Maria-sama ga Miteru Drama CD 10: Nakakiyono/Answer

December 18th, 2006

For the 10th Maria-sama ga Miteru CD, Nakakiyono, we move backwards in time, away from the just-graduated Youko, Sei and Eriko, to midwinter and the long first night of the year.

Like most of the Marimite Drama CDs, Nakakiyono follows the novel more closely than either the anime or the manga.

We follow Yumi as she goes on her hatsumode, her first shrine visit of the year, with Sei and as Sei tricks her into coming to Sachiko’s home for a stayover. Yumi does have a line remonstrating with Sei for flirting with the miko at the shrine, btw. ^_^

We also manage a little extra Sayako-obasama time in the CD, completely with adorable pout. ^_^

The story is a shortened version of the events in Rosa Canina, so for more detail, please feel free to check out the relevant notes from the fourth novel. ^_^

A second story, Answer, is included on this disk. Answer is the delightful tale of how the former Rosa Chinensis, Foetida and Gigantea teamed up to manipulate Youko into choosing Sachiko for her souer. I cannot recommend this track enough. It’s freakin’ hysterical.

As in the anime, the former Rosa Gigantea is played by Takayama Minami. Rosa Chinensis is voiced by Katsuki Masako (who is most notable among the Yuri crowd for playing Sailor Neptune/Kaioh Michiru) and to add to the old girl feel of the story, the one and only Mitsuishi Kotono, (Tsukino Usagi/Sailor Moon and many other roles) plays the former Rosa Foetida. Let me remind you at this point, that Shinohara Emi, who voices Youko, was Makoto/Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon. You can actually FEEL the atmosphere of “we’ve been doing this a loooooong time, let’s have a little fun here” as they do their roles. At one point, the former Rosas are cracking jokes at Youko’s expense and the seiyuu are laughing so hard and so honestly, you can just about see Mitsuishi Kotono leaning on Takayama Minami for support.

Simply brilliant.

The Yuri quotient was a little low on this one, but there’s always Yumi lovingly looking at kimono-clad Sachiko, and the line about Sei not flirting. The moments might be small, but they are precious. ^_^

So, once again, listening to a Marimite Drama CD is completely worth time and money – and this time doubly worth it for the stroll down memory lane with some truly excellent VAs.

Yuri Anime: Maria-sama ga Miteru OAV 1, Vacation of the Lambs

December 17th, 2006

Buy the raw, untranslated collector’s (and therefore more expensive) edition of the Maria-sama ga Miteru OAV, Volume 1: Kohitsujitachi no Kyuuka (Vacation of the Lambs)? What are you, insane?

You betcha. ^_^

The outside has a lovely clear plastic cover with Yumi and Sachiko holding hands, over the actual cover that has a red rose and “La Vierge Marie vous Regarde”, as you can see in the picture above.

Inside is a faux-leather novel cover with the Lillian seal on one side and the text logo for “Maria-sama ga Miteru” on the other, with a very cute leaf bookmark.

There is also a Lillian folder with postcards – original art by Hibiki Reine of Yumi and Sachiko holding hands, of Yumi and Sachiko separately, of the DVD cover and the three rose families from the opening credits.

The DVD cover is, IMO not such a great picture, but it does show a happily embracing Yumi and Sachiko. And for once, the title of the story actually sounds *worse* in French. ^_^ The booklet that comes with the DVD has character designs for all the characters.

I thought it the anime was excellent. They kept “Pastel Pure” as the OP, which made me glad, and they managed to actually de-angst what is really the last of the angsty Yumi novels. Yes, they cut stuff out to fit it, and a very few changes were made – but nothing of consequence and nothing that radically altered the story. In general, a very decent adaptation.

My *only* complaint…we don’t get to see/hear Touko play the violin. I wonder why, since we get all the other performances. And I am thrilled no end that Kashiwagi exlpains that Great-Grandmother isn’t infirm, she’s just pissed. (Although, you don’t get the full explanation, just a truncated one. )

They definitely upped the touchy-feelyness of the story, leaving in pretty much every embrace and hand/arm holding. There was a moment when Sachiko and Yumi decide to go to the party that was animated exactly the way kiss scenes are done – close up, then the a view from far away, which cued up the “romantic moment” tag in my head. The image stands out in my mind, because the surroundings are animated with a lot of detail and color. It’ll make a nice screencap.

