Sailor Moon Anime, Season 2 Part 1 Disk 3 (English)

December 9th, 2015

SMR21It’s the moment you’ve all been waiting for! For the first time ever in the US on legal media, Sailor Moon Season 2 Part 1 Disk 3 brings us the two most amazing episodes of Sailor Moon R, in which Chibi-Usa is saved by dinosaurs and in which Chibi-USA wets the bed.

Oh, and the plot officially starts in the last episode of the disk, too.

I wish I was kidding, but I’m not.

What is there to say about this disk? We spend a lot of time feeling bad for Chibi-Usa, but she’s really hard to feel bad for. It’s obvious she’s terrified, lonely and miserable, but she compensates for it by being a jerk – which is totally human, but no less annoying when she does it than when anyone else does. Like Mamoru, who is also being a jerk for the same reasons. It is at least a little more understandable when a 5 year old is a jerk because she’s scared than when the jerk is an adult. It’s still not all that fun.

Technically, any previous issues with the BD/DVD appear to have been resolved, and although the translation sometimes slips into odd slang – “you must find her, stat” (who knew Luna was on a doctor drama!)  – it’s all pretty smooth sailing technically.

The original animation has sunk low again, compensating for poor art with hypersaturated colors. And poor Mamoru continues to have appalling taste in workout gear.

But…as I sat working to the sounds of Ai no Senshi playing too loudly from the TV in the climactic fight of the series while eating Sicilian lemon pocky (it’s pronounced poe-kee, not pah-kee, btw,) I enjoyed a moment of pure, heavenly otaku nerdliness…and all was right in the world. ^_^

Ratings:

Art – 6
Story – 4, until the last episode
Characters – 6, because it is mostly Chibi-Usa
Yuri – 0
Service – 1 on principle

Overall – 6, until the last episode, then 8

Thanks again to Viz Media for a review copy and a chance to remember how annoying Chibi-Usa is…even though I know I’m going to cry at the and of this season. (T_T)

Western Comic: Anne Bonnie

December 7th, 2015

AB-1-titlePrewCopy_small-198x300Here’s a little piece of wisdom about fandom – geekery is not a contest. We can love ninjas and pirates! ^_^

And so I do. I can love evil psycho lesbians and magical adventures on the high seas, starring a plucky young woman without a lick of common sense, but some extraordinary luck, who manages to activate the magic-powered ship of the famous pirate Anne Bonnie. In Tim Yates’ Anne Bonnie, we meet Ariana who has been kept at home and protected from pirates and piracy her whole life and she’s ready for some adventure.

With the help of her unkillable parrot sidekick, Finn, an escaped slave with a secret and Anne Bonnie’s magical ship itself, Ariana takes on Elves, other pirates, evil mermen, the corrupt navy and the legend of Anne Bonnie herself. And where it leads her is both remarkable and a rollicking good yarn.

I know you’re going to ask, so let’s cut to the chase – yes Mary Read makes an appearance and she’s everything I ever hoped her to be. Big, brawny, muscular with no fucks to give. ^_^

I picked this up at New York Comic Con in October and was reading it very slowly so as to have more time to enjoy the story. Luckily for you, there is a preview online of this enjoyable Volume 1 and it’s available on Blue Juice Comics in print and Comixology digitally… and I gotta say, I’m definitely looking forward to Volume 2!

Ratings:

Art – 8
Story – 9
Characters – 9
Service – Not really, unless you count Mary’s biceps. ^_^

Overall – 9

Pirates and mermaids and magic and kicking ass on the high seas. Yes.

Event Report: Derpycon

December 6th, 2015

DPConDerpycon is a general pop culture entertainment event that was so hyperlocal to me that I walked over from my house. ^_^ And I have to tell you, I’m really glad I did! Derpycon was delightful and if I can, I will definitely be returning next year.

It’s been a long time since I went to so many really small events as I have this year. It’s a little like waiting for Great Pumpkin, everyone is so sincere, but you just never know how it will turn out.

My visit started with a delightful cosplay mashup: Attack on Titan Christmas Corps, with gift-wrapped vertical maneuvering equipment.

There were a number of other area cons, groups and communities with tables along the hallways and in various rooms. Of these, I spoke with T-Mode, a Washington DC metro area con and community that does get-togethers and events and Fan Focus Con which had interesting spin on guests – every guest has to add some unique value to the event. For instance, one guest would be leading morning yoga sessions, another hosting the Karaoke contest.

The Panels were very focused on fannish things, ranging from anime-world building to cosplayers against harassment and and other “how to be a human among humans” type panels, but Derpycon wins for the best panel title ever: The Equestrian Candidate: MLP Conspiracy Theories.  ^_^

One of the most fascinating groups tabling at Derpycon was Operation Hammond, a volunteer First Aid organization that specializes in attending geeky events. Along with first responders and EMTs, Operation Hammond also provides support for people who have social anxiety, panic attacks and other “too many people” problems.

