According to the Studio IG Panel at Anime Expo, going on right now, RightStuf also has the license to the Adolescence of Utena Movie.
That doesn’t mean they are releasing it, mind you – just that they have it.

I’m not sure I understand how that works then? If they have the license, what else would they do with it if not release it?
@Anonymous – They might not. There’s a lot of things that go into a release and plenty of companies have had delayed or non-releases of series.
All I’m saying is, don’t jump to conclusions!
@Anon, the license may have come along for the ride when Nozomi/Rightstuf got the license for the Utena series (esp. as in the AnimeNewsNetwork forums, someone was saying that the Utena Movie was included as an extra with the Utena series box set).
Do you suppose if they digitally remaster it…it’ll make more sense the second time around? :)
Transformation Car Wash?
Ran
@Ran- It made perfect sense the first time. Fans really need to read more.
The carwash scene is a very straightforward allegory.
I’m confident they will if its at all feasible for them. They’ve been good about releasing extra “pieces” of franchises, such as the Aria OVA, which quite easily could’ve been left out. So I’ll continue to have faith.
@Cryssoberyl I’m with you. I have reason to believe that this will happen. I’d personally like to see a Blu-Ray release for the movie. The Castle Car deserves that.
@Erica. Not to a young anime newbie at the tender age of sixteen watching a grainy, questionably translated fansub VCD in the historic years before anime became wildly popular in the US. It still stands in mind as one of the finest mind-screws of my teenage years. Any movie that reduces me to tears of laughter at the shear awesome wtf factor from climax to end credits is great in my book.
The castle car indeed deserves crystal clear hi-def clarity in all its monster truck glory.
Ran
@Ran – I also saw that nth generation copy and it still made perfect sense to me. Cast the blame not on the movie, but on your youth and lack of literary and artistic references. :-)
I can smell an allegory at 15 paces – this one was:
“Utena is the vehicle by which Anthy escapes Ohtori.”
And I just rewatched the movie last night – there were *so* many car references, it’s a wonder we were surprised at the transformation at all!
Aha, but there’s another side to it as well:
“Anthy is the driver of the Utena car because it was her emotional nurturing that allowed Utena to escape from the pain of her past.”
One of the main reasons I love the movie so much is that their relationship is so reciprocal. They both help and save each other, and are united as equals in the end.