Last night I watched it for the third time (the first straight through, the second for a script check and the third with the seiyuu commentary. The seiyuu present are Ueda Kana (Yumi), Itou Miki (Sachiko) and Ikezawa Haruna (Yoshino) and it’s pretty much like sitting in the middle of them as they watch what’s going on (or don’t, when they get distracted.) They wander in an out of talking about the characters as if they were real, as if they actual are the characters, and as if they are just three women sitting around watching an anime. ^_^ They discuss Mount Fuji, gasp and squeal at key points (point out the service) and laugh about random events in the story. It’s a very relaxed, not at all profound, commentary – and the bits I was able to follow were thoroughly enjoyable.

As is usual for an OAV, it’s better quality animation than the TV series. And if you check out the credits a few familiar names scroll by – including Bee Train. The character designs are strong – stronger than I had feared. I was particularly concerned with Sachiko because of the DVD cover picture, but she looks great throughout. And when the Yamayurikai all show up in day clothes, they somehow managed to convey their personalities in what they are wearing. (I *will* be annoyed about one of the character designs for the next OAV, be warned. Oh…and what was with Yuuki’s hair??)

The characters all remain charming. Three times I’ve watched it, and three times, I’ve grinned like a loon at the end.

As I always say, this series will never be half as popular with the lowest common denominator as Strawberry Panic, which is yet another good sign that Marimite is really quality in every way. ^_^

Service – 1 for fetishism, 9 for gooping like a loon at the screen because you’re a total fan.

Good story, wonderful characters, romantic without being slimy and generally fun. Total thumbs up for everything – the goods, the DVD, even the box.

Gunsmith Cats Burst Manga, Volume 1

December 15th, 2006

Gunsmith Cats Burst has been picked up by Dark Horse Comics, but as I’ve been reading the Japanese editions, I thought this series would make a pleasant ending to no schoolgirls week, ahead of the English edition coming out in March.

I also note I never reviewed the original Gunsmith Cats manga, or the OAV anime. This will be remedied in the future.

In the meantime, having never reviewed the old versions, let me talk about the new!

Gunsmith Cats is the name of a series that is primarily devoted to three things: guns; cars; and women in various states of (un)dress. All three of these things are wrapped in whimsical, yet in incredibly violent and grim surroundings. The story follows the adventures of Irene “Rally” Vincent, bounty hunter and gunsmith, and her munitions expert partner and friend, Minnie May Hopkins. Rally and May are joined in their world by a variety of colorful characters, on both sides of the law.

While the series is primarily set in Chicago, which is explored in some detail, what really stands out in this series is the amazing (and slightly tedious) level of detail with which the specs of both cars and guns are discussed. If you know what I mean then, you know what I mean. ;-)

So, GSC Burst is more of the usual shenanigans with Rally, May, Becky and Misty and the usual gang of criminals, runaways, scofflaws and crazies. Rally tracks down wanted criminals, gets into car chases and shootouts, Becky gets information and complains Rally doesn’t pay her, and Misty sort of likes Rally. Bean Bandit stands around looking large and can’t be killed. You know – the usual. ^_^

Yuri-wise, there’s Misty. Her character description points out that she’s got strong feelings for Rally, sort of. (And in the past and in a later volume, there’s something else, but I’ll get there when I get there.) And there’s Rally. I don’t care if there is not a single iota of proof, Rally’s gay. I have it from a childhood friend of Sonoda’s that he described Rally as being gay, but more in love with her car and her gun than anything else. Even if this childhood friend was lying through his teeth, I think that sums Rally up perfectly.

BTW, did you know Becky drove a BWM 200 Turbo? Neither did I, but that piece of information is SO crucial, it’s in her character description. ^_^

The first story starts off with a half-dressed blonde conning Rally into doing something for which she gets shot at. That’s all, I think, you need to know about Rally. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 8 I like Sonoda’s art. It’s neat and clean and easy to follow, with good action.
Characters – 8
Story – 7 If you like guns and cars and half-dressed women, 10.
Yuri – 1 Implications, wishful thinking and Yuridar.
Service – 4 Yes, underwear, yes. But in almost all cases, except for that of the improbably youthful-looking May, it’s also all adult women’s bodies and only a little irritating.

