Yuri News, Yuricon News

February 2nd, 2008

Once again, we get some fun news from Poland, this time from Sylwia who says that in the newest issue of Polish feminist magazine Zadra, readers have chance to read about lesbian in comic books from all over the world. Sylwia wrote about the American, European and African markets, including Yuri. :-)

Yuricon and ALC Publishing is pleased to announce our first con of 2008 – Anime Boston. We’ll be at Table 419 in the Dealer’s Room and will be running a Yuri Panel at 3PM on Saturday, March 22nd! This will be our first time at ABoston in 6 years, and we’re looking forward to being part of it once again. See you there!

And in preparation for the next round of translation into Japanese, the Site Map and Links pages on Yuricon have been updated. We’ve got some shiny new links up to both English and Japanese sites. :-)

Yuri News Around the Globe

January 24th, 2008

Here’s a few tidbits of Yuri news that have been floating around my inbox for a few days:

From Poland – Yuricon ML member Grisznak has had a History of Yuri published at the biggest Polish manga and anime portal, anime.com.pl Grisznak will also be involved in several Yuri and Yuri-related panels at Polish cons in 2008 – check out the Yuri Events Page on Yuricon for details. (And if you are running or know of a Yuri-related panel or event anywhere in the world, please email me so I can add it to the Events Page!) The Polish Yuri community is amazing – go Polish Yuri fans!

From Japan – Rica Takashima says that she intends on drawing more Rica and Miho for us! \o/ I’m not above using evil means to pressure her, so we can do a sequel to Rica ‘tte Kanji!?. So, in the comments field, please put your wishes for more Rica and Miho, and I’ll collect them and forward them to her. lol

From US – Yuricon has been updated with new items on the Shop, new events and starting this weekend, we have a new Japanese-language home page. Most of the interior pages are in English as of yet but, little by little, we’ll be converting as many as possible to Japanese. This is a very exciting first step forward on something we’ve wanted to do for some time. Many thanks to Katey, our website translator!

(I’m going to try my best to post Events in their native language going forward as well, so if you are sending in an event or panel, please include the information in your native tongue as well. This is all part of our plan for total world domination. LOL)

If you have news you want to share about events or Yuri anywhere in the world, email me – Yuri fans want to know. :-)

Yuri Hime News and ALC Publishing News

January 12th, 2008

Two quick things of note:

I will be doing a book signing of 100% Yuri from ALC Publishing on Wednesday January 16th at 6:30 PM at Jim Hanley’s Universe in Manhattan, as part of a Prism Comics night. I’ll be joined by authors JD Glass and Abby Denson.

JHU is located at 4 West 33rd St. on 5th Avenue, just across from the Empire State Building.

If you are in the NYC area or can get there for the event, I’d love to see you there!

Ichijinsha has announced that Comic Yuri Hime is being made an independent entity from Ichijinsha’s popular comic magazine Zero Sum. Akiba blog reports that to celebrate, the 11th volume, on sale on Jan. 18th, will include the Petit Yuri Hime extra, which is a collaboration of artists from Yuri Hime, Yuri Hime S and Yuri Hime: Wildrose. (If you read the announcement on Comipress, they misreported YH as an add-on to Zero Sum – it wasn’t. It was financially dependent upon it and now it’s paying for itself. Also, since this isn’t their area, they didn’t realize that the “Petit” extra was the collaborative effort. FYI, in case you were going to write in ask why the discrepancies.)

This is excellent news, but I can’t help still being worried about the salaciousness of the magazine. More and more of the stories are moe/loli and the “Petit” extra has traditionally been pretty high on the service scale, based on the authors. (The first two volumes were offered as Comiket extras. I do not have either, but have seen Vol. 2.) I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and offer my congratulations to Ichijinsha for making “Yuri” a profitable category!

Stroking My Ego, Among Other Things

January 8th, 2008

Quick semi-news post. If, like, me you enjoy the occasional bout of literary criticsm on comics and manga, I suggest you visit Newsarama’s blog for a list of their commentator’s top critical posts on manga and comics. I hope you’ll read all the way down the list, to where Mangablog‘s Brigid Alverson gives Okazu a shout-out. ;-) That was awfully nice of her. I can return the favor. She’s a great writer – go read her blog.

Also, Active Anime has resurrected the old AnimeFringe Top 25 anime/manga site poll. Way back when it was just a baby site, Yuricon was in the Top 25. I’d love to make it again – of course, it would be even *better* if I made it twice with Okazu on the list, too. Feel free to stuff the ballot box vote for your Top Anime Site. Don’t forget to make two of your three choices Yuricon and Okazu. LOL

Okazu News: We’re the Top!

December 12th, 2007

I’ve been getting a lot of email these days on how impossibly cool Okazu is. I can’t say this displeases me. LOL

This week we got two pieces of particularly ego-gratifying email.

Okazu is being included in an upcoming book, Top 500 Blogs by online dating blogger Vicky Zhou. The book is slated for release in Q4 2008; Okazu will be included in the “Animation & Media” section.

And this morning I learned that Okazu is coming in in the Top 3 blogs at Inside Manga. According to the website, Okazu is one of the hottest blogs on manga. Okay, I accept graciously. :-)

So thanks to Vicki, Inside Manga, Cole Porter and to all of you for making Okazu the top! I look forward to writing more reviews and hearing more from all of you. :-)
