Yuri Light Novel
I’m In Love With the Villainess, Volume 5 is coming out in print format in English this week. If you haven’t read it, please do….it’s an amazing and unpredictable ending to an amazing and unpredictable series. Inori-sensei says that the manga volumes are getting reprints, and that you can help her by voting for the light novel in the Kadokawa’s Next Light Novel Awards. By now, you’ve probably heard that Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury is Utena in Space. Well, it is, and you should at least watch Episode 1. ^_^ ANN’s Kim Morrissey has words from Gundam manga artist Koichi Tokita, in Gundam Manga Illustrator Recalls An Earlier Time When Sexism Prevented A Female Protagonist. It is all well and good that Gundam has a Yuri couple as the main pair, but…can I be honest? How much cooler might it have been if they didn’t just borrow from Utena and created an actual new couple? Like with their own creativity and imagination. Who am I kidding… these are the folks who have used Char Aznable’s style in a dozen different iterations. ^_^;

While the plot borrows heavily from Utena, I don’t think the main characters themselves resemble Utena and Anthy all that much?
No, the character designs are different, but the plot and some of the scenes are pretty identical. I’m wishing they wrote a new story, with new characters.
The characters themselves are new. Miorine especially is practically the anti-Anthy, acting on her own will to escape from the start.
I think there’s value in its borrowing, which is often the case and part of the skill in creative work, rather than ideas being better off avoided once they’ve been used.
It remains to be seen what they do with the basic story and I’m hopeful that they will get creative. I genuinely enjoyed the climactic duel, which is good, as watching robots fighting in space is pretty much the point of Gundam. ^_^
Agreed on Franchouchou in concert. I have a musing video of them performing on a bridge (an extra that came with a CD?) that is wonderful.
Also, they do a nice variety of music.
Next trip to Japan I may try to fit in a few days in Saga, so the promotional aspect of the series is working, at least a little.

Yes, it was a Blu-ray extra that came with the Zombie Land Saga Franchouchou THE BEST CD.
I had been thinking the Utena comparisons to the new Gundam series were a bit strained until the character named Chuchu appeared.
The framing of the title sequence was on the nose as well.
