YNN Correspondent Megan wants you to know about a LGBT+ novel titled Hige to Napkin (ヒゲとナプキ) “written by Ototake Hirotada…. The novel was written in collaboration with and modeled on the life of Ototake’s old friend, trans rights campaigner Sugiyama Fumino, and is about a 28 year old trans man.” For more details about this novel, read Megan’s whole comment.

Riyoko Ikeda Production responds to fashion brand Moschino’s apparent copies of Rose of Versailles art in this fantastic ANN article by Kim Morrisey and Lynzee Loveridge on what looks to many of us to be blatant copying.

This news is far afield, but I absolutely LOVED this typeface. Kachi-Buwa, by Emi Takahashi. Jyni Ong takes a look at it on It’s Nice That, in Kachi-Buwa is a variable Katakana typeface expressing Japanese onomatopoeic expressions. Check out the article then take a look at the font.

From YNN Correspondent Michael V, the New York Times has a Book Review of Lisa Selin Davis’ Tomboy: The Surprising History and Future of Girls Who Dare to Be Different.

“From YNN Correspondent Michael V, the New York Times has a Book Review of Lisa Selin Davis’ Tomboy: The Surprising History and Future of Girls Who Dare to Be Different.”

Tomboys were once considered “weird” girls with anti-social, “unfemaly” behavior, but now many men will even call them their ideal type. It is impressive how throughout history the same social trends can be both completely condemned and idealized in society.

Fun fact. In the 90s Ikeda-sensei designed some costumes for the famous visual kei group Lareine and even drew the cover and booklet for one of their singles, but over the years, many Western fans thought that Kamijo and the others were just so obsessed with her manga that they were copying the costumes from there.

Volume 1 of Anata wa Bun-chan no Koi by Miyazaki Natsujikei came out. It’s a manga about unrequited love driving people crazy, with the title character being a young woman who can’t get over her feelings for her female childhood friend. It doesn’t feel like it’s written as a yuri manga though and seems to be getting almost no attention from yuri fans. Kodansha’s marketing around it emphasizes the mangaka and her talent – it runs in Morning Two and this month’s issue had an interview with a member of rock band King Gnu talking about how much he liked her work.

Some news close from my heart – Common Bonds, a Sci-fi aromantic anthology which I backed the Kickstarted for, recently sent out the print books to backers, my copy arrived yesterday. Copies for non-backers will be available later, here’s the twitter account for updates: https://twitter.com/commonbondsant1

Vlad Love advance screening event on Dec 28th – event will also feature a talk with Oshii and other staff: https://prtimes.jp/main/html/rd/p/000000063.000036834.html

There’s also a casting interview up on the official Youtube plus cast announced for the dads of the main characters – I suppose Oshii wasn’t exaggerating with how this anime only has bishoujo or Ossan characters and nothing in between :P https://twitter.com/VLADLOVE_ANIME/status/1330073532097835010

    • Thank you for the heads up. I’m less convinced than ever that Vlad Love is worth mentioning here. ^_^ There really doesn’t seem to be any reason to follow it for YNN at this point.

  4. Thank you for the pointer. Morning Two has always been about the “manga is cool” crowd, in my humble opinion. I first read GUNJO there, and there’s been a fascinating variety of series running in those pages.

  5. I picked up Forest Guardian on a whim. It was cheap and there’s not a lot of yuri VN content available for the Switch.

It’s really more of a kinetic comic than a VN, or at least I haven’t hit any branching paths yet. The story is predictable and shallow, but sweet – kitsune shrine maiden is distrusted and misunderstood by neighboring humans, hasn’t had any visitors in a long time, is kinda lonely. The character designs and backgrounds are anime standard and well-executed but kind of characterless. The shrine maiden is cute and kind and it’s probably worth it if you can get it for under $10. It only takes a few hours to finish.