Overall – 7

1. Note I never mention Rally and May as a potential couple. That is because they aren’t. It’s a stupid pairing.

2. If you would like to see Rally paired with a much better match, someone who can match her shot for shot, please feel free to visit my GSC fanfic, Back in the Saddle (adult content warning), for which I am, even as you read this, writing a sequel. ‘Cause I want to see Rally with a cool girlfriend, too. ^_^

American Comic: Y The Last Man

December 14th, 2006

The American comic Y, The Last Man has been on my “to review” list for months and months, but I just never quite found the time. I think “Anything at all but not another schoolgirl, I beg you!” week is the perfect time, don’t you?

Let me preface with review with the statement that I think, in general, this is a pretty good series. I needed to say that first, because most of my comments are going to be negative and it will sound like I hated the series…when, in fact, I didn’t.

To begin with, the plot of Y, The Last Man is a non-Eva post-apocalyptic world. One day, quite suddenly, all the males in the world drop dead. Except one. Hence the title.

The “Last Man” is Yorick. And here is my first complaint.

I can totally understand the appeal of the “everyman” character as a lead. I really can. What I can NOT understand is the appeal of the “nebbish loser” character as a lead. Yorick is a rich kid who is a huge slacker loser who, instead of sitting around playing video games and smoking dope, as one would expect, is sitting around practicing escape tricks and who has a pet monkey he can’t train. Oooookkkkaaayyy. If it works for you…

Secondly, immediately after all the men die, every woman we encounter appears to go completely mad. Any woman with any kind of governmental power is seen to be outrageously insane and make the stupidest and most illogical decisions possible. And lots of pockets of insane cults pop up…instantly. Like within a week.

Third. Every single character who is, or can perceived to be, a lesbian at the beginning of the book is not only insane, but also likely to be drugged, psychotic and evil. And while I like three of the four, they are also often boring ranting lunatics, which is simply dreadful.

And lastly, the thing that made me stop reading somewhere in Volume, 6 or maybe it was 7…or 8, was this; after *two years* we’re told that there are still no medicines and pharmaceuticals being made and distributed.

Now, I’m sorry. Two YEARS? I can personally vouch for the fact that about 1/3 of the folks who work in major global pharma firms are women. 6 months, tops. I can absolutely see production being stopped as all the women regrouped initially. But to think that, after TWO YEARS, womenkind – that is, 51% of the current population of the planet – hadn’t managed a single decent power grid, or distribution of food and medicine…that’s just plain insulting.

All that having been said, there is one major character who is a lesbian, and is not an insane raving lunatic-type psychotic…mostly. Dr. Allison Mann is a competent, intelligent and attractive woman who happens to be a lesbian. Her “coming out” was handled well; she is well past lesbian drama and throughout the whole story manages to stay interesting, intelligent, witty and only goes a teeny bit insane. (It is totally not her fault that she’s given an incredibly stupid backstory.)

Allison does manage to have sex and everything in the course of the story – without her or her lover dying. There’s got to be an award for that or something. The first time, it’s a “well that was a bad choice, but oh well, let’s move on, it was stupid but there you have it,” kind of thing, and her reaction when her erstwhile lover, 355, overreacts is the most realistic scene in the book. Later Allison nabs herself a hunky doodle of an Australian (supposedly) ex-intelligence officer, Rose. I didn’t trust her as far as I could kick her, but then I stopped caring and stopped reading.

So, as I said, overall, good series….

…but, fuck you Brian K. Vaughn and same to whomever wrote the Wikipedia entry with this line: “Y: The Last Man is Vaughan’s attempt to subvert the classic male fantasy of being the last man on earth.” No. There’s no suberversion there. It’s the same thing all over again. Loser guy is last man on earth. Wow. How original. Never been done before. We’ve come a long way, baby.

Ratings:

Art – 7
Story – 5
Characters – 7 tapering to 5 as the story goes on and they get weaker to support stupider and more outrageous plot complications.
Yuri – As a whole 3. Allison – 9
Service – 4

Overall – 7 tapering to 5 as the series goes on and….

Oh, and while we’re on the subject of American Comics, a hearty double fuck you to DC Comics for calling their new line designed to “get girls reading comics”, Minx. No…no condescension there. Uh-huh. Hardly at all.

So, after thinking about it, I sent this email to DC:

Dear DC,

I have the Beowulf comic you published in the 80’s where the “scop” uses lines like “Happy Birthday Caroline” backwards as magic spells and Beowulf looks like the Michelin Man. I will not hesitate to blackmail you with it if necessary. So listen up.