The Artist alley was mostly folks selling fan art of popular series, but I found two wonderful things! First the delightful ladies of Un-Re Designs, with their unique color palette and delightfully creepy-cute  accessories.

And I came across the folks from Gay Breakfast, Nillia and Judith, who along with fun Yuri/lesbian fanart, had an *amazing* and wonderful original story of two goddesses who had been separated, reunited by a young boy. The story, told here on Azami Comic, in whole, and in parts with narration, is presented as a series of postcards. It’s a lovely tale, beautifully rendered and presented in a unique way.  For this alone, Derpycon was worth my time!  I do hope you’ll take a look at the story, it is truly lovely.

The Dealer’s Room was much bigger than I anticipated, with hallways leading to it filled with other area events, including Otakon (which is moving to Washinton, DC in 2016), promoting Otakon Vegas, and Katsucon.

Spent some time visiting with Su from Sci-Fi Continuum and and Erin S of AnimeNEXT (which is moving to Atlantic City in 2016,) who was there with the Manga Library.

Got to spend some time there chatting with old friends, which was such a pleasant surprise.

They had a pretty extensive gaming room, including folks promoting their own original games.

I spoke with the designer of Cupcakes and Critters, in which you protect these cute little cupcakes from being eaten.

20151205_144807

Deuce  was very enthusiastic about this version of a castle-defense game, and the table area smelled like sugar. ^_^

20151205_144743

There was also a Tabletop gaming room, and video, music, LARPing and other features of cons these days.

As I made my way out, I nabbed a few cosplay pictures of folks that might interest us. ^_^ A *lot* of the cosplay was anime/manga specific.

And then my time at Derpycon had come to an end, but I will definitely be back!

Sailor Stars to debut in North America on December 14

December 4th, 2015

Sailor-Moon-Viz-MediaThere will be no YNN report this weekend, as I will be busy with, among other things, visiting Derpycon, a little local general con and seeing what they’ve got going on. Instead, I’m rounding out this week with some major news from Viz Media:

Something to look forward to!

English Manga: Before You Go 2 Halfway There

December 2nd, 2015

BYGHT-Cover_smallNext time you sigh and think, “Gosh, I wish someone was creating Yuri in English” please stop and remind yourself of these two extremely important words: Sparkler Monthly.

I’ve sung the praises of Sparkler Monthly before. It is a homegrown josei manga magazine, which is to say that it is primarily by and for adult women, with light novels, audio dramas and manga/comics. The editors are folks with tons of experience in the manga industry and are talented creators in their own right. And, because they are trying to create a unique product focused on a female audience, without keeping male readers out, Sparkler Monthly runs action and adventure and romance and has straight, Yuri and BL storylines.

Previously I’ve mentioned Denise Schroeder’s Before You GoKaiJU’s Mahou Josei Chimaka and Alexis Cooke’s For Peace. When Denise first created BYG, she had no specific idea of continuing it, but due to your support of her work, she got so many requests for a sequel that she drew one! I received that sequel as a ebook for subscribing to the magazine and today I want to talk about it.

Before You Go was a cute, somewhat typical “Story A”; two women meet on a train and eventually get together. Unsurprisingly, I wanted to see what happened afterwards. Before You Go 2: Halfway There picks up a few months after Sadie and Robin have been dating. Everything seems okay, but Robin can tell that something is up with Sadie, so she tries to find out what it is. The drama is small and the resolution sweet.

For us here at Okazu nothing in this comic is groundbreaking content-wise, but it is absolutely wonderful that Sparkler Monthly has shown a continuing interest in and commitment to great female characters as well as BL that reaches beyond basic tropes and of course, Yuri. In return I encourage you to support Sparkler back. Subscriptions to Sparkler start as low as $5/monthly, chapters are available online for free to get a taste of any given story  – and the store is having a huge holiday sale right now. If you like fantasy (and Utena) I recommend Windrose (in paperback or ebook) as well as BYG, For Peace and Chimaka. A subscription to Sparkler Monthly and/or some of their original Yuri  would make a swell gift to a friend, a young woman you know who loves manga or yourself.

And you can be absolutely sure that the folks at Sparkler know when it’s Yuri that folks are looking for. Your support makes a much bigger impact here than it does for folks like Seven Seas who publish what they like first before they think about what you like.

Ratings:

Art – 7 and improving
Story – 7
Characters – 7 Sound like, (gasp!) people!
Yuri – 6
Service – 0

Overall a solid 7, smiles all around.

Enjoy the happy endings of Before You Go, then grab a few shiny things from Sparkler Monthly for the holidays. ^_^
