the US localizer doesn’t hire toxic asshats to handle talent? Just saying, I would like to think this series will one day actually get a chance to shine.

Yuri Visual Novels

Via YNN Correspondent Patricia B, Studio Élan has announced two new VNs!

A Tithe In Blood, is a A dark yuri visual novel, about a quiet university student who discovers blood magic in the depths of her grief. Stepping into a world she little understands, Honoka finds unexpected love, and inadvertantly [sic] sets in motion a deadly series of events.” Wishlist on Steam or download on Itch.io. Trailer is up on Youtube!

“After getting lost in a blizzard you find yourself in Rainbow Valley—a strange mountain with even stranger villagers.” Wishlist Rainbow Valley on Steam. Creator Izzy calls Rainbow Valley a “cute dating sim, set in a secluded mountain village.”

Other News

In honor of Pride Month, the outstanding documentary about Queer Comics, No Straight Lines is streaming for free on US PBS (Public Broadcasting Stations). If you have not seen it, I hope you will make time for it, it is fantastic. I reviewed it back in 2021 and it is even more important as we lost more of our first-gen folks this year, including the incomparable Trina Robbins.

In fantastic news, Anime NYC, The Japan Society and star anime journalist and opinion-maker Deb Aoki announce the creation of the North American Manga Awards! I know Deb’s been working on this for years and it’s amazing that it finally is off the ground. With manga accounting for almost half of comics sales in the US and only just this year being eligible for Eisner Awards outside the English Edition of International Comic (Asia) category, it’s been time for a long time that we have our own award. Congrats to all the judges and to everyone involved. I’m looking forward to the results. Get the details on ANN from Alex Mateo about this long-anticipated award.

This week’s fun fact, Watashi no Oshi ha Akuyaku Reijou in this month’s Comic Yuri Hime is the second Yuri manga reference to Japanese Edo-period costume drama television series Mito Koumon. The first was Fujieda Miyabi’s Iono-sama Fanatics. (Another series that just did not get the chance it deserved through bad timing and organizational incompetence.)

Yuri Manga

Viz is continuing to carve and important Josei niche with the license of Pink Candy Kiss, by Ami Uozumi, to be released Spring 2025. Thanks to Sr. YNN Correspondent Sean G for that catch!

Via YNN Correspondent Matt Marcus, Shoujo Crave on Twitter posted that the creator of Sono Uruwashiki Hito ha (そのうるわしきひとは、) Mame Zakana, has confirmed that this is a Yuri title – the first to run in Hana to Yume magazine in decades.

I cannot conjecture why, but Fantia, Toranoana’s crowdfunding site is no longer accepting Mastercard and Visa, so if you are outside of Japan, you will be getting frantic emails to change your payment scheme to Amex or Diners Club (eyeroll). I have switched to Galette magazine’s Pixiv Fanbox, which I am not entirely thrilled about, but that puts all the folks I follow and support on one system, so yay, I guess. Do yourself a favor and make sure you’ve got your copies of No. 30 and the 4th illustration book first.

Via YNN Senior Correspondent Ashley, Baka Onna 26 o’clock, Volume 1 (バカ女26時 1) is like GUNJO, ” without guilt (or forethought).” Two women kills their husbands and take to the road! Hopefully we’ll be getting a review soon.