Girls already read comics. We always have. We *would* just really like to have female characters who are unabashedly whatever they are without justification or condescension. Calling a line “Minx” (which is the kind of thing letchs call women in trashy novels (“You little minx, you”) is not a good way to draw in women.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely,

Erica

Holiday Shopping

December 13th, 2006

Despite my natural curmudgeonly state of denial, there’s no doubt that the holiday season is upon us.
It is not really my favorite time of year. I find the constant bombardment of songs extolling the birth of a God that is not mine irritating, and the forced merriment infuriating. But all that has already been written up about a zillion times by people angrier and funnier than I’ll ever be, so that’s not what I’m writing about today. So don’t worry – this isn’t another one of those “angry pagan lesbian rants against the sacred national institutions of Christmas, Family Values, Truth, Justice and the (fictitious) American Way.”

Instead, I thought I’d spend a moment looking into the *real* meaning of this season – unadulterated greed and conspicuous consumption. I’m totally for these things, myself. :-) In the spirit of such things, let’s talk about SHOPPING!

Firstly. Let me extol the virtues and variety that await the Yuri fan on the Yuricon Shop. When you are creating your wishlists for friends and family, please consider using adding some Yuri anime, manga, apparel and/or gifts from ALC, Amazon, Amazon JP and Cafepress to that list. (If you’re making an Amazon wishlist, if you use links from the Shop, or generated through clicking through the shop, it would be extra lovely of you.)

Of course ALC has the usual 100% yuri manga – you know you want it. ALC will be running a post-holiday, “Get something you REALLY want” sale, so keep your eyes peeled for that in mid-January, after I return from Comiket. :-) If your relatives are paying, make ’em buy books now. LOL

But, what I really wanted to tell you about was the great new shirt designs on the “Gifts and Apparel” section of the Shop. The picture at the top is one of our three new designs – a long-sleeved black “I Love Yuri” shirt. We have this in a women’s fitted style and white, as well – and of course in short sleeve, hoodies and a variety of great shirt colors and pictures. These make terrific gifts for the yuri fan in your life – and even better gifts to get for the winter holiday of your choice. :-)

But enough about buying from me – let’s talk about buying *for* me. LOL

For the last six years I have spent an entire village’s worth of food money on anime, manga, books, drama cds, etc. I’ve been reviewing and promoting and traveling and in all that time, I’ve rarely accepted gifts – with some few exceptions.

(In fact, I’ve always kind of thought it icky to accept gifts from fans when they were offered. When people asked, I always said that the nicest thing they could do for me was buy something from the Shop.)

Last night, an intelligent and cogent person who I like to think of as a fan (and a friend) pointed out that some people might not feel comfortable buying things for themselves to make me happy. It does not compute. After another friend (Sean Gaffney, who owes me a review on Ichigo Mashimaro, Volume 1) shared his wishlist with me, I was persuaded to make a wishlist of my very own. You can see the link on the bottom of the righthand sidebar, subtlely entitled “In Case You Want To Buy Me Something Nice For My Efforts…” :-)

This is not a random wishlist, full of “Crap I Want.” It is a specifically yurilicious wishlist of things I will, should you decide to reward me for entertaining you, review, to further entertain you. (In other words, it is a wishlist of “Yuri Crap I Want.”) So its a win-win. At least for the moment, this wishlist will remain relevant to our shared interests. This way you don’t feel like you’re just getting who knows what – a little value-added “feel good” factor. ;-)

Lastly, while I am shamelessly begging for things that make me happy, if you really, really don’t know what to get; you got all the anime and manga and don’t wear t-shirts, use mugs, or need a clock, let me once again remind you that a copy of Shoujoai ni Bouken: The Adventures of Yuriko, Volume 1 makes a fun and unusual gift for the budding babydyke or Yuri fan in the family – or for someone who is looking for something “different.” Buying my book is also a win-win. If you buy through the Shop, tell me you’re a reader of Okazu, and I’ll make sure the book is autographed – I’ll even write any message you request, provided it doesn’t make me feel dirty. :-)

So there you go. Buy from me, or buy for me. Either way, you get something you like (book, gift, shirt, review, etc) and I get something I like (income, prezzies.) We can all be happy with a holiday like that! LOL

It’s still a bit early, but as Chanukah begins Friday, let me take this opportunity to wish all my fans, friends, readers and itinerant visitors a happy and healthy holiday season!
